Project description:Sotalia guianensis is a small dolphin that is vulnerable to anthropogenic impacts. Along the Brazilian Atlantic coast, this species is threatened with extinction. A prioritized action plan for conservation strategies relies on increased knowledge of the population. The scarcity of studies about genetic diversity and assessments of population structure for this animal have precluded effective action in the region. Here, we assessed, for the first time, the genetic differentiation at 14 microsatellite loci in 90 S. guianensis specimens stranded on the southeastern Atlantic coast of the State of Espírito Santo, Brazil. We estimated population parameters and structure, measured the significance of global gametic disequilibrium and the intensity of non-random multiallelic interallelic associations and constructed a provisional synteny map using Bos taurus, the closest terrestrial mammal with a reference genome available. All microsatellite loci were polymorphic, with at least three and a maximum of ten alleles each. Allele frequencies ranged from 0.01 to 0.97. Observed heterozygosity ranged from 0.061 to 0.701. The mean inbreeding coefficient was 0.103. Three loci were in Hardy-Weinberg disequilibrium even when missing genotypes were inferred. Although 77 of the 91 possible two-locus associations were in global gametic equilibrium, we unveiled 13 statistically significant, sign-based, non-random multiallelic interallelic associations in 10 two-locus combinations with either coupling (D' values ranging from 0.782 to 0.353) or repulsion (D' values -0.517 to -1.000) forces. Most of the interallelic associations did not involve the major alleles. Thus, for either physically or non-physically linked loci, measuring the intensity of non-random interallelic associations is important for defining the evolutionary forces at equilibrium. We uncovered a small degree of genetic differentiation (FST = 0.010; P-value = 0.463) with a hierarchical clustering into one segment containing members from the southern and northern coastal regions. The data thus support the scenario of little genetic structure in the population of S. guianensis in this geographic area.

Project description:A third species of the rare augochlorine bee genus Chlerogelloides Engel et al. (Halictinae, Augochlorini) is described and figured. Chlerogelloides nexosasp. n. is most similar to the type species, Chlerogelloides femoralis Engel et al., in that both have modified midlegs in the males. The former, however, can be distinguished on the basis of its terminalia, which in some respects more closely resembles those of Chlerogelloides simplex Engel and Brooks. Brief comments on the secondary features of males and relationships of the genus are provided. A key to the species of the genus is provided and floral records of Cordia nodosa Lam. (Boraginaceae) and Gonzalagunia dicocca Cham. & Schltdl. (Rubiaceae) are noted.

Project description:BackgroundDue to the influence of several factors on the hunting of game meat, we investigated how the seasonality of the environment, the abundance, and the biomass of wild animals, as well as the proximity to these resources, can affect the hunting.MethodsThe research was developed with the Fulni-ô people in the municipality of Águas Belas, Agreste of Pernambuco, Northeast of Brazil. In order to do this, we applied snowball sampling to select the participants. Data from potentially useful game species were obtained from lists and semi-structured interviews to register their particular kind of uses, capture periods (daytime, night, or both), preferences, and perceived abundance. The hunters who allowed their game meat captured to be weighed and identified were followed for 1 year.ResultsOur records pointed to a vast repertoire of potentially hunting animals. However, we did not verify relationships between the abundance, seasonality, and biomass of the animals that were hunted by the Fulni-ô. We observed a total of 209,866 (kg) of game meat hunted in the studied group, belonging to 23 species, distributed in three taxonomic groups, the birds being the most representative group with 59% of total reported.ConclusionSuch consumption by the group is well below in terms of biomass when compared to other ethnic or local groups in other regions of Brazil, or in Caatinga areas, characterizing an activity much more of cultural character than subsistence. Also, the use of game meat among the Fulni-ô seems to be actively directed to the preferred species, suggesting that in the case of an urbanized indigenous community, where other sources of income are available, the demand for game meat is lower when compared to other ethnic groups.

Project description:River dolphins are a highly threatened polyphyletic group comprised of four odontocete families: Iniidae, Pontoporiidae, Lipotidae, and Platanistidae, the first two endemic to South America. To address the knowledge gap regarding infectious agents in this cetacean group, we surveyed the presence of herpesviruses by PCR in skin and/or blood samples of live-captured Amazon (Inia geoffrensis, n = 25) and Bolivian (Inia boliviensis, n = 22) river dolphins of the Amazon basin and in selected tissue samples of franciscanas (Pontoporia blainvillei, n = 27) stranded or bycaught in southeastern Brazil. Additionally, available franciscana tissue samples were examined by histopathology. Herpesvirus DNA was amplified in 13 Bolivian river dolphins (59.1%, 95% CI 38.5-79.6%) and 14 franciscanas (51.9%, 95% CI 33.0-70.7%). All Amazon river dolphins were herpesvirus-negative. Two different herpesviruses were found in Bolivian river dolphins: a previously known gammaherpesvirus detected in blood and/or skin samples of all positive individuals and a novel alphaherpesvirus in the skin of one animal. A new gammaherpesvirus was found in several franciscana samples-the first herpesvirus recorded in Pontoporiidae. Intranuclear inclusion bodies consistent with herpesvirus were observed in the lymph node of one franciscana. The high divergence among the obtained herpesviruses and those previously described can be explained by viral-host coevolution, and by the fact that these populations are fairly isolated.

