Stature estimation by semi-automatic measurements of 3D CT images of the femur.

ABSTRACT: Stature estimation is one of the most basic and important methods of personal identification. The long bones of the limbs provide the most accurate stature estimation, with the femur being one of the most useful. In all the previously reported methods of stature estimation using computed tomography (CT) images of the femur, laborious manual measurement was necessary. A semi-automatic bone measuring method can simplify this process, so we firstly reported a stature estimation process using semi-automatic bone measurement software equipped with artificial intelligence. Multiple measurements of femurs of adult Japanese cadavers were performed using automatic three-dimensional reconstructed CT images of femurs. After manually setting four points on the femur, an automatic measurement was acquired. The relationships between stature and five femoral measurements, with acceptable intraobserver and interobserver errors, were analyzed with single regression analysis using the standard error of the estimate (SEE) and the coefficient of determination (R²). The maximum length of the femur (MLF) provided the lowest SEE and the highest R²; the SEE and R² in all cadavers, males and females, respectively, were 3.913 cm (R² = 0.842), 3.664 cm (R² = 0.705), and 3.456 cm (R² = 0.686) for MLF on the right femur, and 3.837 cm (R² = 0.848), 3.667 cm (R² = 0.705), and 3.384 cm (R² = 0.699) for MLF on the left femur. These results were non-inferior to those of previous reports regarding stature estimation using the MLF. Stature estimation with this simple and time-saving method would be useful in forensic medical practice.

Project description:The long-term goal of our study is to understand the internal organization of the octocoral stem canals, as well as their physiological and functional role in the growth of the colonies, and finally to assess the influence of climatic changes on this species. Here we focus on imaging tools, namely acquisition and processing of three-dimensional high-resolution images, with emphasis on automated extraction of canal pathways. Our aim was to evaluate the feasibility of the whole process, to point out and solve - if possible - technical problems related to the specimen conditioning, to determine the best acquisition parameters and to develop necessary image-processing algorithms. The pathways extracted are expected to facilitate the structural analysis of the colonies, namely to help observing the distribution, formation and number of canals along the colony. Five volumetric images of Muricea muricata specimens were successfully acquired by X-ray computed tomography with spatial resolution ranging from 4.5 to 25 micrometers. The success mainly depended on specimen immobilization. More than [Formula: see text] of the canals were successfully detected and tracked by the image-processing method developed. Thus obtained three-dimensional representation of the canal network was generated for the first time without the need of histological or other destructive methods. Several canal patterns were observed. Although most of them were simple, i.e. only followed the main branch or "turned" into a secondary branch, many others bifurcated or fused. A majority of bifurcations were observed at branching points. However, some canals appeared and/or ended anywhere along a branch. At the tip of a branch, all canals fused into a unique chamber. Three-dimensional high-resolution tomographic imaging gives a non-destructive insight to the coral ultrastructure and helps understanding the organization of the canal network. Advanced image-processing techniques greatly reduce human observer's effort and provide methods to both visualize and quantify the structures of interest.

Project description:BackgroundAccurate delineation of knee bone boundaries is crucial for computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) and effective treatment planning in knee diseases. Current methods often struggle with precise segmentation due to the knee joint's complexity, which includes intricate bone structures and overlapping soft tissues. These challenges are further complicated by variations in patient anatomy and image quality, highlighting the need for improved techniques. This paper presents a novel semi-automatic segmentation method for extracting knee bones from sequential computed tomography (CT) images.MethodsOur approach integrates the fuzzy C-means (FCM) algorithm with an adaptive region-based active contour model (ACM). Initially, the FCM algorithm assigns membership degrees to each voxel, distinguishing bone regions from surrounding soft tissues based on their likelihood of belonging to specific bone regions. Subsequently, the adaptive region-based ACM utilizes these membership degrees to guide the contour evolution and refine segmentation boundaries. To ensure clinical applicability, we further enhance our method using the marching cubes algorithm to reconstruct a three-dimensional (3D) model. We evaluated the method on six randomly selected knee joints.ResultsWe evaluated the method using quantitative metrics such as the Dice coefficient, sensitivity, specificity, and geometrical assessment. Our method achieved high Dice scores for the femur (98.95%), tibia (98.10%), and patella (97.14%), demonstrating superior accuracy. Remarkably low root mean square distance (RSD) values were obtained for the tibia and femur (0.5±0.14 mm) and patella (0.6±0.13 mm), indicating precise segmentation.ConclusionsThe proposed method offers significant advancements in CAD systems for knee pathologies. Our approach demonstrates superior performance in achieving precise and accurate segmentation of knee bones, providing valuable insights for anatomical analysis, surgical planning, and patient-specific prostheses.

