Oxygen Adsorption on Polar and Non-Polar Zn:ZnO Heterostructures from First Principles.

ABSTRACT: Zn:ZnO nanostructures have been studied extensively due to their potential use in many applications, such as oxygen scavengers for food packaging applications. Under atmospheric conditions, ZnO grows on the surface of Zn via an oxidation process. The mechanisms governing Zn oxidation are still not fully understood, with classical oxidation models, such as the Cabrera Mott, underestimating the oxide thickness of Zn:ZnO core-shell structures. In this work, Ab initio DFT calculations were performed to assess the adsorption properties of oxygen molecules on Zn:ZnO heterostructures to help elucidate the mechanisms involved in the growth of a ZnO film on a Zn substrate. Results suggest that the charge transfer mechanism from the Zn:ZnO heterostructures to the adsorbed oxygen layer can be promoted by two different processes: the electronic doping of ZnO due to the formation of the Zn:ZnO interface and the excess surface charge due to the presence of dangling bonds on the as cleaved ZnO.

Zn vacancy induced green luminescence on non-polar surfaces in ZnO nanostructures.

Project description:Although generally ascribed to the presence of defects, an ultimate assignment of the different contributions to the emission spectrum in terms of surface states and deep levels in ZnO nanostructures is still lacking. In this work we unambiguously give first evidence that zinc vacancies at the (1010) nonpolar surfaces are responsible for the green luminescence of ZnO nanostructures. The result is obtained by performing an exhaustive comparison between spatially resolved cathodoluminescence spectroscopy and imaging and ab initio simulations. Our findings are crucial to control undesired recombinations in nanostructured devices.

Hydrogen Adsorption on the Vertical Heterostructures of Graphene and Two-Dimensional Electrides: A First-Principles Study.

Project description:Synergetic effects in two-dimensional heterostructures have attracted considerable attention in the field of catalysis. Herein, we present a first-principles study of hydrogen adsorption on the vertical heterostructures of graphene and electride (Ca2N or Y2C) monolayers. Density functional theory calculations revealed that a substantial charge transfer from the electride layers to the graphene facilitated hydrogen adsorption onto the graphene. The graphene/Ca2N and graphene/Y2C heterostructures possess adsorption free energies of 0.73 and 0.51 eV, respectively, much lower than that of the pristine graphene (1.9 eV). Moreover, doping graphene with N can further reduce the adsorption free energy of the heterostructures down to 0.29 eV, close to the optimal zero value. These results suggest that heterostructure formation activates graphene for hydrogen-evolution reactions, providing an innovative and promising strategy for hydrogen production.

Formaldehyde Molecules Adsorption on Zn Doped Monolayer MoS<sub>2</sub>: A First-Principles Calculation.

Project description:Based on the first principles of density functional theory, the adsorption behavior of H2CO on original monolayer MoS2 and Zn doped monolayer MoS2 was studied. The results show that the adsorption of H2CO on the original monolayer MoS2 is very weak, and the electronic structure of the substrate changes little after adsorption. A new kind of surface single cluster catalyst was formed after Zn doped monolayer MoS2, where the ZnMo3 small clusters made the surface have high selectivity. The adsorption behavior of H2CO on Zn doped monolayer MoS2 can be divided into two situations. When the H-end of H2CO molecule in the adsorption structure is downward, the adsorption energy is only 0.11 and 0.15 eV and the electronic structure of adsorbed substrate changes smaller. When the O-end of H2CO molecule is downward, the interaction between H2CO and the doped MoS2 is strong leading to the chemical adsorption with the adsorption energy of 0.80 and 0.98 eV. For the O-end-down structure, the adsorption obviously introduces new impurity states into the band gap or results in the redistribution of the original impurity states. All of these may lead to the change of the chemical properties of the doped MoS2 monolayer, which can be used to detect the adsorbed H2CO molecules. The results show that the introduction of appropriate dopant may be a feasible method to improve the performance of MoS2 gas sensor.

Photocatalytic Properties of ZnO:Al/MAPbI3/Fe2O3 Heterostructure: First-Principles Calculations.

Project description:We report on theoretical investigations of a methylammonium lead halide perovskite system loaded with iron oxide and aluminum zinc oxide (ZnO:Al/MAPbI3/Fe2O3) as a potential photocatalyst. When excited with visible light, this heterostructure is demonstrated to achieve a high hydrogen production yield via a z-scheme photocatalysis mechanism. The Fe2O3: MAPbI3 heterojunction plays the role of an electron donor, favoring the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), and the ZnO:Al compound acts as a shield against ions, preventing the surface degradation of MAPbI3 during the reaction, hence improving the charge transfer in the electrolyte. Moreover, our findings indicate that the ZnO:Al/MAPbI3 heterostructure effectively enhances electrons/holes separation and reduces their recombination, which drastically improves the photocatalytic activity. Based on our calculations, our heterostructure yields a high hydrogen production rate, estimated to be 265.05 μmol/g and 362.99 μmol/g, respectively, for a neutral pH and an acidic pH of 5. These theoretical yield values are very promising and provide interesting inputs for the development of stable halide perovskites known for their superlative photocatalytic properties.

A First Principles Study of Lithium Adsorption in Nanoporous Graphene.

Project description:Recently, nanoporous graphene has attracted great interest in the scientific community. It possesses nano-sized holes; thus, it has a highly accessible surface area for lithium adsorption for energy storage applications. Defective graphene has been extensively studied. However, the lithium adsorption mechanism of nanoporous graphene is not clearly understood yet. Here, we present theoretical investigations on the lithium-ion adsorption mechanism in nanoporous graphene. We perform ab initio electronic structure calculations based on density functional theory. Lithium adsorption in a graphene nanopore is studied and adsorption sites are determined. We also study different lithium-ion distributions in graphene nanopores to determine the best lithium-nanoporous graphene structures for lithium-ion batteries. We show that lithium ions can be adsorbed in a graphene nanopore, even in a single layer of graphene. It is also shown that adding more nanopores to multilayer nanoporous graphene can result in higher Li storage capacity for new-generation lithium-ion batteries.

