Misfolded endoplasmic reticulum proteins are retro-translocated through the membrane into the cytosol, where they are poly-ubiquitinated, extracted from the membrane, and degraded by the proteasome-a pathway termed endoplasmic reticulum-associated protein degradation (ERAD).
