In methanotrophic bacteria, methane is oxidized to methanol by the enzyme methane monooxygenase (MMO). The soluble MMO enzyme complex from Methylocystis sp. strain M also oxidizes a wide range of aliphatic and aromatic compounds, including trichloroethylene.