A First Principles Study of H₂ Adsorption on LaNiO₃(001) Surfaces.

Project description:The adsorption of H₂ on LaNiO₃ was investigated using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The adsorption sites, adsorption energy, and electronic structure of LaNiO₃(001)/H₂ systems were calculated and indicated through the calculated surface energy that the (001) surface was the most stable surface. By looking at optimized structure, adsorption energy and dissociation energy, we found that there were three types of adsorption on the surface. First, H₂ molecules completely dissociate and then tend to bind with the O atoms, forming two -OH bonds. Second, H₂ molecules partially dissociate with the H atoms bonding to the same O atom to form one H₂O molecule. These two types are chemical adsorption modes; however, the physical adsorption of H₂ molecules can also occur. When analyzing the electron structure of the H₂O molecule formed by the partial dissociation of the H₂ molecule and the surface O atom, we found that the interaction between H₂O and the (001) surface was weaker, thus, H₂O was easier to separate from the surface to create an O vacancy. On the (001) surface, a supercell was constructed to accurately study the most stable adsorption site. The results from analyses of the charge population; electron localization function; and density of the states indicated that the dissociated H and O atoms form a typical covalent bond and that the interaction between the H₂ molecule and surface is mainly due to the overlap-hybridization among the H 1s, O 2s, and O 2p states. Therefore, the conductivity of LaNiO₃(001)/H₂ is stronger after adsorption and furthermore, the conductivity of the LaNiO₃ surface is better than that of the LaFeO₃ surface.

Fabrication of Schottky Diodes on Zn-polar BeMgZnO/ZnO Heterostructure Grown by Plasma-assisted Molecular Beam Epitaxy.

Project description:Heterostructure field effect transistors (HFETs) utilizing a two dimensional electron gas (2DEG) channel have a great potential for high speed device applications. Zinc oxide (ZnO), a semiconductor with a wide bandgap (3.4 eV) and high electron saturation velocity has gained a great deal of attention as an attractive material for high speed devices. Efficient gate modulation, however, requires high-quality Schottky contacts on the barrier layer. In this article, we present our Schottky diode fabrication procedure on Zn-polar BeMgZnO/ZnO heterostructure with high density 2DEG which is achieved through strain modulation and incorporation of a few percent Be into the MgZnO-based barrier during growth by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). To achieve high crystalline quality, nearly lattice-matched high-resistivity GaN templates grown by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) are used as the substrate for the subsequent MBE growth of the oxide layers. To obtain the requisite Zn-polarity, careful surface treatment of GaN templates and control over the VI/II ratio during the growth of low temperature ZnO nucleation layer are utilized. Ti/Au electrodes serve as Ohmic contacts, and Ag electrodes deposited on the O2 plasma pretreated BeMgZnO surface are used for Schottky contacts.

Photo-oscillations in MgZnO/ZnO heterostructures.

Project description:We theoretically examine the characteristics of microwave-induced magnetoresistance (MIRO) and photovoltage oscillations in MgZno/ZnO heterostructures. We demonstrate that both kind of oscillations, although described with different physical properties, are intimately related sharing the same physical origin. We use the radiation driven electron orbit model showing that the interplay of radiation driven swinging Landau orbits and the scattering processes are at the heart of the oscillations in both scenarios. Thus, our simulations show that all photo-oscillations present the main features of MIRO: they are periodic with the inverse of the magnetic field and the oscillations minima are 1/4 cycle shifted.

First-Principles Dynamics of Fluorine Adsorption on Clean and Monohydrogenated Si{001}.

Project description:The interaction of highly reactive species with solid surfaces can result in modes of adsorption quite distinct from the classic molecular and dissociative events that are usually thought to dominate. For instance, compelling experimental evidence suggests that adsorption of F2 at the Si{001} surface is often initiated by abstraction (and binding at the surface) of just one fluorine atom from the molecule; the second fluorine atom subsequently experiences either a separate atomic adsorption event or ejection from the surface altogether. Molecular dynamics simulations using empirical potentials support this concept but massively overestimate the prevalence of atomic ejection. In this work, we report first-principles molecular dynamics calculations that correctly show atomic ejection to be rare while providing insight into the details of abstractive adsorption. In addition, we also examine the case of F2 adsorption onto a monohydrogenated Si{001} surface, finding evidence for a different type of abstractive adsorption, in which a hydrogen atom may be removed from the surface to form a short-lived HFF intermediate. The latter rapidly decomposes to produce either HF or (via reaction with another surface hydrogen atom) H2.

First-principles investigation of adsorption behaviors of small molecules on penta-graphene.

Project description:The gas-adsorption behaviors of small molecules CO, H2O, H2S, NH3, SO2, and NO on pristine penta-graphene (PG) were investigated using first-principles calculations to explore their potential for use as advanced gas-sensing materials. Results show that, except for CO, H2O, H2S, NH3, and SO2 are physically adsorbed on the surface of penta-graphene with considerable adsorption energy and moderate charge transfer, while NO is prone to be chemically adsorbed on the surface of penta-graphene. Moreover, the electronic properties of PG can be effectively modified after H2O, H2S, NH3, SO2, and NO are adsorbed, and penta-graphene has potential for using in gas sensors via the charge-transfer mechanism.
