The Na<sup>+</sup>-pumping NADH-ubiquinone oxidoreductase (Na<sup>+</sup>-NQR) couples electron transfer from NADH to ubiquinone with Na<sup>+</sup>-pumping, generating an electrochemical Na<sup>+</sup> gradient that is essential for energy-consuming reactions in bacteria.
