Europium-doped barium bromide iodide.

ABSTRACT: Single crystals of Ba(0.96)Eu(0.04)BrI (barium europium bromide iodide) were grown by the Bridgman technique. The title compound adopts the ordered PbCl(2) structure [Braekken (1932 ?). Z. Kristallogr.83, 222-282]. All atoms occupy the fourfold special positions (4c, site symmetry m) of the space group Pnma with a statistical distribution of Ba and Eu. They lie on the mirror planes, perpendicular to the b axis at y = ±0.25. Each cation is coordinated by nine anions in a tricapped trigonal prismatic arrangement.

Project description:The structure of the title compound, barium lanthanum bromide (11/4/34), can be derived from the fluorite structure. The asymmetric unit contains two Ba sites (one with site symmetry 4/m..), one La site (site symmetry 4..), one mixed-occupied Ba and La site (ratio 1:1, site symmetry m..) and six Br sites (one with site symmetry \=4.., one with 2.., one with m.., the latter being disordered over two positions with a 0.86:0.14 ratio). The fundamental building units of the structure are edge-sharing polyhedral clusters made up of Ba and La bromide clusters inter-connected to BaBr(8) square prisms and BaBr(10) groups.

Europium-Doped Ceria Nanowires as Anode for Solid Oxide Fuel Cells.

Project description:CeO2-based materials have been studied intensively as anodes for intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells (IT-SOFCs). In this work, pristine and europium (Eu)-doped CeO2 nanowires were comprehensively investigated as anode materials for IT-SOFCs, by a combination of theoretical predictions and experimental characterizations. The results demonstrate: (1) Oxygen vacancies can be energetically favorably introduced into the CeO2 lattice by Eu doping; (2) The lattice parameter of the ceria increases linearly with the Eu content when it varies from 0 to 35 mol.%, simultaneously resulting in a significant increase in oxygen vacancies. The concentration of oxygen vacancies reaches its maximum at a ca. 10 mol.% Eu doping level and decreases thereafter; (3) The highest oxygen ion conductivity is achieved at a Eu content of 15 mol.%; while the 10 mol.% Eu-doped CeO2 sample displays the highest catalytic activity for H2-TPR and CO oxidization reactions. The conducting and catalytic properties benefit from the expanded lattice, the large amount of oxygen vacancies, the enhanced reactivity of surface oxygen and the promoted mobility of bulk oxygen ions. These results provide an avenue toward designing and optimizing CeO2 as a promising anode for SOFCs.

Divalent europium-doped near-infrared-emitting phosphor for light-emitting diodes.

Project description:Near-infrared luminescent materials exhibit unique photophysical properties that make them crucial components in photonic, optoelectronic and biological applications. As broadband near infrared phosphors activated by transition metal elements are already widely reported, there is a challenge for next-generation materials discovery by introducing rare earth activators with 4f-5d transition. Here, we report an unprecedented phosphor K3LuSi2O7:Eu2+ that gives an emission band centered at 740 nm with a full-width at half maximum of 160 nm upon 460 nm blue light excitation. Combined structural and spectral characterizations reveal a selective site occupation of divalent europium in LuO6 and K2O6 polyhedrons with small coordination numbers, leading to the unexpected near infrared emission. The fabricated phosphor-converted light-emitting diodes have great potential as a non-visible light source. Our work provides the design principle of near infrared emission in divalent europium-doped inorganic solid-state materials and could inspire future studies to further explore near-infrared light-emitting diodes.

Photodissociation of Sodium Iodide Clusters Doped with Small Hydrocarbons.

Project description:Marine aerosols consist of a variety of compounds and play an important role in many atmospheric processes. In the present study, sodium iodide clusters with their simple isotope pattern serve as model systems for laboratory studies to investigate the role of iodide in the photochemical processing of sea-salt aerosols. Salt clusters doped with camphor, formate and pyruvate are studied in a Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometer (FT-ICR MS) coupled to a tunable laser system in both UV and IR range. The analysis is supported by ab initio calculations of absorption spectra and energetics of dissociative channels. We provide quantitative analysis of IRMPD measurements by reconstructing one-photon spectra and comparing them with the calculated ones. While neutral camphor is adsorbed on the cluster surface, the formate and pyruvate ions replace an iodide ion. The photodissociation spectra revealed several wavelength-specific fragmentation pathways, including the carbon dioxide radical anion formed by photolysis of pyruvate. Camphor and pyruvate doped clusters absorb in the spectral region above 290?nm, which is relevant for tropospheric photochemistry, leading to internal conversion followed by intramolecular vibrational redistribution, which leads to decomposition of the cluster. Potential photodissociation products of pyruvate in the actinic region may be formed with a cross section of <2×10-20 ?cm2 , determined by the experimental noise level.

The DNA intercalators ethidium bromide and propidium iodide also bind to core histones.

Project description:Eukaryotic DNA is compacted in the form of chromatin, in a complex with histones and other non-histone proteins. The intimate association of DNA and histones in chromatin raises the possibility that DNA-interactive small molecules may bind to chromatin-associated proteins such as histones. Employing biophysical and biochemical techniques we have characterized the interaction of a classical intercalator, ethidium bromide (EB) and its structural analogue propidium iodide (PI) with hierarchical genomic components: long chromatin, chromatosome, core octamer and chromosomal DNA. Our studies show that EB and PI affect both chromatin structure and function, inducing chromatin compaction and disruption of the integrity of the chromatosome. Calorimetric studies and fluorescence measurements of the ligands demonstrated and characterized the association of these ligands with core histones and the intact octamer in absence of DNA. The ligands affect acetylation of histone H3 at lysine 9 and acetylation of histone H4 at lysine 5 and lysine 8 ex vivo. PI alters the post-translational modifications to a greater extent than EB. This is the first report showing the dual binding (chromosomal DNA and core histones) property of a classical intercalator, EB, and its longer analogue, PI, in the context of chromatin.