Project description:Roads pose an imminent threat to wildlife directly through mortality and changes in individual behavior, and also indirectly through modification of the amount and configuration of wildlife habitat. However, few studies have addressed how these mechanisms interact to determine species response to roads. We used structural equation modeling to assess direct and indirect effects (via landscape modification) of roads on space use by jaguars in Brazil, using radio-tracking data available from the literature. We fit path models that directly link jaguars' space use to roads and to land cover, and indirectly link jaguars' space use to roads through the same land cover categories. Our findings show that space use by jaguars was not directly affected by roads, but indirect effects occurred through reductions in natural areas on which jaguars depend, and through urban sprawl. Males´ space use, however, was not negatively influenced by urban areas. Since jaguars seem to ignore roads, mitigation should be directed to road fencing and promoting safe crossings. We argue that planners and managers need to much more seriously take into account the deforestation and the unbridled urban expansion from roads to ensure jaguar conservation in Brazil.

Project description:Abstract Poster session 1, September 21, 2022, 12:30 PM - 1:30 PM Introduction Protothecosis is an emergent disease caused by members of the genus Prototheca. Most such infections probably occurred by traumática inoculation into subcutaneous tissues. Objectives It is to report a case of human cutaneous protothecosis identified in the state of Maranhão, northeast Brazil. Case report: 75-year-old patient, Merchant, from the municipality of São Luís Island, Northeastern Brazil. He sought care referring to an erythematous and painful lesion on the left arm that started 6 months before the treatment. On examination, he presented an infiltrative, hyperemic lesion with burning pain throughout the upper limb (Fig. 1). The patient reported that a week before the onset of the condition, he suffered trauma on the arm, with a laceration in the skin, while cleaning a sewage system with clay pipes. During the healing process, he noticed a hyperemic, slightly pruritic lesion measuring 2 cm which did not improve. He sought medical assistance at the dermatological service, who suspected dermatophytosis, initiating treatment with terbinafine (250 mg, once a day), evolving with worsening of the lesion. A lesion biopsy was indicated, to histopathological examination, which showed circular, moniliform structures, diagnosed as protothecosis (Fig. 2). Treatment with itraconazole (200 mg/day) was started, with no therapeutic response and the lesion spread throughout the patient's left upper limb. Submitted to a new investigation with biopsy for direct research and culture for fungi, being identified Prototheca Wicherhamii, by Maldi-Tof®, with sensitivity to itraconazole and ampfotericin B. PCR amplification of the genetic material obtained in the clinical isolate was performed with purification of its product, and sequencing showed genetic similarity of 97,46% with Prototheca Wickerhamii. The sequence obtained was deposited in Genbank under number MZ409514. In the absence of therapeutic response to itraconazole (400 mg/day), and significant worsening of the lesion, with presentation of a secondary infection caused by Staphylococcus haemoliticus, treatment with Clindamycin (900 mg/day for 10 days) and Liposomal Amphotericin B (4 mg/kg/day for 45 days) were performed. After suspension of Liposomal Amphotericin B, the lesions recurred in 15 days, and voriconazole (200 mg 12/12 h) was prescribed for 6 months, with complete regression of the lesions. Currently, he is free of injuries, having been followed up every 6 months. Conclusion Rare disease caused by chlorophyllous algae may be surprising due to the severity and lack of response to antifungals that show sensitivity in vitro.

Project description:The carbon dioxide flux through the air-water interface of coastal estuarine systems must be quantified to understand the regional balance of carbon and its transport through adjacent coastal regions. We estimated and calculated the emissions of carbon dioxide (FCO?) and the partial pressure of CO? (pCO?) values in 28 estuarine environments at a variety of spatial scales in the northern and northeastern regions of Brazil. The results showed a mean FCO? (water to air) of 55 ± 45?mmol·m(-2)·d(-1). Additionally, a negative correlation between dissolved oxygen saturation and pCO? was observed, indicating a control by biological processes and especially by organic matter degradation. This leads to increased dissolved CO? concentration in estuarine waters which results in a pCO? that reached 8,638??atm. Our study suggests that northern and northeastern Brazilian estuaries act as sources of atmospheric CO?. The range of pCO? observed were similar to those found in inner estuaries in other places around the world, with the exception of a few semi-arid estuaries (Köppen climate classification - BSh) in which record low levels of pCO? have been detected.
