ABSTRACT: The asymmetric unit of the title compound, C(17)H(16)OS, contains two crystallographically independent mol-ecules, one of which is nearly planar, the outer rings making dihedral angles of 1.51?(3) and 1.09?(3)° with the central ring. In the crystal structure, weak inter-molecular C-H?O hydrogen bonds link mol-ecules into chains parallel to the a axis. ?-? Contacts between the thioxanthone rings [centroid-centroid distances = 3.798?(3) and 3.781?(3)?Å] may further stabilize the structure.

The ethanol group is disordered over two of the 'arms' of the cation in a statistical ratio. In the crystal, [010] chains of anions occur, linked by N-H⋯O and O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds, which generate R 2 (2)(8) loops. Further N-H⋯O and O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds link the components into a three-dimensional network. One of the water O atoms lies near an inversion centre and is 50% occupied.

Within the chains, adjacent inversion-related anionic barbiturate entities are joined through R2(2)(8) ring motifs. The cations are linked to the chains via N-H?O hydrogen bonds. The chains are linked via a number of C-H?O inter-actions, forming a three-dimensional structure.
