Project description:ObjectivesTo assess test-retest reliability, internal consistency, construct validity, and the presence of ceiling and floor effects in the Brazilian version of the Short-Form Neck Disability Index (SF-NDI) in patients with chronic neck pain.MethodsOne hundred and fifty-six patients answered the Numerical Pain Rating Scale (NPRS), Short-Form Neck Disability Index (SF-NDI), Tampa Scale of Kinesiophobia (TKS), Pain Catastrophizing Scale (PCS), and the 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey questionnaire (SF-36). Another sample (n = 51) filled the SF-NDI at two different times, and test-retest reliability was measured using the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), standard error of measurement (SEM), and minimum detectable change (MDC). The internal consistency of the SF-NDI was analyzed by Cronbach's alpha. To determine construct validity, Spearman's correlation coefficient was used to determine the magnitude of the correlation between the score of the SF-NDI and other measurement instruments: NPRS, TKS, PCS, SF-36, and original NDI.ResultsSF-NDI presented substantial reliability (ICC = 0.844) and adequate internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha = 0.778). We observed significant values and with a correlation magnitude greater than 0.80 for the SF-NDI with the original NDI, between 0.30 and 0.50 for the correlations with TKS, and the functional capacity and pain domains of the SF-36, and less than 0.30 with the other study instruments. No participant reached the maximum score. Ceiling and floor effects were not observed.ConclusionsSF-NDI with 5 items has adequate measurement properties in Brazilian chronic neck pain patients.

Project description:STUDY DESIGN:Cross-cultural adaptation and psychometric evaluation. OBJECTIVE:The aim of this study was to translate the Neck Disability Index (NDI) into the simplified-Chinese language and to evaluate the reliability, validity, and responsiveness of the new questionnaire. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA:Neck pain is a major health problem resulting in major disability. NDI is the most frequently used scale for self-rating of disability due to neck pain. At present, there is no simplified-Chinese version of the NDI. The aims of this study were to culturally adapt and translate the NDI into the simplified-Chinese language (NDI-SC) and to evaluate its psychometric properties in patients with neck pain. METHODS:The NDI was translated into simplified-Chinese version based on established guidelines. A total of 70 patients participated in this study. Patients were asked to complete a set of questionnaires comprising of their demographic information, the NDI-SC, and a visual analog scale (VAS) of pain. Fifty-six patients returned after 1 to 2 weeks to complete the same set of questionnaires and the global rating of change (GROC) scale. Then, the NDI-SC was evaluated for content validity, construct validity, internal consistency, test-retest reliability, and responsiveness. RESULTS:The NDI-SC demonstrated excellent internal consistency (Cronbach ??=?0.92) and good test-retest reliability (ICC2,1?=?0.85). Content validity was confirmed as no floor or ceiling effects were detected for the NDI-SC total score. Construct validity was established with factor analysis revealing two-factor subscales explaining 66% of the variance. The NDI-SC showed a strong correlation with VAS (Rp?=?0.61, P?<?0.001) and a moderate correlation with GROC (Rs?=?0.46, P?<?0.001). The correlation between NDI-SC change scores and VAS change scores was also moderate (Rp?=?0.59, P?<?0.001). CONCLUSION:The results showed that the NDI-SC is a reliable, valid, and responsive instrument to measure functional limitations in patients with neck pain. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE:3.

Project description:BackgroundA brief measure of dispositional mindfulness is important for applied research on mindfulness. Although short forms of the Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ), which measures the five aspects of mindfulness (i.e., observing, describing, acting with awareness, non-judging, and non-reactivity), have been developed worldwide, the validity and reliability of the Japanese version has not been examined. This study aims to examine the validity and reliability of the 24-item and 15-item versions of the FFMQ in Japan, which are the most widely used versions worldwide.MethodsOnline surveys were conducted for 889 adults in Japan through an online survey company using self-reported questionnaires including the FFMQ to confirm the factor structure and validity. To examine construct validity, we examined the relationship between the short form of FFMQ and mind wandering, interoceptive awareness, experiential avoidance, cognitive fusion, openness, neuroticism, self-compassion, depression, and anxiety, which have been theoretically or empirically shown to be related to mindfulness. In addition, 137 adults responded to the FFMQ again, after four weeks, for the test-retest reliability.ResultsThe correlated five-factor and four-factor (excluding observing) models and the higher-order factor hierarchical model did not show sufficient goodness of fit, while the 24-item version showed acceptable fit when uncorrelated method factors loaded on by the positive and negative (reverse-scored) items were added. However, the 15-item version did not show acceptable fits for any of the models. Regarding reliability, the 24-item version showed acceptable values. In terms of the relationship between the original and the shortened version of the FFMQ, the 24-item version shared approximately 80% of the variance with the original one. In addition, although the wording effects of positive and negative items seemed to affect the correlations between the FFMQ and the other scales, the associations with related concepts were as predicted generally, supporting the construct validity of the short form of the FFMQ.ConclusionIn Japan, the 24-item version of FFMQ showed acceptable validity and reliability similar to the original version, and we recommend that the 24-item version be used.

