Project description:Separation systems utilizing silver(I) ion-olefin complexation have limitations since silver(I) ions can be poisoned or reduced to metallic silver. Ionic liquids (ILs) are used as solvents for silver(I) ions to facilitate separations since their physico-chemical properties can be easily tuned. To develop separation systems with sustainable olefin selectivity, factors that affect silver(I) ion stability need to be understood. In this study, a total of 13 silver salt/IL mixtures were examined by inverse gas chromatography to identify the effects of silver salt anion and IL cation/anion combination on silver(I) ion stability. The effects of temperature and three different exposure gases on silver(I) ion stability were systematically studied. Exposing silver salt/IL mixtures to hydrogen at high temperatures had a greater effect on decreasing silver(I) ion-olefin complexation. Silver(I) ions from the silver bis[(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl]imide ([NTf2 -]) salt were more stable in [NTf2 -]-containing ILs than in [BF4 -]-containing ILs. Optimum mixtures exhibited high olefin selectivity and were stable beyond 90 h when exposed to hydrogen gas.

Project description:Room temperature ionic liquids typically contain asymmetric organic cations. The asymmetry is thought to enhance disorder, thereby providing an entropic counter-balance to the strong, enthalpic, ionic interactions, and leading, therefore, to lower melting points. Unfortunately, the synthesis and purification of such asymmetric cations is typically more demanding. Here we introduce novel room temperature ionic liquids in which both cation and anion are formally symmetric. The chemical basis for this unprecedented behaviour is the incorporation of ether-containing side chains - which increase the configurational entropy - in the cation. Molecular dynamics simulations indicate that the ether-containing side chains transiently sample curled configurations. Our results contradict the long-standing paradigm that at least one asymmetric ion is required for ionic liquids to be molten at room temperature, and hence open up new and simpler design pathways for these remarkable materials.

Project description:Twenty-eight quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) sensors coated with different sensing films were tested and analyzed in this work; twenty-three sensors were coated in different room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) and five additional QCM sensors were coated with conventional films commonly used as stationary phases in gas chromatography. Four volatile organic compounds (VOCs), in gaseous phase-hexanol, butyl acetate, 2-hexanone, and hexanoic acid-were measured. Two transducer mechanisms were used; resonant frequency shift and resistance shift of a QCM Mason equivalent circuit. The sensors were characterized by their sensitivity to the VOCs and their discrimination power of the four VOCs. The highest separation among VOCs was obtained when frequency and resistance information of both RTIL and conventional films was used, a sensor array composed by two RTILs (1-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide and 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate) and two conventional films (tricresyl phosphate and apiezon-L) was found to improve the Wilks lambda separation for the tested gases two orders of magnitude compared to the Wilks lambda using only a conventional films array.

Project description:Efficient olefin/paraffin separation is a grand challenge because of their similar molecular sizes and physical properties, and is also a priority in the modern chemical industry. Membrane separation technology has been demonstrated as a promising technology owing to its low energy consumption, mild operation conditions, tunability of membrane materials, as well as the integration of physical and chemical mechanisms. In this work, inspired by the physical mechanism of mass transport in channel proteins and the chemical mechanism of mass transport in carrier proteins, recent progress in channel-based and carrier-based membranes toward olefin/paraffin separations is summarized. Further, channel-based membranes are categorized into membranes with network structures and with framework structures according to the morphology of channels. The separation mechanisms, separation performance, and membrane stability in channel-based and carrier-based membranes are elaborated. Future perspectives toward membrane-based olefin/paraffin separation are proposed.

Project description:Screen-printed graphite electrodes (SPGEs) have been used for the first time as platforms to detect oxygen gas in room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs). Up until now, carbon-based SPEs have shown inferior behaviour compared to platinum and gold SPEs for gas sensing with RTIL solvents. The electrochemical reduction of oxygen (O₂) in a range of RTILs has therefore been explored on home-made SPGEs, and is compared to the behaviour on commercially-available carbon SPEs (C-SPEs). Six common RTILs are initially employed for O₂ detection using cyclic voltammetry (CV), and two RTILs ([C₂mim][NTf₂] and [C₄mim][PF₆]) chosen for further detailed analytical studies. Long-term chronoamperometry (LTCA) was also performed to test the ability of the sensor surface for real-time gas monitoring. Both CV and LTCA gave linear calibration graphs-for CV in the 10-100% vol. range, and for LTCA in the 0.1-20% vol. range-on the SPGE. The responses on the SPGE were far superior to the commercial C-SPEs; more instability in the electrochemical responses were observed on the C-SPEs, together with some breaking-up or dissolution of the electrode surface materials. This study highlights that not all screen-printed ink formulations are compatible with RTIL solvents for longer-term electrochemical experiments, and that the choice of RTIL is also important. Overall, the low-cost SPGEs appear to be promising platforms for the detection of O₂, particularly in [C₄mim][PF₆].