Project description:BackgroundHigh quality 3D information of the microscopic plant tissue morphology-the spatial organization of cells and intercellular spaces in tissues-helps in understanding physiological processes in a wide variety of plants and tissues. X-ray micro-CT is a valuable tool that is becoming increasingly available in plant research to obtain 3D microstructural information of the intercellular pore space and individual pore sizes and shapes of tissues. However, individual cell morphology is difficult to retrieve from micro-CT as cells cannot be segmented properly due to negligible density differences at cell-to-cell interfaces. To address this, deep learning-based models were trained and tested to segment individual cells using X-ray micro-CT images of parenchyma tissue samples from apple and pear fruit with different cell and porosity characteristics.ResultsThe best segmentation model achieved an Aggregated Jaccard Index (AJI) of 0.86 and 0.73 for apple and pear tissue, respectively, which is an improvement over the current benchmark method that achieved AJIs of 0.73 and 0.67. Furthermore, the neural network was able to detect other plant tissue structures such as vascular bundles and stone cell clusters (brachysclereids), of which the latter were shown to strongly influence the spatial organization of pear cells. Based on the AJIs, apple tissue was found to be easier to segment, as the porosity and specific surface area of the pore space are higher and lower, respectively, compared to pear tissue. Moreover, samples with lower pore network connectivity, proved very difficult to segment.ConclusionsThe proposed method can be used to automatically quantify 3D cell morphology of plant tissue from micro-CT instead of opting for laborious manual annotations or less accurate segmentation approaches. In case fruit tissue porosity or pore network connectivity is too low or the specific surface area of the pore space too high, native X-ray micro-CT is unable to provide proper marker points of cell outlines, and one should rely on more elaborate contrast-enhancing scan protocols.

Project description:PurposeVascular remodeling is a significant pathological feature of various pulmonary diseases, which may be assessed by quantitative computed tomography (CT) imaging. The purpose of this study was therefore to develop and validate an automatic method for quantifying pulmonary vascular morphology in CT images.MethodsThe proposed method consists of pulmonary vessel extraction and quantification. For extracting pulmonary vessels, a graph-cuts-based method is proposed which considers appearance (CT intensity) and shape (vesselness from a Hessian-based filter) features, and incorporates distance to the airways into the cost function to prevent false detection of airway walls. For quantifying the extracted pulmonary vessels, a radius histogram is generated by counting the occurrence of vessel radii, calculated from a distance transform-based method. Subsequently, two biomarkers, slope α and intercept β, are calculated by linear regression on the radius histogram. A public data set from the VESSEL12 challenge was used to independently evaluate the vessel extraction. The quantitative analysis method was validated using images of a three-dimensional (3D) printed vessel phantom, scanned by a clinical CT scanner and a micro-CT scanner (to obtain a gold standard). To confirm the association between imaging biomarkers and pulmonary function, 77 scleroderma patients were investigated with the proposed method.ResultsIn the independent evaluation with the public data set, our vessel segmentation method obtained an area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve of 0.976. The median radius difference between clinical and micro-CT scans of a 3D printed vessel phantom was 0.062 ± 0.020 mm, with interquartile range of 0.199 ± 0.050 mm. In the studied patient group, a significant correlation between diffusion capacity for carbon monoxide and the biomarkers, α (R = -0.27, P = 0.018) and β (R = 0.321, P = 0.004), was obtained.ConclusionIn conclusion, the proposed method was validated independently using a public data set resulting in an area under the ROC curve of 0.976 and using a 3D printed vessel phantom data set, showing a vessel sizing error of 0.062 mm (0.16 in-plane pixel units). The correlation between imaging biomarkers and diffusion capacity in a clinical data set confirmed an association between lung structure and function. This quantification of pulmonary vascular morphology may be helpful in understanding the pathophysiology of pulmonary vascular diseases.
