2,2'-(3,5-Dinitro-benzyl-imino)diethanol.

ABSTRACT: The title compound, C(11)H(15)N(3)O(6), was prepared by the reaction of (3,5-dinitro-benz-yl)methane-sulfonate with diethanol-amine. The asymmetric unit contains four crystallographically independent mol-ecules which differ primarily in their rotation about the bond between the aromatic ring and the N-diethanol unit. The mol-ecules are linked into sheets by a hydrogen-bonding network which involves all of the hydroxy groups, with only van der Waals contacts between the sheets.

The Rb(+) cation is nine-coordinated by O atoms from four 3,5-dinitro-benzoate anions and three neutral 3,5-dinitro-benzoic acid ligands. The metal atom is firstly linked by four bridging carboxyl groups, forming a binuclear motif, which is further linked by the nitro groups into a two-dimensional framework along the [110] direction. A short O-H?O hydrogen bond between two adjacent carboxy/carboxylate groups occurs.

Project description:The title complex, [Cu(C(7)H(3)N(2)O(6))(2)(C(10)H(8)N(2))(H(2)O)]·C(4)H(8)O, features a penta-coordinate Cu(II) atom bound by two monodentate carboxyl-ate ligands, a bidentate 2,2'-bipyridine mol-ecule [dihedral angle between pyridine rings = 5.0 (2)°] and a water mol-ecule. The resulting N(2)O(3) donor set defines a distorted square-pyramidal geometry with the coordinated water mol-ecule in the apical position. In the crystal, the presence of O-H(w)⋯O(c) (w = water and c = carbon-yl) hydrogen bonding leads to the formation of a supra-molecular chain propagating along the c axis, which associates into a double chain via C-H⋯ O and π-π contacts between pyridyl rings [centroid-centroid distance = 3.527 (3) Å]. The solvent mol-ecules, which are disordered over two orientations in a 0.678 (11):0.322 (11) ratio, occupy voids defined by the complex mol-ecules and are held in place via C-H⋯O inter-actions.

The N-H?O hydrogen bonds are bifurcated at the H atom and connect the cinnarizinium and 3,5-dinitro-salicylate ions together. Inter-molecular C-H?O hydrogen bonds connect the components into layers perpendicular to the crystallographic a axis.

Both H atoms of the hy-droxy groups are involved in inter-molecular O-H?O hydrogen bonding. In the crystal structure, this hydrogen bonding assembles mol-ecules into chains of 2(1) symmetry extending parallel to the b axis. The almost planar (within 0.09 and 0.06?Å) 4-CH(3)O-C(6)H(4)-CH=N-C(6)H(4)- groups are oriented outwards the twofold screw axis.