Project description:The intelligent choice of extractants and entrainers can improve current mixture separation techniques allowing better efficiency and sustainability of chemical processes that are both used in industry and laboratory practice. The most promising approach is a straightforward comparison of selectivity at infinite dilution between potential candidates. However, selectivity at infinite dilution values are rarely available for most compounds so a theoretical estimation is highly desired. In this study, we suggest a Quantitative Structure-Property Relationship (QSPR) approach to the modelling of the selectivity at infinite dilution of ionic liquids. Additionally, auxiliary models were developed to overcome the potential bias from big activity coefficient at infinite dilution from the solute. Data from SelinfDB database was used as training and internal validation sets in QSPR model development. External validation was done with the data from literature. The selection of the best models was done using decision functions that aim to diminish bias in prediction of the data points associated with the underrepresented ionic liquids or extreme temperatures. The best models were used for the virtual screening for potential azeotrope breakers of aniline + n-dodecane mixture. The subject of screening was a combinatorial library of ionic liquids, created based on the previously unused combinations of cations and anions from SelinfDB and the test set extractants. Both selectivity at infinite dilution and auxiliary models show good performance in the validation. Our models' predictions were compared to the ones of the COSMO-RS, where applicable, displaying smaller prediction error. The best ionic liquid to extract aniline from n-dodecane was suggested.

Project description:The "solid catalyst with ionic liquid layer" (SCILL) is an extremely successful new concept in heterogeneous catalysis. The idea is to boost the selectivity of a catalyst by its modification with an ionic liquid (IL). Here, we show that it is possible to use the same concept in electrocatalysis for the selective transformation of organic compounds. We scrutinize the electrooxidation of 2,3-butanediol, a reaction which yields two products, singly oxidized acetoin and doubly oxidized diacetyl. When adding the IL (1-ethyl-3-methyl-imidazolium trifluormethanesulfonate, [C2 C1 Im][OTf]), the selectivity for acetoin increases drastically. By in situ spectroscopy, we analyze the underlying mechanism: Specific adsorption of the IL anions suppresses the activation of water for the second oxidation step and, thus, enhances the selectivity for acetoin. Our study demonstrates the great potential of this approach for selective transformation of organic compounds.

Project description:Because of the appealing properties, ionic liquids (ILs) are believed to be promising alternatives for the CO2 absorption in the flue gas. Several ILs, such as [NH2emim][BF4], [C4mim][OAc], and [NH2emim[OAc], have been used to capture CO2 of the simulated flue gas in this work. The structural changes of the ILs before and after absorption were also investigated by quantum chemical methods, FTIR, and NMR technologies. However, the experimental results and theoretical calculation showed that the flue gas component SO2 would significantly weaken the CO2 absorption performance of the ILs. SO2 was more likely to react with the active sites of the ILs than CO2. To improve the absorption capacity, the ionic liquid (IL) mixture [C4mim][OAc]/ [NH2emim][BF4] were employed for the CO2 absorption of the flue gas. It is found that the CO2 absorption capacity would be increased by about 25%, even in the presence of SO2. The calculation results suggested that CO2 could not compete with SO2 for reacting with the IL during the absorption process. Nevertheless, SO2 might be first captured by the [NH2emim][BF4] of the IL mixture, and then the [C4mim][OAc] ionic liquid could absorb more CO2 without the interference of SO2.

Project description:Porous liquids are a new class of material that could have applications in areas such as gas separation and homogeneous catalysis. Here we use a combination of measurement techniques, molecular simulations, and control experiments to advance the quantitative understanding of these liquids. In particular, we show that the cage cavities remain unoccupied in the absence of a suitable guest, and that the liquids can adsorb large quantities of gas, with gas occupancy in the cages as high as 72% and 74% for Xe and SF6, respectively. Gases can be reversibly loaded and released by using non-chemical triggers such as sonication, suggesting potential for gas separation schemes. Diffusion NMR experiments show that gases are in dynamic equilibrium between a bound and unbound state in the cage cavities, in agreement with recent simulations for related porous liquids. Comparison with gas adsorption in porous organic cage solids suggests that porous liquids have similar gas binding affinities, and that the physical properties of the cage molecule are translated into the liquid state. By contrast, some physical properties are different: for example, solid homochiral porous cages show enantioselectivity for chiral aromatic alcohols, whereas the equivalent homochiral porous liquids do not. This can be attributed to a loss of supramolecular organisation in the isotropic porous liquid.
