Despite the importance of microcompartments in prokaryotic biology and bioengineering, structural heterogeneity has prevented a complete understanding of their architecture, ultrastructure, and spatial organization. Here, we employ cryo-electron tomography to image α-carboxysomes, a pseudo-icosahedral microcompartment responsible for carbon fixation.
