Project description:Tumorous cancer has been a widely known and well-studied medical phenomenon; however, rare diseases like Myeloproliferative Neoplasm (MPN) have received less attention, leading to delayed diagnosis. Despite the availability of advanced technology in diagnostic tools that can boost the procedure, the morphological assessment of bone marrow trephine (BMT) images remains critical to confirm and differentiate MPN subtypes. This paper reports a histopathological imagery dataset that was created to focus on the most common MPN from the Philadelphia Chromosome (Ph)-negative type, namely Essential Thrombocythemia (ET), Polycythemia Vera (PV), and Primary Myelofibrosis (MF). The dataset consisted of 300 BMT images that can be used to enable computer vision applications, such as image segmentation, disease classification, and object recognition, in assisting the classification of the MPN disease. Ethical approval was obtained from the Ministry of Health, Malaysia and the bone marrow trephine images were captured using a digital microscope from the Olympus model (BX41 Dual head microscope) with x10, x20, and x40 lens types. The development of comprehensive tools deployed from this dataset can assist medical practitioners in diagnosing diseases, thus overcoming the current challenges.

Project description:BACKGROUND:The study of alcohol use frequency utilizes alcohol-related cue imagery. Although a number of alcohol-image databases currently exist, they have several limitations: Many are not publicly available, some use stock images or clip art rather than real photographs, several eliminate any photographs displaying brand information, and predominantly they contain relatively few images. The aim of this project was to develop a large, open-access database of alcohol-related cue images, containing photographs with and without brand information, taken in real-world environments, with images in a variety of orientations and dimensions. METHODS:The study collected 1,650 images voluntarily from the larger community, to capture photographs with a wide range of content, environments, and relation to alcohol. All images were then rated on scales of valence, arousal, and relation to alcohol by 1,008 Amazon Mechanical Turk workers, using classical emotion validation methods based on the International Affective Picture System (IAPS). Survey respondents were screened with the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT), and Cronbach's alpha scores were calculated to determine the interrater reliability of scores across the whole sample, and within low-risk, moderate-risk, and high-risk drinkers for each rating domain. Univariate ANOVAs were run to determine differences in ratings across drinking groups. RESULTS:All Cronbach's alpha scores indicated high interrater reliability within the whole sample, and across drinking severity groups. Tukey's HSD post hoc results indicated greater arousal and affect in response to image viewing in moderate- and high-risk drinkers, and higher relation-to-alcohol ratings in low-risk drinkers. All images had categorization tags assigned by members of the study team. CONCLUSIONS:The established imagery set includes 1,650 alcohol-related images, rated on scales of valence, arousal, and relation to alcohol, and categorized by type of alcohol depicted. The imagery database will be available for open-access download and use through Google Photos.

Project description:Applying manure to pasture fields is a very common method of fertilization. However, rainfall can cause the manure to leach into water bodies near the field, contaminating the water and damaging the environment and the animals living in it, ultimately affecting human life. This paper presents a dataset consisting of images of 30 plots after manure application, verified by on-site investigations. This involved visiting 38 different plots, of which 8 were discarded because they were not suitable, either because of their small size, the lack of a specific manure application date, or the images being too cloudy in that period. The imagery is collected through Google Earth Engine using the satellite Sentinel-2, which offers 13 hyperspectral bands in the range of ultraviolet and near-infrared wavelengths including the visible spectrum. From these 13 bands, the most common hyperspectral indices in the literature for precision agriculture are calculated and added into the images as channels. 51 hyperspectral indices are calculated, summing up to a total of 64 channels per image when adding the raw bands from Sentinel-2. No normalization has been performed on any of the channels. The data can be used for further research of automatic classification of manure application to control its use and prevent contamination.