Impact of sporicidal fumigation with methyl bromide or methyl iodide on electronic equipment.

Project description:The effect of sporicidal fumigation with methyl bromide or methyl iodide on the functionality of valuable electronic equipment was evaluated using desktop computers as surrogates under target conditions of 200-250 mg/L fumigant for 48 h at 24-30 °C and 75-85% RH. Methyl iodide fumigation damaged light-emitting diodes and optical films in computer displays that were powered-on during fumigation. After five months of post-fumigation operation, five out of six methyl-bromide-fumigated and all six methyl-iodide-fumigated DVD ± RW optical drives failed. Deterioration of rubber spacers critical to maintaining correct disc geometry caused the failure. Metal coupons, included to measure corrosion, showed no significant differences in weight gain between control and fumigation conditions. Relative humidity sensors exhibited a substantial and sometimes irreversible reduction in sensitivity during and after methyl iodide fumigation. Methyl bromide and methyl iodide can cause damage to electronic equipment, but damage seems to be limited to organic materials rather than corrosion of metal surfaces.

Correlation between phase compatibility and efficient energy conversion in Zr-doped Barium Titanate.

Project description:Recent demonstrations of both heat-to-electricity energy conversion devices and electrocaloric devices based on first-order ferroelectric phase transformations identify the lowering of hysteresis and cyclic reversibility of the transformation as enabling criteria for the advancement of this technology. These demonstrations, and recent studies of the hysteresis of phase transformations in oxides, show that satisfying conditions of supercompatibility can be useful for lowering hysteresis, but with limitations for systems with only a few variants of the lower symmetry phase. In particular, it is widely accepted that in a classic cubic-to-tetragonal phase transformation, with only three tetragonal variants having only six twin systems, tuning for improved crystallographic compatibility will be of limited value. This work shows that, on the contrary, the tuning of lattice parameters in Ba(Ti1-xZrx)O3 for improved crystallographic compatibility, even at low doping levels of Zr (x ≤ 0.027), give significant improvement of transformation and ferroelectric energy conversion properties. Specifically, the transformation hysteresis is lowered by 25%, and the maximum value of the polarization/temperature ratio dP/dT at the phase transformation is increased by 10%.

Structural properties of fluorozirconate-based glass ceramics doped with multivalent europium.

Project description:The structure/property relationships of fluorochlorozirconate glass ceramics as a function of divalent and trivalent europium (Eu) co-doping and thermal processing have been investigated; the influence of doping ratio on the formation of barium chloride (BaCl(2)) nanocrystals therein was elucidated. X-ray absorption near-edge structure spectroscopy shows that the post-thermal annealing changes the Eu valence of the as-poured glass slightly, but during the melting process Eu(3+) is more strongly reduced to Eu(2+), in particular, when doped as a chloride instead of fluoride compound. The Eu(2+)-to-Eu(3+) doping ratio also plays a significant role in chemical equilibrium in the melt. X-ray diffraction measurements indicate that a higher Eu(2+) fraction leads to a BaCl(2) phase transition from hexagonal to orthorhombic structure at a lower temperature.

Crystalline Structure, Defect Chemistry and Room Temperature Colossal Permittivity of Nd-doped Barium Titanate.

Project description:Dielectric materials with high permittivity are strongly demanded for various technological applications. While polarization inherently exists in ferroelectric barium titanate (BaTiO3), its high permittivity can only be achieved by chemical and/or structural modification. Here, we report the room-temperature colossal permittivity (~760,000) obtained in xNd: BaTiO3 (x?=?0.5?mol%) ceramics derived from the counterpart nanoparticles followed by conventional pressureless sintering process. Through the systematic analysis of chemical composition, crystalline structure and defect chemistry, the substitution mechanism involving the occupation of Nd3+ in Ba2+ -site associated with the generation of Ba vacancies and oxygen vacancies for charge compensation has been firstly demonstrated. The present study serves as a precedent and fundamental step toward further improvement of the permittivity of BaTiO3-based ceramics.

High Performance, Low Temperature Solution-Processed Barium and Strontium Doped Oxide Thin Film Transistors.

Project description:Amorphous mixed metal oxides are emerging as high performance semiconductors for thin film transistor (TFT) applications, with indium gallium zinc oxide, InGaZnO (IGZO), being one of the most widely studied and best performing systems. Here, we investigate alkaline earth (barium or strontium) doped InBa(Sr)ZnO as alternative, semiconducting channel layers and compare their performance of the electrical stress stability with IGZO. In films fabricated by solution-processing from metal alkoxide precursors and annealed to 450 °C we achieve high field-effect electron mobility up to 26 cm2 V-1 s-1. We show that it is possible to solution-process these materials at low process temperature (225-200 °C yielding mobilities up to 4.4 cm2 V-1 s-1) and demonstrate a facile "ink-on-demand" process for these materials which utilizes the alcoholysis reaction of alkyl metal precursors to negate the need for complex synthesis and purification protocols. Electrical bias stress measurements which can serve as a figure of merit for performance stability for a TFT device reveal Sr- and Ba-doped semiconductors to exhibit enhanced electrical stability and reduced threshold voltage shift compared to IGZO irrespective of the process temperature and preparation method. This enhancement in stability can be attributed to the higher Gibbs energy of oxidation of barium and strontium compared to gallium.
