ABSTRACT: In the title compound, C(12)H(16)O(2), the plane of the carboxylic acid group is almost perpendicular to the benzene ring [dihedral angle 80.9?(3)°] and the tert-butyl unit is disordered over two sets of sites in a 0.503?(6):0.497?(6) ratio. In the crystal structure, centrosymmetric dimers arise from pairs of O-H?O hydrogen bonds involving the carboxylic acid groups.

Project description:The title compound, C12H23NO2·0.5H2O, crystallized with two 2-(1-amino-4-tert-butylcyclohexyl)acetic acid mol-ecules, which are present as zwitterions, and one water mol-ecule in the asymmetric unit. The mol-ecular structure of each zwitterion is stabilized by an intra-molecular six-membered (C 6 ) N-H?O hydrogen bond. In the crystal, the two independent zwitterions are linked head-to-head by N-H?O hydrogen bonds. Further O-H?O and N-H?O hydrogen bonds link the zwitterions and the water molecules, forming sandwich-like layers, with a hydrophilic filling and a hydrophobic exterior, lying parallel to the ab plane.

Reactivities of substituted ?-phenyl-N-tert-butyl nitrones.

Project description:In this work, a series of ?-phenyl-N-tert-butyl nitrones bearing one, two, or three substituents on the tert-butyl group was synthesized. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) was used to investigate their electrochemical properties and showed a more pronounced substituent effect for oxidation than for reduction. Rate constants of superoxide radical (O2(•-)) reactions with nitrones were determined using a UV-vis stopped-flow method, and phenyl radical (Ph(•)) trapping rate constants were measured by EPR spectroscopy. The effect of N-tert-butyl substitution on the charge density and electron density localization of the nitronyl carbon as well as on the free energies of nitrone reactivity with O2(•-) and HO2(•) were computationally rationalized at the PCM/B3LYP/6-31+G**//B3LYP/6-31G* level of theory. Theoretical and experimental data showed that the rates of the reaction correlate with the nitronyl carbon charge density, suggesting a nucleophilic nature of O2(•-) and Ph(•) addition to the nitronyl carbon atom. Finally, the substituent effect was investigated in cell cultures exposed to hydrogen peroxide and a correlation between the cell viability and the oxidation potential of the nitrones was observed. Through a combination of computational methodologies and experimental methods, new insights into the reactivity of free radicals with nitrone derivatives have been proposed.

Project description:In the title mol-ecule, C(17)H(23)N(2)O(2)P, the P atom has a distorted tetra-hedral environment. The P-N bond to the tolyl-amido fragment is 1.642?(4)?Å while that to the butyl-amido fragment is 1.629?(3)?Å. The dihedral angle between the two benzene rings is 82.3?(2)°. In the crystal, adjacent mol-ecules are linked via weak N-H?(O)P and N-H?N hydrogen-bonding inter-actions into an extended chain parallel to the b axis. The three methyl groups of the tert-butyl-amido substituent are disordered over two sets of sites with equal occupancies. The crystal studied was found to be a non-merohedral twin with the minor twin component = 23.1?(1)%.

Phenyl 3,5-di-tert-butyl-2-hy-droxy-benzoate.

Project description:The title mol-ecule, C(21)H(26)O(3), has a six-membered planar carbon ring as the central core, substituted at position 1 with phen-oxy-carbonyl, at position 2 with hy-droxy and at positions 3 and 5 with tert-butyl groups. The structure shows two independent but very similar mol-ecules within the asymmetric unit. For both independent mol-ecules, the ester carboxyl-ate group is coplanar with the central core, as reflected by the small C-C-O-C torsion angles [179.95?(17) and 173.70?(17)°]. In contrast, the phenyl substituent is almost perpendicular to the carboxyl-ate -CO(2) fragment, as reflected by C-O-C-C torsion angles, ranging from 74 to 80°. The coplanarity between the central aromatic ring and the ester carboxyl-ate -CO(2)- group allows the formation of an intra-molecular hydrogen bond, with O?O distances of 2.563?(2) and 2.604?(2)?Å.

Aromatic SNF-Approach to Fluorinated Phenyl tert-Butyl Nitroxides.

Project description:The interaction of octafluorotoluene (1a), as well as pentafluorobenzonitrile (1b) with tert-butylamine, followed by the oxidation of thus formed tert-butylanilines (2a,b) with meta-chloroperoxybenzoic acid led to functionalized perfluorinated phenyl tert-butyl nitroxides [namely, 4-(N-tert-butyl(oxyl)amino)heptafluorotoluene (3a) and 4-(N-tert-butyl(oxyl)amino)tetrafluorobenzonitrile (3b)] with nearly quantitative total yields. The molecular and crystal structures of nitroxide 3a were proved by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The radical nature of both nitroxides was confirmed by ESR data. The interaction of Cu(hfac)2 with the obtained nitroxides 3a,b gave corresponding trans-bis(1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoropentane-2,4-dionato-?2O,O')bis{4-(N-tert-butyl(oxyl)amino)perfluoroarene-?O}copper (II) complexes ([Cu(hfac)2(3a)2] and [Cu(hfac)2(3b)2]). X-ray crystal structure analysis showed square bipyramid coordination of a centrally symmetric Cu polyhedron with the axial positions occupied by oxygen atoms of the nitroxide groups. Magnetic measurements revealed intramolecular ferromagnetic exchange interactions between unpaired electrons of Cu(II) ions and paramagnetic ligands, with exchange interaction parameters JCu-R reaching 53 cm-1.

Project description:The title compound, C(18)H(30)N(4)O(2), contains two tert-butyl urea groups, each connected to a benzene ring though a methyl-ene group. One of the groups occupies a position almost normal to the aromatic plane with a C-N-C-C torsion angle of -94.4?(4)°, while the other is considerably twisted from the ring with a C-N-C-C torsion angle of -136.1?(4)°. In the crystal, pairs of mol-ecules are connected to each other, forming centrosymmetric dimers in which two NH groups of one mol-ecule act as hydrogen-bond donors to one carbonyl O atom of the other mol-ecule. The dimers are linked into sheets parallel to (100) by N-H?O hydrogen bonds involving the remaining N-H and C=O groups.