Project description:When training Artificial Intelligence and Deep Learning models, especially by using Supervised Learning techniques, a labeled dataset is required to have an input with data and its corresponding labeled output data. In the case of images, for classification, segmentation, or other processing tasks, a pair of images is required in the same sense, one image as an input (the noisy image) and the desired (the denoised image) one as an output. For SAR despeckling applications, the common approach is to have a set of optical images that then are corrupted with synthetic noise, since there is no ground truth available. The corrupted image is considered the input and the optical one is the noiseless one (ground truth). In this paper, we provide a dataset based on actual SAR images. The ground truth was obtained from SAR images of Sentinel 1 of the same region in different instants of time and then they were processed and merged into one single image that serves as the output of the dataset. Every SAR image (noisy and ground truth) was split into 1600 images of 512 × 512 pixels, so a total of 3200 images were obtained. The dataset was also split into 3000 for training and 200 for validation, all of them available in four labeled folders.

Project description:Sea turtle populations are often assessed at the regional to sub-basin scale from discrete indices of nesting abundance. While this may be practical and sometimes effective, widespread in-water surveys may enhance assessments by including additional demographics, locations, and revealing emerging population trends. Here, we describe sea turtle observations from 13 years of towed-diver surveys across 53 coral islands, atolls, and reefs in the Central, West, and South Pacific. These surveys covered more than 7,300 linear km, and observed more than 3,400 green (Chelonia mydas) and hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricata) sea turtles. From these data, we estimated sea turtle densities, described trends across space and time, and modelled the influence of environmental and anthropogenic drivers. Both species were patchily distributed across spatial scales, and green turtles were 11 times more abundant than hawksbills. The Pacific Remote Island Areas had the highest densities of greens (3.62 turtles km-1, Jarvis Island), while American Samoa had the most hawksbills (0.12 turtles km-1, Ta'u Island). The Hawaiian Islands had the lowest turtle densities (island ave = 0.07 turtles km-1) yet the highest annual population growth (μ = 0.08, σ = 0.22), suggesting extensive management protections can yield positive conservation results. Densities peaked at 27.5°C SST, in areas of high productivity and low human impact, and were consistent with patterns of historic overexploitation. Though such intensive surveys have great value, they are logistically demanding and therefore have an uncertain budget and programmatic future. We hope the methods we described here may be applied to future comparatively low-cost surveys either with autonomous vehicles or with environmental DNA.

Project description:This article presents a geolocated dataset of rural home annotations on very high resolution satellite imagery from Uganda, Kenya, and Sierra Leone. This dataset was produced through a citizen science project called "Power to the People", which mapped rural homes for electrical infrastructure planning and computer-vision-based mapping. Additional details on this work are presented in "Power to the People: Applying citizen science to home-level mapping for rural energy access" [1]. 578,010 home annotations were made on approximately 1,267 km2 of imagery over 179 days by over 6,000 volunteers. The bounding-box annotations produced in this work have been anonymized and georeferenced. These raw annotations were found to have a precision of 49% and recall of 93% compared to a researcher-generated set of gold standard annotations. Data on roof colour and shape were also collected and are provided. Metadata about the sensors used to capture the original images and the annotation process are also attached to data records. While this dataset was collected for electrical infrastructure planning research, it can be useful in diverse sectors, including humanitarian assistance and public health.

Project description:Monitoring the shoreline over time is essential to quickly identify and mitigate environmental issues such as coastal erosion. Monitoring using satellite images has two great advantages, i.e., global coverage and frequent measurement updates; but adequate methods are needed to extract shoreline information from such images. To this purpose, there are valuable non-supervised methods, but more recent research has concentrated on deep learning because of its greater potential in terms of generality, flexibility, and measurement accuracy, which, in contrast, derive from the information contained in large datasets of labeled samples. The first problem to solve, therefore, lies in obtaining large datasets suitable for this specific measurement problem, and this is a difficult task, typically requiring human analysis of a large number of images. In this article, we propose a technique to automatically create a dataset of labeled satellite images suitable for training machine learning models for shoreline detection. The method is based on the integration of data from satellite photos and data from certified, publicly accessible shoreline data. It involves several automatic processing steps, aimed at building the best possible dataset, with images including both sea and land regions, and correct labeling also in the presence of complicated water edges (which can be open or closed curves). The use of independently certified measurements for labeling the satellite images avoids the great work required to manually annotate them by visual inspection, as is done in other works in the literature. This is especially true when convoluted shorelines are considered. In addition, possible errors due to the subjective interpretation of satellite images are also eliminated. The method is developed and used specifically to build a new dataset of Sentinel-2 images, denoted SNOWED; but is applicable to different satellite images with trivial modifications. The accuracy of labels in SNOWED is directly determined by the uncertainty of the shoreline data used, which leads to sub-pixel errors in most cases. Furthermore, the quality of the SNOWED dataset is assessed through the visual comparison of a random sample of images and their corresponding labels, and its functionality is shown by training a neural model for sea-land segmentation.

