Deep magma storage during the 2021 La Palma eruption.

ABSTRACT: The 2021 La Palma eruption provided an unpreceded opportunity to test the relationship between earthquake hypocenters and the location of magma reservoirs. We performed density measurements on CO₂-rich fluid inclusions (FIs) hosted in olivine crystals that are highly sensitive to pressure via calibrated Raman spectroscopy. This technique can revolutionize our knowledge of magma storage and transport during an ongoing eruption, given that it can produce precise magma storage depth constraints in near real time with minimal sample preparation. Our FIs have CO₂ recorded densities from 0.73 to 0.98 g/cm³, translating into depths of 15 to 27 km, which falls within the reported deep seismic zone recording the main melt storage reservoir.

Project description:Understanding the drivers of the onset, evolution, and end of eruptions and their impact on eruption style is critical in eruption forecasting and emergency management. The composition of erupted liquids is a key piece of the volcano puzzle, but untangling subtle melt variations remains an analytical challenge. Here, we apply rapid, high-resolution matrix geochemical analysis on samples of known eruption date spanning the entire 2021 La Palma eruption. Sr isotope signatures reveal distinct pulses of basanite melt driving the onset, restart, and evolution of the eruption. Elemental variations in matrix and microcrysts track progressive invasion, and draining, of a subcrustal crystal mush. Associated variations in lava flow rate, vent development, seismicity, and SO2 emission demonstrate that volcanic matrix resolves eruption patterns that could be expected in future basaltic eruptions globally.

Shallow magmatic intrusion evolution below La Palma before and during the 2021 eruption.

Project description:La Palma, Canary Islands, underwent volcanic unrest which culminated in its largest historical eruption. We study this unrest along 2021 using Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) and a new improved interpretation methodology, comparing achieved results with the crustal structure. We reproduce the final phase of La Palma volcanic unrest, highligthing a shallow magma accumulation which begins about 3.5 months before the eruption in a crustal volume charactherized by low density and fractured rocks. Our modeling, together with our improved pictures of the crustal structure, allows us to explain the location and characteristics of the eruption and to detect failed eruption paths. These can be used to explain post-eruptive phenomena and hazards to the local population, such as detected gases anomalies in La Bombilla and Puerto Naos. Our results have implications for understanding volcanic activity in the Canaries and volcano monitoring elsewhere, helping to support decision-making and providing significant insights into urban and infrastructure planning in volcanic areas.

Eruption of ultralow-viscosity basanite magma at Cumbre Vieja, La Palma, Canary Islands.

Project description:The viscosity of magma exerts control on all aspects of its migration through the crust to eruption. This was particularly true for the 2021 eruption of Cumbre Vieja (La Palma), which produced exceptionally fast and fluid lava at high discharge rates. We have performed concentric cylinder experiments to determine the effective viscosities of the Cumbre Vieja magma, while accounting for its chemistry, crystallinity, and temperature. Here we show that this event produced a nepheline-normative basanite with the lowest viscosity of historical basaltic eruptions, exhibiting values of less than 10 to about 160 Pa s within eruption temperatures of ~1200 to ~1150 °C. The magma's low viscosity was responsible for many eruptive phenomena that lead to particularly impactful events, including high-Reynolds number turbulent flow and supercritical states. Increases in viscosity due to crystallization-induced melt differentiation were subdued in this eruption, due in part to subtle degrees of silica enrichment in alkaline magma.

Magmatic plumbing and dynamic evolution of the 2021 La Palma eruption.

Project description:The 2021 volcanic eruption at La Palma, Canary Islands, was the island's most voluminous historical eruption. Little is known about this volcano's feeding system. During the eruption, seismicity was distributed in two clusters at ~10-14 km and ~33-39 km depth, separated by an aseismic zone. This gap coincides with the location of weak seismic swarms in 2017-2021 and where petrological data have implied pre-eruptive magma storage. Here we use seismological methods to understand the seismic response to magma transfer, with 8,488 hypocentral relocations resolving small-scale seismogenic structures, and 156 moment tensors identifying stress heterogeneities and principal axes flips. Results suggest a long-lasting preparatory stage with the progressive destabilisation of an intermediate, mushy reservoir, and a co-eruptive stage with seismicity controlled by the drainage and interplay of two localised reservoirs. Our study provides new insights into the plumbing system that will improve the monitoring of future eruptions in the island.

Volcanic monitoring of the 2021 La Palma eruption using long-period magnetotelluric data.