Project description:OBJECTIVES:The Short Form 36 (SF-36) questionnaire is increasingly being used to measure health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in Indonesia. However, evidence that it is valid for use in Indonesian adults is lacking. This study assessed the validity and reliability of the SF-36 in Indonesian middle-aged and older adults. METHODS:Adults aged 46-81 years (n=206) in Yogyakarta, Indonesia completed the SF-36, another measure of HRQoL (the EuroQoL visual analogue scale [EQ-VAS]), and measures assessing their demographic characteristics. Fifty-four percent (n=121) completed the SF-36 measure again 1 week later. Confirmatory factor analysis was conducted to confirm the factor structure of the SF-36. Internal consistency reliability was estimated using Cronbach's alpha, and test-retest reliability was assessed using intraclass correlations. Convergent and discriminant validity were assessed by computing correlations among SF-36 subscales, between subscales and the 2 component scores, and between component scores and EQ-VAS scores. RESULTS:Most scaling assumptions were met. The hypothetical factor structure fit the data poorly (root mean square error of approximation [RMSEA]=0.108) and modification was required for a good fit (RMSEA=0.060). Scores on all subscales demonstrated acceptable internal consistency (?>0.70) and test-retest reliability (r>0.70). Divergent validity was supported by weak to moderate interscale correlations (r=0.19 to 0.64). As expected, the 2 summary scores were moderately to strongly correlated with the EQ-VAS (r>0.60). CONCLUSIONS:The findings adequately support the use of SF-36 in Indonesian middle-aged and older adults, although the optimal algorithm for computing component scores in Indonesia warrants further investigation.

Project description:Moral expansiveness refers to the range of entities (human and non-human) deemed worthy of moral concern and treatment. Previous research has established that the Moral Expansiveness Scale (MES) is a powerful predictor of altruistic moral decision-making and captures a unique dimension of moral cognition. However, the length of the full MES may be restrictive for some researchers. Here we establish the reliability and validity of a reduced moral expansiveness scale, the MESx. Consistent with the full version, the MESx is strongly associated with (but not reducible to) theoretically related constructs, such as endorsement of universalism values, identification with all humanity, and connectedness to nature. The MESx also predicted measures of altruistic moral decision-making to the same degree as the full MES. Further, the MESx passed tests of discriminant validity, was unrelated to political conservatism (unlike the full MES), only mildly associated with the tendency to provide socially desirable responses, and produced moderate reliability over time. We conclude that the MESx is a psychometrically valid alternative for researchers requiring a short measure of moral expansiveness.

Project description:This study evaluated the reliability and validity of a Japanese version of Pain Disability Index (PDI). Analyses were conducted on a 7-item version (PDI-J) and a 5-item (PDI-5-J version of the PDI). Using a web-based survey system, we recruited 300 individuals with chronic low back pain (lasting ≥3 months) and 300 individuals with chronic daily headache (lasting ≥15 days per month for 3 months) aged 20-64 years. Analyses revealed a one-factor with goodness-of-fit indices assessed by confirmatory factor analysis. For concurrent validity, we calculated Pearson's correlation coefficients among the PDI-J, PDI-5-J, Pain Disability Assessment Scale, Pain numerical rating scale, and revised version of Short-Form McGill Pain Questionnaire. Internal consistency was evaluated by Cronbach's α, and test-retest reliability was assessed with intraclass correlations (ICCs) in 100 of 600 participants a week after the first response. Both Japanese adaptations of the PDI demonstrated good concurrent validity and reliability (Cronbach's α was 0.89 for PDI-J in chronic low back pain or chronic daily headache, and 0.94 and 0.93 for PDI-5-J in chronic low back pain and chronic daily headache, respectively). The PDI-J and PDI-5-J showed were highly correlated (r = 0.98). ICCs were 0.67 and 0.59 for the PDI-J and 0.59 and 0.63 for the PDI-5-J in chronic low back pain and chronic daily headache, respectively. In conclusion, these two PDI versions can be potentially used for evaluating pain-related interference with daily activities among the Japanese general population.