Project description:Vehicle detection is a very important aspect of computer vision application to aerial and satellite imagery, facilitating activities such as instance counting, velocity estimation, traffic predictions, etc. The feasibility of accurate vehicle detection often depends on limited training datasets, requiring a lot of manual work in collection and annotation tasks. Furthermore, there are no known publicly available datasets. Our aim was to construct a pipeline for synthetic dataset generation from aerial imagery and 3D models in Blender software. The dataset generation pipeline consists of seven steps and results in a wished number of images with bounding boxes in YOLO and coco formats. This synthetic dataset has been produced following the steps described in this pipeline. It consists of 5000 2048 × 2048 images with cars inserted into the roads and highways at the images without cars from all over the world. We believe that this dataset and the respective pipeline might be of great importance for vehicle detection, facilitating the customizability of the models to specific needs and context.

Project description:Recent advancements in brain computer interfaces (BCI) have demonstrated control of robotic systems by mental processes alone. Together with invasive BCI, electroencephalographic (EEG) BCI represent an important direction in the development of BCI systems. In the context of EEG BCI, the processing of EEG data is the key challenge. Unfortunately, advances in that direction have been complicated by a lack of large and uniform datasets that could be used to design and evaluate different data processing approaches. In this work, we release a large set of EEG BCI data collected during the development of a slow cortical potentials-based EEG BCI. The dataset contains 60 h of EEG recordings, 13 participants, 75 recording sessions, 201 individual EEG BCI interaction session-segments, and over 60 000 examples of motor imageries in 4 interaction paradigms. The current dataset presents one of the largest EEG BCI datasets publically available to date.

Project description:The green sturgeon (Acipenser medirostris) is a highly migratory, oceanic, anadromous species with a complex life history that makes it vulnerable to species-wide threats in both freshwater and at sea. Green sturgeon population declines have preceded legal protection and curtailment of activities in marine environments deemed to increase its extinction risk. Yet, its marine habitat is poorly understood. We built a statistical model to characterize green sturgeon marine habitat using data from a coastal tracking array located along the Siletz Reef near Newport, Oregon, USA that recorded the passage of 37 acoustically tagged green sturgeon. We classified seafloor physical habitat features with high-resolution bathymetric and backscatter data. We then described the distribution of habitat components and their relationship to green sturgeon presence using ordination and subsequently used generalized linear model selection to identify important habitat components. Finally, we summarized depth and temperature recordings from seven green sturgeon present off the Oregon coast that were fitted with pop-off archival geolocation tags. Our analyses indicated that green sturgeon, on average, spent a longer duration in areas with high seafloor complexity, especially where a greater proportion of the substrate consists of boulders. Green sturgeon in marine habitats are primarily found at depths of 20-60 meters and from 9.5-16.0°C. Many sturgeon in this study were likely migrating in a northward direction, moving deeper, and may have been using complex seafloor habitat because it coincides with the distribution of benthic prey taxa or provides refuge from predators. Identifying important green sturgeon marine habitat is an essential step towards accurately defining the conditions that are necessary for its survival and will eventually yield range-wide, spatially explicit predictions of green sturgeon distribution.
