ABSTRACT: In the title compound, C(9)H(8)N(2)O(4), the indolin-2-one ring system is substanti-ally planar [maximum deviation = 0.0353?(15)?Å]. In the crystal structure, inter-molecular N-H?O and O-H?O hydrogen bonds are responsible for the formation of a three-dimensional network.

The mol-ecules are planar (r.m.s. deviation of the asymmetric unit is 0.0248?Å, whereas that of the dimer is 0.0360?Å) and they are dimerized due to inter-molecular O-H?O hydrogen bonds. The dimers are connected to each other through hydrogen bonds involving the CH(3) group and the hydr-oxy O atom. The hydr-oxy group is involved in bifurcated hydrogen bonds. The first is an intra-molecular O-H?O hydrogen bond, involving the ester carbonyl O atom, which gives rise to the formation of a boat-like hydrogen-bonded chelate ring. The second is an inter-molecular O-H?N hydrogen bond involving the first N atom of the azide group of a symmetry-related mol-ecule. In the crystal structure this leads to the formation of a polmer chain extending in the c-axis direction.

The dimers are connected by further N-H?O links and weak C-H?O inter-actions, resulting in a layered motif.