Project description:BackgroundOswestry Disability Index (ODI) is broadly used in clinical and research settings for assessing the disability level in patients with lumbar radiculopathy but it has not been translated into Urdu language according to the pre-established translation guidelines as well as the validity and reliability of ODI Urdu version has not been tested yet. The aim of this study was to translate ODI in native Urdu language (ODI-U) according to recommended guidelines and to measure its psychometric properties in Urdu speaking patients suffering from lumber radiculopathy.MethodsOut of 108 participants, 54 were healthy (who filled ODI-U) and 54 were patients of lumber radiculopathy. The patients were administered through ODI-U, visual analogue scales for disability (VAS disability), pain intensity (VAS pain) and SF-36 at baseline and after 3 days. Reliability was investigated through test-retest method, internal consistency, standard error of measurement (SEM) and smallest detectable change (SDC). ODI-U was assessed for exploratory factor analysis, construct (convergent and discriminative) validity and content validity. Alpha level < 0.05 was considered statistically significant and psychometric standards were evaluated contrary to priori hypothesis.ResultsODI-U revealed excellent test-retest reliability for total score (ICC2,1 = 0.95) and for all item (ICC2,1 = 0.72-0.98). Cronbach's alpha of 0.89 showed excellent internal consistency and moderate correlation between ODI-U total score and each item through spearman's correlation coefficient (r = 0.51-0.76). One factor structure was created, explaining 52.5% variance. There was no floor and ceiling effect of total ODI-U score. Content validity was assessed through conducting interviews with patients and incorporating expert's opinions. The discriminative validity was measured by independent sample t-test, where significant difference between healthy and patients (P < 0.001) was observed. The convergent validity was evaluated through Pearson's correlation showing moderate positive correlation of ODI-U with VAS pain (r = 0.49) and VAS disability (r = 0.51) but moderate negative correlation with all SF-36 domains (r = - 0.43to - 0.63).ConclusionODI-U showed adequate psychometric properties. ODI-U was found to be a reliable and a valid tool to measure the level of disability in Urdu-speaking patients with lumber radiculopathy.

Project description:Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) are useful for understanding the health needs and outcomes of the general public. We aim to develop a burn-specific metric-Adult Burn Outcome Questionnaire (ABOQ)-that is brief and can be administered electronically to all burn survivors over the age of 18. The 14-item ABOQ was developed from the already validated Young Adult Burn Outcome Questionnaire (YABOQ) long form. The ABOQ questionnaire, along with Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement System-10 (PROMIS-10), was administered to 120 outpatient burn survivors at three hospitals. Clinical validity of the ABOQ was measured by testing associations between ABOQ items and burn size, the PROMIS-10 generic items and composite scales using correlational analysis including multivariate canonical analysis. Nine out of 14 ABOQ items were significantly correlated with burn size (correlations ranging from -0.25 to -0.46, P < .01). The canonical correlation between ABOQ and burn size was 0.68 (P = .0002). The overall canonical correlation between two instruments was also significant (P < .0001). At the item level, at least 25% of the variation in each of the five ABOQ items could be explained by PROMIS-10 items and composite scores, while six other items could only be accounted for by less than 15% of the variation. ABOQ short form assessment can be used to efficiently measure burn outcomes across a range of relevant clinical domains with credible validity. A large proportion of the variation in ABOQ scores was not accounted for by PROMIS-10, suggesting that ABOQ provided additional health-related information specifically for the burn population beyond the generic instrument.

Project description:Families strongly influence the health of communities and individuals across the life course, but no validated measure of family health exists. The absence of such a measure has limited the examination of family health trends and the intersection of family health with individual and community health. The purpose of this study was to examine the reliability and validity of the Family Health Scale (FHS), creating a multi-factor long-form and a uniform short-form. The primary sample included 1,050 adults recruited from a national quota sample Qualtrics panel. Mplus version 7 was used to analyze the data using a structural equation modeling framework. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) confirmed a 32-item, 4-factor long-form scale. The four factors included (1) family social and emotional health processes; (2) family healthy lifestyle; (3) family health resources; and (4) family external social supports. A 10-item short-form of the FHS was also validated in the initial sample and a second sample of 401 adults. Both the long-form and short-form FHS correlated in the expected direction with validated measures of family functioning and healthy lifestyle. A preliminary assessment of clinical cutoffs in the short-form were correlated with depression risk. The FHS offers the potential to assess family health trends and to develop accessible, de-identified databases on the well-being of families. Important next steps include validating the scale among multiple family members and collecting longitudinal data.

Project description:ObjectiveTo compare the Short Musculoskeletal Function Assessment Dysfunction Index (SMFA DI) and the Short Form-36 Physical Component Summary (SF-36 PCS) scores among patients undergoing operative management of tibial fractures.Study design and settingBetween July 2000 and September 2005, we enrolled 1,319 skeletally mature patients with open or closed fractures of the tibial shaft that were managed with intramedullary nailing. Patients were asked to complete the SMFA Questionnaire and SF-36 at discharge and 3, 6, and 12 months post-surgical fixation.ResultsThe SMFA DI and SF-36 PCS scores were highly correlated at 3, 6, and 12 months post-surgical fixation. The difference in the mean standardized change scores for SMFA DI and SF-36 PCS, from 3 to 12 months post-surgical fixation, was not statistically significant. Both the SMFA DI and SF-36 PCS scores were able to discriminate between healed and nonhealed tibial fractures at 3, 6, and 12 months postsurgery.ConclusionIn patients with tibial-shaft fractures, the SMFA DI offered no significant advantages over the SF-36 PCS score. These results, along with the usefulness of SF-36 for comparing populations, recommend the SF-36 for assessing physical function in studies of patients with tibial fractures.
