Project description:Constructing photocatalytically active and stable covalent organic frameworks containing both oxidative and reductive reaction centers remain a challenge. In this study, benzotrithiophene-based covalent organic frameworks with spatially separated redox centers are rationally designed for the photocatalytic production of hydrogen peroxide from water and oxygen without sacrificial agents. The triazine-containing framework demonstrates high selectivity for H2O2 photogeneration, with a yield rate of 2111 μM h-1 (21.11 μmol h-1 and 1407 μmol g-1 h-1) and a solar-to-chemical conversion efficiency of 0.296%. Codirectional charge transfer and large energetic differences between linkages and linkers are verified in the double donor-acceptor structures of periodic frameworks. The active sites are mainly concentrated on the electron-acceptor fragments near the imine bond, which regulate the electron distribution of adjacent carbon atoms to optimally reduce the Gibbs free energy of O2* and OOH* intermediates during the formation of H2O2.

Project description:The control of charge transfer between radical anions and cations is a promising way for decoding the emission mechanism in electrochemiluminescence (ECL) systems. Herein, a type of donor-acceptor (D-A) covalent organic framework (COF) with triphenylamine and triazine units is designed as a highly efficient ECL emitter with tunable intrareticular charge transfer (IRCT). The D-A COF demonstrates 123 folds enhancement in ECL intensity compared with its benzene-based COF with small D-A contrast. Further, the COF's crystallinity- and protonation-modulated ECL behaviors confirm ECL dependence on intrareticular charge transfer between donor and acceptor units, which is rationalized by density functional theory. Significantly, dual-peaked ECL patterns of COFs are achieved through an IRCT mediated competitive oxidation mechanism: the coreactant-mediated oxidation at lower potential and the direct oxidation at higher potential. This work provides a new fundamental and approach to improve the ECL efficiency for designing next-generation ECL devices.

Project description:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are promising materials for applications in photocatalysis, due to their conjugated, porous and chemically stable architectures. Alternating electron donor-acceptor-type structures are known to enhance charge carrier transport mobility and stability in polymers and are therefore also interesting building units for COFs used as photocatalysts but also as photoinitiator. In this work, two donor-acceptor COFs using electron deficient 4,4',4''-(1,3,5-triazine-2,4,6-triyl)trianiline and electron rich thiophene-based thieno[3,2-b]thiophene-2,5-dicarbaldehyde or [2,2'-bithiophene]-5,5'-dicarbaldehyde linkers are presented. The resulting crystalline and porous COFs have been applied as photoinitiator for visible light induced free radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) to poly-methyl methacrylate (PMMA). These results pave the way to the development of robust and heterogeneous systems for photochemistry that offers the transfer of radicals induced by visible light.

Project description:The strong excitonic effects widely exist in polymer-semiconductors and the large exciton binding energy (Eb) seriously limits their photocatalysis. Herein, density functional theory (DFT) calculations are conducted to assess band alignment and charge transfer feature of potential donor-acceptor (D-A) covalent organic frameworks (COFs), using 1,3,5-tris(4-aminophenyl)triazine (TAPT) or 1,3,5-tris(4-aminophenyl)benzene (TAPB) as acceptors and tereph-thaldehydes functionalized diverse groups as donors. Given the discernable D-A interaction strengths in the D-A pairs, their Eb can be systematically regulated with minimum Eb in TAPT-OMe. Guided by these results, the corresponding D-A COFs are synthesized, where TAPT-OMe-COF possesses the best activity in photocatalytic H2 production and the activity trend of other COFs is associated with that of calculated Eb for the D-A pairs. In addition, further alkyne cycloaddition for the imine linkage in the COFs greatly improves the stability and the resulting TAPT-OMe-alkyne-COF with a substantially smaller Eb exhibits ~20 times higher activity than the parent COF.

Project description:When new covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are designed, the main efforts are typically focused on selecting specific building blocks with certain geometries and properties to control the structure and function of the final COFs. The nature of the linkage (imine, boroxine, vinyl, etc.) between these building blocks naturally also defines their properties. However, besides the linkage type, the orientation, i.e., the constitutional isomerism of these linkages, has rarely been considered so far as an essential aspect. In this work, three pairs of constitutionally isomeric imine-linked donor-acceptor (D-A) COFs are synthesized, which are different in the orientation of the imine bonds (D-C=N-A (DCNA) and D-N=C-A (DNCA)). The constitutional isomers show substantial differences in their photophysical properties and consequently in their photocatalytic performance. Indeed, all DCNA COFs show enhanced photocatalytic H2 evolution performance than the corresponding DNCA COFs. Besides the imine COFs shown here, it can be concluded that the proposed concept of constitutional isomerism of linkages in COFs is quite universal and should be considered when designing and tuning the properties of COFs.

