Morphological diversity and polymorphism of self-assembling collagen peptides controlled by length of hydrophobic domains.

Project description:Synthetic collagen mimetic peptides are used to probe the role of hydrophobic forces in mediating protein self-assembly. Higher order association is an integral property of natural collagens, which assemble into fibers and meshes that comprise the extracellular matrix of connective tissues. The unique triple-helix fold fully exposes two-thirds of positions in the protein to solvent, providing ample opportunities for engineering interaction sites. Inclusion of just a few hydrophobic groups in a minimal peptide promotes a rich variety of self-assembly behaviors, resulting in hundred-nanometer to micron size nanodiscs and nanofibers. Morphology depends primarily on the length of hydrophobic domains. Peptide discs contain lipophilic domains capable of sequestering small hydrophobic dyes. Combining multiple peptide types result in composite structures of discs and fibers ranging from stars to plates-on-a-string. These systems provide valuable tools to shed insight into the fundamental principles underlying hydrophobicity-driven higher order protein association that will facilitate the design of self-assembling systems in biomaterials and nanomedical applications.

Length-mass allometries of the larvae of aquatic dipterans: differences between taxa, morphological traits, and methods.

Project description:Body mass underpins many ecological processes at the level of individuals, populations, and communities. Often estimated in arthropods from linear morphological traits such as body length or head width, these relationships can vary even between closely related taxa. Length-mass relationships of mosquito (Diptera: Culicidae) larvae are poorly known despite the importance of this family to disease and aquatic ecology. To fill this gap, we measured ontogenetic changes in linear traits (body length, head width, and thorax width) and dry and wet masses and estimated length- and width-mass relationships in larvae of 3 culicid species inhabiting different niches: the tropical Aedes albopictus (Skuse, 1894), the temperate Culex pipiens (Linnaeus, 1758), and the snowmelt Ochlerotatus punctor (Kirby, 1837). We compared our results with published length-mass allometries of other aquatic dipteran larvae. We showed that thorax width and body length, but not head width, reliably predicted body mass for our 3 species. The length-mass allometry slopes in aquatic dipterans varied considerably between and within families but were independent of phylogeny, specimen handling, preservation techniques, and data fitting methods. Slope estimates became less precise with decreasing sample size and size range. To obtain reliable estimates of the allometric slopes, we have thus recommended using data on all larval stages for intraspecific allometries and a wide range of species for interspecific allometries. We also cautioned against the indiscriminate use of length-mass allometries obtained for other taxa or collected at lower taxonomic resolutions, e.g., when using length-mass relationships to estimate biomass production at a given site.

The Effect of Alkyl Chain Length on Well-Defined Fluoro-Arylated Polythiophenes for Temperature-Dependent Morphological Transitions.

Project description:Understanding the relationship between the molecular structure and morphological behaviors of well-defined semiconducting polymers is essential for developing novel conjugated building blocks and determining the origin of the functional characteristics of semiconducting polymers. Here, we provide insights into the significant temperature-dependent morphological transitions of novel well-defined polythiophene derivatives with m-alkoxy-substituted fluoro-aryl side units: poly(3-(4-fluoro-3-(hexyloxy)phenyl)thiophene) (PHFPT) and poly(3-(4-fluoro-3-(dodecyloxy)phenyl)thiophene) (PDFPT). We found that these unique morphological transitions depend on the alkyl chain length of the substituted fluoro-aryl side units. In PHFPT with short alkyl chains, the thermal treatment promotes a crowded interdigitated packing structure, resulting in narrow lamellar spacings in its crystalline structure. In contrast, the long alkyl chain of PDFPT acts as a physical spacer and disturbs the crowded interdigitation. In addition, the thermal treatment induces the backbone planarization and an ordered packing morphology in PDFPT. These demonstrations provide a critical milestone for the phase transitions of semiconducting polymers with conjugated side units.

Testing the morphological constraint hypothesis of tail length in the sexually dimorphic Cerastes vipera and new perspectives.

Project description:The morphological constraint hypothesis (MCH) states that, in snakes, males typically have relatively longer tails than females to accommodate the hemipenes and retractor muscles. To date, most studies testing the MCH have been interspecific and results have been equivocal. We tested the MCH intraspecifically on Cerastes vipera, a species with a relatively short tail and suitable for testing the MCH. The relative tail length and length of the hemipenes pocket in Cerastes vipera were measured in preserved museum-maintained males (n = 35) and in free-ranging males and females (n = 277). Males exhibited relatively longer tails than females, which was explained fully by the length of the hemipenes pocket. The relatively short tail of C. vipera presents a constraint to the reproductive structures in males, as the length of the hemipenes pocket occupies a greater proportion in shorter- than longer-tailed individuals. This is the first report presenting these intraspecific findings in support of the MCH. Whether these relations are widespread among snake families, within Viperidae, or specifically within C. vipera warrants further studies.

Head and dependent marking and dependency length in possessive noun phrases: a typological study of morphological and syntactic complexity.

Project description:The interaction of morphosyntactic features has been of great interest in research on linguistic complexity. In this paper we approach such interactions in possessive noun phrases. First, we study the interaction of head marking and dependent marking in this domain with typological feature data and with multilingual corpus data. The data suggest that there is a clear inverse relationship between head and dependent marking in possessive noun phrases in terms of complexity. The result points to evidence on complexity trade-offs and to productive integration of typological and corpus-based approaches. Second, we explore whether zero versus overt morphological marking as a measure of morphological complexity affects dependency length as a measure of syntactic complexity. Data from multilingual corpora suggest that there is no cross-linguistic trend between these measures in possessive noun phrases.