Project description:Between September and December 2021, the first subaerial volcanic eruption in the Canary Islands in 50 years took place on the island of La Palma. Since November 2021, we have been conducting a long-period magnetotelluric (MT) monitoring experiment at a site located 2.4 km east of the volcanic cone. Having continuously recorded data since then, the obtained dataset shows significant changes in resistivity over the fourteen months following the eruption: more than ± 20% in apparent resistivity and ± 2 degrees in phase. These temporal variations in electrical resistivity, recorded continuously using long-period MT during both the syn- and post-eruptive stages, have not been reported to date, making this dataset unique. Four estimated impedances have been selected as representatives of the major temporal changes observed and inverted to generate new 3-D resistivity models. The results provide novel key information on the spatiotemporal evolution of the subsoil's electrical resistivity, enabling the characterization of a set of structures acting as preferred magmatic fluid pathways. Therefore, our study highlights the strong potential of MT as a volcanic monitoring tool and provides new insights about the evolution of the fluid pathways during the post-eruptive stage. These findings enhance our understanding of the magmatic system and may contribute to volcanic hazard mitigation in the future.

Tidal modulation of the seismic activity related to the 2021 La Palma volcanic eruption.

Project description:The volcanic eruption at La Palma started on September 19, 2021. The eruption was preceded by a seismic swarm that began on September 11, although anomalous seismicity has been observed on the island since 2017. During the co-eruptive phase of the seismic activity, hypocenters depth was generally less than 15 km, save for the period between November 10 and November 27, when hypocenters ranged in the depth from 15 to 40 km. The eruption ended on December 13, 2021. We compute tidal stress for each earthquake at the hypocenter depth and find statistically significant correlations between the occurrence times of the earthquakes and the confining tidal stress values and stress rates. The correlation is depth-dependent, and ocean-loading tides have a stronger effect than body tides. We find that tidal stress variations contribute to the eruption onset and that certain explosive events, typical in Strombolian type volcanoes, seem to occur preferentially when the tidal stress rate is high. Our analysis supports the hypothesis that tides may modulate earthquake activity in volcanic areas, specifically during magma migration at shallow depths. A conceptual model is proposed, which could have a general application in the Canary Islands archipelago and other volcanic islands.

The ephemeral fumarolic mineralization of the 2021 Tajogaite volcanic eruption (La Palma, Canary Islands, Spain).

Project description:The present work aims to characterize the ephemeral mineral assemblage related to the fumarolic fields of the Tajogaite volcano, formed in 2021 in La Palma Island (Canary Islands, Spain). A set of 73 samples was obtained after two sampling campaigns in different fumarole sectors of the studied area. Mineralization related to these fumaroles formed efflorescent patches located at variable distance from the main volcanic craters. Distal patches are predominantly whitish, while in the vicinities they typically show yellowish to orange colours. Field observations also revealed that fumaroles usually occur in elevated topographic areas as well as over fractured and porous volcanic pyroclastic materials. The mineralogical and textural characterisation of the Tajogaite fumaroles unfolds a complex mineral assemblage, comprising cryptocrystalline phases related to low (< 200 °C) and medium temperature (200-400 °C) conditions. In Tajogaite, we propose a classification of three different fumarolic mineralization types: (1) fluorides and chlorides located in proximal fumarolic areas (~ 300-180 °C); (2) native sulphur associated with gypsum, mascagnite and salammoniac (~ 120-100 °C) and (3) sulphates and alkaline carbonates typically occurred in distal fumarolic areas (< 100 °C). Finally, we present a schematic model of the formation of Tajogaite fumarolic mineralization and their compositional evolution developed during the cooling of the volcanic system.

Hydroacoustic sensing of seismic events during the Tajogaite volcanic eruption (La Palma, Spain).

Project description:Volcanic processes generate a variety of seismic events that can be detected by both on-land and underwater sensors. During the 2021 subaerial eruption of the Tajogaite volcano on La Palma Island (Canary Islands, NW Africa), an underwater acoustic sensor was strategically deployed to monitor seismic activity. This study presents marine passive acoustic monitoring data from a moored hydrophone deployed offshore at a depth of 77 m and 7 km from the volcanic vent, both during and after the eruption. We compare hydrophone recordings with island's seismic network and earthquake database from the Instituto Geográfico Nacional (IGN). By calculating acoustic metrics and analyzing low-frequency bands (< 100 Hz), we identified 712 impulsive acoustic signals consistent with seismic events recorded in the seismic catalogue. These acoustic signals were double-pulsed, low-frequency (≤ 50 Hz with peak frequencies ≤ 15 Hz) and exhibited sound levels that well correlated with earthquake magnitudes. Our findings demonstrate that shallow-water hydro-acoustics can detect and estimate the magnitude of volcano-tectonic earthquakes in the studied scenario. These results encourage for the integration of hydro-acoustic monitoring in conjunction with on-land seismic stations to enhance the overall monitoring of the investigated volcanic area seismic activity.
