The majority of the assembly (99.85%) is scaffolded into 9 chromosomal pseudomolecules. The mitochondrial genome was assembled and is 14.9 kilobases in length.

The genome of the rayed Mediterranean limpet Patella caerulea (Linnaeus, 1758).

Project description:Patella caerulea (Linnaeus, 1758) is a mollusc limpet species of the class Gastropoda. Endemic to the Mediterranean Sea, it is considered a keystone species due to its primary role in structuring and regulating the ecological balance of tidal and subtidal habitats. It is currently being used as a bioindicator to assess the environmental quality of coastal marine waters and as a model species to understand adaptation to ocean acidification. Here, we provide a high-quality reference genome assembly and annotation for P. caerulea. We generated ∼30 Gb of Pacific Biosciences high-fidelity data from a single individual and provide a final 749.8 Mb assembly containing 62 contigs, including the mitochondrial genome (14,938 bp). With an N50 of 48.8 Mb and 98% of the assembly contained in the 18 largest contigs, this assembly is near chromosome-scale. Benchmarking Universal Single-Copy Orthologs scores were high (Mollusca, 87.8% complete; Metazoa, 97.2% complete) and similar to metrics observed for other chromosome-level Patella genomes, highlighting a possible bias in the Mollusca database for Patellids. We generated transcriptomic Illumina data from a second individual collected at the same locality and used it together with protein evidence to annotate the genome. A total of 23,938 protein-coding gene models were found. By comparing this annotation with other published Patella annotations, we found that the distribution and median values of exon and gene lengths was comparable with other Patella species despite different annotation approaches. The present high-quality P. caerulea reference genome, available on GenBank (BioProject: PRJNA1045377; assembly: GCA_036850965.1), is an important resource for future ecological and evolutionary studies.

A highly conspicuous mineralized composite photonic architecture in the translucent shell of the blue-rayed limpet.

Project description:Many species rely on diverse selections of entirely organic photonic structures for the manipulation of light and the display of striking colours. Here we report the discovery of a mineralized hierarchical photonic architecture embedded within the translucent shell of the blue-rayed limpet Patella pellucida. The bright colour of the limpet's stripes originates from light interference in a periodically layered zig-zag architecture of crystallographically co-oriented calcite lamellae. Beneath the photonic multilayer, a disordered array of light-absorbing particles provides contrast for the blue colour. This unique mineralized manifestation of a synergy of two distinct optical elements at specific locations within the continuum of the limpet's translucent protective shell ensures the vivid shine of the blue stripes, which can be perceived under water from a wide range of viewing angles. The stripes' reflection band coincides with the spectral range of minimal light absorption in sea water, raising intriguing questions regarding their functional significance.

Project description:Natural history collections are fundamental for biodiversity research as well as for any applied environment-related research. These collections can be seen as archives of earth´s life providing the basis to address highly relevant scientific questions such as how biodiversity changes in certain environments, either through evolutionary processes in a geological timescale, or by man-made transformation of habitats throughout the last decades and/or centuries. A prominent example is the decline of the European flat oyster Ostrea edulis Linneaus, 1758 in the North Sea and the concomitant invasion of the common limpet slipper Crepidula fornicata, which has been implicated to have negative effects on O. edulis. We used collections to analyse population changes in both species in the North Sea. In order to reconstruct the change in distribution and diversity over the past 200 years, we combined the temporal and spatial information recorded with the collected specimens contained in several European natural history collections. Our data recover the decline of O. edulis in the North Sea from the 19th century to the present and the process of invasion of C. fornicata. Importantly, the decline of O. edulis was nearly completed before C. fornicata appeared in the North Sea, suggesting that the latter had nothing to do with the local extinction of O. edulis in the North Sea.
