Tetra-kis(1-ethyl-3-methyl-imidazolium) ?-hexa-cosa-oxidoocta-molybdate.

ABSTRACT: The title compound, (C(6)H(11)N(2))(4)[Mo(8)O(26)] or (emim)(4)[?-Mo(8)O(26)] (emim is 1-ethyl-3-methyl-imidazolium), was obtained from the ionic liquid [emim]BF(4). The asymmetric unit contains two [emim](+) cations and one-half of the [?-Mo(8)O(26)](4-) tetra-anion, which occupies a special position on an inversion centre. The ?-[Mo(8)O(26)](4-) tetra-anion features eight distorted MoO(6) coordination octa-hedra linked together through bridging O atoms.

Project description:In the title salt, [Eu(C3H7NO)8][PMo12O40], the asymmetric unit comprises one α-Keggin-type [PMo12O40](3-) polyoxidometalate anion and one distorted dodeca-hedral [Eu(C3H7NO)8](3+) complex cation. In the crystal, the isolated polyoxidometalate anions are packed into hexa-gonally arranged rows extending parallel to [001]. The complex cations are situated between the rows and are linked to the neighbouring anions through weak C-H⋯O hydrogen-bonding inter-actions, leading to the formation of a three-dimensional network structure.

The complete octa-molbydate unit is generated by crystallographic inversion symmetry. The polyhedral connectivity leads to [100] chains in the crystal and N-H⋯O and N-H⋯(O,O) hydrogen bonds help to consolidate the packing.

The additional alkyl bridges significantly rigidify the structure and enforce a 'bowl' shape on the mol-ecular cavity. In the crystal structure, the mol-ecule lies on a crystallographic mirror plane, and a single ethyl acetate mol-ecule (also lying on the mirror plane) is present within the compound cavity, illustrating the host capabilities of the mol-ecule.

Both the cation and the anion reside on special positions, the Re atom on a crystallographic center of inversion and the P atom on a C(2) axis parallel to the b axis. The Re(V) atom in the cation exhibits an octa-hedral coordination geometry with two O atoms in the apical positions and four N atoms of the 4-Mepy ligands in the equatorial plane. The Re=O and Re-N bond lengths fall in the typical ranges of trans-dioxidorhenium(V) complexes.
