Extracellular electron transfer by Geobacter species through surface appendages known as microbial nanowires<sup>1</sup> is important in a range of globally important environmental phenomena<sup>2</sup>, as well as for applications in bio-remediation, bioenergy, biofuels and bioelectronics.