Project description:The uranium level in seawater is ≈1000 times as high as terrestrial ores and can provide potential near-infinite fuel for the nuclear energy industry. However, it is still a significant challenge to develop high-efficiency and low-cost adsorbents for massively extracting uranium from seawater. Herein, a simple and fast method through low-energy consumption sunlight polymerization to direct fabrication of a poly(amidoxime) (PAO) hydrogel membrane, which exhibits high uranium adsorption capacity, is reported. This PAO hydrogel owns semi-interpenetrating structure and a hydrophilic poly(acrylamide) 3D network of hydrogel which can disperse and fix PAOs well. As a result, the amidoxime groups of PAOs exhibit an outstanding uranium adsorption efficiency (718 ± 16.6 and 1279 ± 14.5 mg g-1 of m uranium/m PAO in 8 and 32 ppm uranium-spiked seawater, respectively) among reported hydrogel-based adsorbents. Most importantly, U-uptake capacity of this hydrogel can achieve 4.87 ± 0.38 mg g-1 of m uranium/m dry gel just after four weeks within natural seawater. Furthermore, this hydrogel can be massively produced through low-energy consumption and environmentally-friendly sunlight polymerization. This work will provide a high-efficiency and low-cost adsorbent for massive uranium extraction from seawater.

Project description:Aromatic triazoles have been frequently used as π-conjugated linkers in intramolecular electron transfer processes. To gain a deeper understanding of the electron-mediating function of triazoles, we have synthesized a family of new triazole-based electron donor-acceptor conjugates. We have connected zinc(II)porphyrins and fullerenes through a central triazole moiety--(ZnP-Tri-C(60))--each with a single change in their connection through the linker. An extensive photophysical and computational investigation reveals that the electron transfer dynamics--charge separation and charge recombination--in the different ZnP-Tri-C(60) conjugates reflect a significant influence of the connectivity at the triazole linker. Except for the m4m-ZnP-Tri-C(60)17, the conjugates exhibit through-bond photoinduced electron transfer with varying rate constants. Since the through-bond distance is nearly the same for all the synthesized ZnP-Tri-C(60) conjugates, the variation in charge separation and charge recombination dynamics is mainly associated with the electronic properties of the conjugates, including orbital energies, electron affinity, and the energies of the excited states. The changes of the electronic couplings are, in turn, a consequence of the different connectivity patterns at the triazole moieties.

Project description:Marine biofouling is one of the most significant challenges hindering practical uranium extraction from seawater. Single atoms have been widely used in catalytic applications because of their remarkable redox property, implying that the single atom is highly capable of catalyzing the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and acts as an anti-biofouling substance for controlling biofouling. In this study, the Co single atom loaded polyacrylamidoxime (PAO) material, PAO-Co, is fabricated based on the binding ability of the amidoxime group to uranyl and cobalt ions. Nitrogen and oxygen atoms from the amidoxime group stabilize the Co single atom. The fabricated PAO-Co exhibits a broad range of antimicrobial activity against diverse marine microorganisms by producing ROS, with an inhibition rate up to 93.4%. The present study is the first to apply the single atom for controlling biofouling. The adsorbent achieves an ultrahigh uranium adsorption capacity of 9.7 mg g-1 in biofouling-containing natural seawater, which decreased only by 11% compared with that in biofouling-removed natural seawater. These findings indicate that applying single atoms would be a promising strategy for designing biofouling-resistant adsorbents for uranium extraction from seawater.

Project description:Amidoxime-functionalized hydrogels are one of most promising adsorbents for high-efficiency uranium (U) extraction from seawater, but bioadhesion on their surface seriously decreases their adsorption efficiency and largely shortens their service life. Herein, a semi-interpenetrating zwitterion-poly(amidoxime) (ZW-PAO) hydrogel was explored through introducing a PAO polymer into a poly [3-(dimethyl 4-vinylbenzyl amino) propyl sulfonate] (PDVBAP) polyzwitterionic (PZW) network via ultraviolet (UV) polymerization. Owing to the anti-polyelectrolyte effect of the PZW network, this ZW-PAO hydrogel can provide excellent super-hydrophilicity in seawater for high-efficiency U-adsorption from seawater. Furthermore, the ZW-PAO hydrogel had outstanding anti-biofouling performance for both highly enhanced U-adsorption and a relatively long working life in natural seawater. As a result, during only 25 days in seawater (without filtering bacteria), the U-uptake amount of this ZW-PAO hydrogel can reach 9.38 mg/g and its average rate can reach 0.375 mg/(g∙day), which is excellent among reported adsorbents. This work has explored a promising hydrogel for high-efficiency U-recovery from natural seawater and will inspire new strategy for U-adsorbing materials.

Project description:Uranium is a key element in the nuclear industry, but its unintended leakage has caused health and environmental concerns. Here we report a sp2 carbon-conjugated fluorescent covalent organic framework (COF) named TFPT-BTAN-AO with excellent chemical, thermal and radiation stability is synthesized by integrating triazine-based building blocks with amidoxime-substituted linkers. TFPT-BTAN-AO shows an exceptional UO22+ adsorption capacity of 427 mg g-1 attributable to the abundant selective uranium-binding groups on the highly accessible pore walls of open 1D channels. In addition, it has an ultra-fast response time (2 s) and an ultra-low detection limit of 6.7 nM UO22+ suitable for on-site and real-time monitoring of UO22+, allowing not only extraction but also monitoring the quality of the extracted water. This study demonstrates great potential of fluorescent COFs for radionuclide detection and extraction. By rational designing target ligands, this strategy can be extended to the detection and extraction of other contaminants.
