Development and initial validation of the psychological capital scale for nurses in Chinese local context.

ABSTRACT:

Background

Psychological capital is affected by different cultures and professional characteristics and its constituent dimensions and evaluation tools are heterogeneous. There is a lack of measurements for assessing nurses' psychological capital considering nursing professional characteristics and Chinese cultural impacts.

Aims

To develop a psychological capital scale that conforms to the Chinese cultural background and the characteristics of nursing profession, and evaluate the preliminary validation of the Nurses Psychological Capital Scale.

Methods

Nurses were conveniently recruited from two tertiary hospitals, Hebei, China. The research process included three steps: item development (Delphi survey and pilot survey), scale development (item analysis and exploratory factor analysis), scale validation (reliability and validity test).

Results

Exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis showed that the 43-item scale comprised three factors (work task-oriented psychological capital, interpersonal relationship-oriented psychological capital and learning development-oriented psychological capital). Exploratory factor analysis showed the factor loadings ranging from 0.460 to 1.029. Three factors explained 68.71% of the variance. Confirmatory factor analysis showed an adequate model fit (x²/df =2.839, RMR = 0.041, RMSEA = 0.078, IFI = 0.872, TLI = 0.863, CFI = 0.871, PNFI = 0.768). The Cronbach's α for the scale was 0.975. The item-level content validity index (I-CVI) was 0.83 ~ 1.00, scale-level average content validity index (S-CVI/Ave) was 0.988.

Conclusion

The Nurse Psychological Capital Scale had good reliability and validity, which is a reliable evaluation measure for assessing psychological capital among nurses.

Project description:BackgroundNurses' competency in pain management is essential for effectively alleviating patients' acute pain, controlling chronic pain, and promoting patient recovery. However, reliable tools for evaluating these competencies across different clinical specialties and healthcare settings are lacking. This study aimed to develop and validate a Pain Management Competency Scale for Nurses (PMCSN) and to assess the pain management competencies of nurses in China through a nationwide survey.MethodsAn item pool and a draft scale were developed through literature reviews, semi-structured interviews, and expert panel discussions. This was followed by refinement of the scale via Delphi expert consultations and a pilot test. To validate the scale, 342 nurses were conveniently sampled from six hospitals in Eastern and Central China. The validation process included item analysis, internal consistency reliability assessment, test-retest reliability (with 40 nurses retaking the questionnaire after a 14-day interval), content validity (evaluated by six experts using a 4-point Likert scale), and structural validity (assessed through exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses). The validated scale was then applied in a survey of 1,500 nurses from 15 hospitals across Eastern, Central, and Western China. Statistical analyses included descriptive statistics, analysis of variance (ANOVA), and t-tests.ResultsThe PMCSN comprised six primary dimensions-Pain Assessment and Monitoring, Pharmacological Pain Management, Non-Pharmacological Pain Management, Management of Analgesic Adverse Effects, Patient/Family Education, and Professional Development-and includes 52 tertiary items. The PMCSN scores ranged from 6 to 120, calculated by summing the standardized scores across the six dimensions, with higher scores indicating greater competency in pain management. The scale's Cronbach's α was 0.974 (dimension-specific values ranging from 0.863 to 0.935) and a test-retest reliability of 0.871. The content validity index (CVI) of the scale was 0.965. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) showed that the six-factor model explained 67.50% of the variance. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) indicated good model fit, with average variance extracted (AVE) values ranging from 0.659 to 0.811 and composite reliability (CR) between 0.909 and 0.973, confirming good convergent validity. The square roots of the AVE values exceeded the inter-factor correlations, indicating good discriminant validity. In the nationwide survey, the average PMCSN score among 1,500 nurses was 101.27 ± 20.97. Nurses with higher education levels scored higher (F = 14.173, p < 0.01), as did those working in Eastern regions (F = 24.632, p < 0.01) and tertiary hospitals (T = -5.476, p < 0.01).ConclusionsThe PMCSN is a valid and reliable tool for assessing nurses' pain management competencies. It provides a standardized approach for evaluation and guides targeted interventions to improve competency. Regional and hospital-level disparities highlight the need for enhanced training in underdeveloped areas and collaboration between hospitals to promote balanced healthcare resources.

Project description:Burnout is recognized as an occupational hazard, and nursing has a high risk of burnout. This study aims to explore the relationship between psychological capital (PsyCap) and burnout among Chinese nurses and the mediating role of coping style in this relationship.A total of 1,496 nurses (effective response rate: 80.11%) from two large general hospitals in Daqing City of China were selected as participants. Data were collected via the Chinese Maslach Burnout Inventory (CMBI), the psychological capital questionnaire (PCQ-24), the Chinese Trait Coping Style Questionnaire (TCSQ) and demographic and caregiver-patient relationship. Hierarchical linear regression analyses were performed to explore the mediating role of positive coping and negative coping, and we used the Bootstrap method to confirm the mediating effect.Self-efficacy, hope, resilience and optimism of nurses were all negatively related with emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and reduced personal accomplishment among Chinese nurses. Positive coping partially mediated the relationship between hope/optimism and emotional exhaustion and between self-efficacy/optimism and reduced personal accomplishment. Negative coping fully mediated the relationship between self-efficacy and emotional exhaustion, and in the regression model self-efficacy was positively correlated with emotional exhaustion. And negative coping also partially mediated the relationship between hope/optimism and emotional exhaustion and between optimism and depersonalization.PsyCap had effects on burnout and coping style was a mediator in this relationship among Chinese nurses. Nurses who had a strong sense of self-efficacy adopted more negative coping style, which in turn would lead to higher levels of emotional exhaustion. These findings shed light on the influence of negative coping on burnout, and positive coping was a positive resource for fighting against nurses' burnout. Hence, in order to avoid negative coping style, improve skill of coping and enhance PsyCap of nurses, active interventions should be developed in the future.

Project description:IntroductionCOVID-19 pandemic causes drastic changes in workplaces that are likely to increase quite quitting among employees. Although quiet quitting is not a new phenomenon, there is no instrument to measure it.ObjectiveTo develop and validate an instrument assessing quiet quitting among employees.MethodsWe identified and generated items through an extensive literature review and interviews with employees. We carried out the content validity by content experts and we calculated the content validity ratio. We checked face validity by conducting cognitive interviews with employees and calculating the item-level face validity index. We conducted exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis to investigate the quiet quitting scale (QQS) factorial structure. We checked the concurrent validity of the QQS using four other scales, i.e., Copenhagen burnout inventory (CBI), single item burnout (SIB) measure, job satisfaction survey (JSS) and a single item to measure turnover intention. We estimated the reliability of the QQS measuring Cronbach's alpha, McDonald's omega, Cohen's kappa and intraclass correlation coefficient.ResultsAfter expert panel review and item analysis, nine items with acceptable corrected item-total correlations, inter-item correlations, floor and ceiling effects, skewness and kurtosis were retained. Exploratory factor analysis extracted three factors, namely detachment, lack of initiative and lack of motivation, with a total of nine items. Confirmatory factor analysis confirmed this factorial structure for QQS. We found statistically significant correlations between QQS and CBI, SIB, JSS and turnover intention confirming that the concurrent validity of the QQS was great. Cronbach's alpha and McDonald's omega of the QQS were 0.803 and 0.806 respectively.ConclusionQQS, a three-factor nine-item scale, has robust psychometric properties. QQS is an easy-to-administer, brief, reliable and valid tool to measure employees' quiet quitting. We recommend the use of the QQS in different societies and cultures to assess the validity of the instrument.
