Catena-Poly[tris-(?(2)-1H-benzimidazole-5-carboxyl-ato)europium(III)].

ABSTRACT: In the title one-dimensional coordination polymer, [Eu(C(8)H(5)N(2)O(2))(3)](n), the Eu(III) ion is eight-coordinated by the carboxyl-ate O atoms of six ligands in a distorted monocapped penta-gonal-bipyramidal geometry. The ligands link Eu(III) ions, forming helical chains parallel to the c axis, with Eu?Eu separations of 4.0678?(11)?Å. The chains are further inter-connected by N-H?N hydrogen bonds into a three-dimensional supra-molecular network. The crystal studied was a racemic twin, as suggested by the Flack parameter of 0.367?(14).

Project description:The asymmetric unit of the title compound, [Ag(3)Yb(C(5)HN(2)O(4))(2)(H(2)O)(2)](n), contains three Ag(I) ions, one Yb(III) ion, two imidazole-4,5-dicarboxyl-ate ligands and two coordinating water mol-ecules. The Yb(III) atom is eight-coordinated, in a bicapped trigonal prismatic coordination geometry, by six O atoms from three imidazole-4,5-dicarboxyl-ate ligands and two coordinating water mol-ecules. The two-coordinated Ag(I) ions exhibit three types of coordination environments. One Ag(I) atom is bonded to two N atoms from two different imidazole-4,5-dicarboxyl-ate ligands. The other two Ag(I) atoms are each coordinated by one O atom and one N atom from two different imidazole-4,5-dicarboxyl-ate ligands. These metal coordination units are connected by bridging imidazole-4,5-dicarboxyl-ate ligands, generating a two-dimensional heterometallic layer. These layers are stacked along the a axis via O-H?O hydrogen-bonding inter-actions to generate a three-dimensional framework.

The Eu(III) ion is eight-coordinated by two O atoms from two Hbdc ligands, three O atoms from two H(2)bdc ligands and three water mol-ecules, showing a distorted square-anti-prismatic geometry. The Eu(III) ions are bridged by the carboxyl-ate groups of the Hbdc and H(2)bdc ligands, forming a chain along [110], with an Eu?Eu separation of 5.4594?(3)?Å. These chains are further connected by inter-molecular O-H?O, N-H?O and N-H?N hydrogen bonds, as well as ?-? inter-actions between the imidazole and benzene rings [centroid-centroid distances = 3.558?(3), 3.906?(2), 3.397?(3), 3.796?(2) and 3.898?(2)?Å], into a three-dimensional supra-molecular network.

Furthermore, two symmetric TbO(9) polyhedra share their edges, forming Tb(2)O(16) dimers, which are linked by adipate bridges into a layered structure. Inter-molecular O-H?O hydrogen bonds link these layers into a three-dimensional network. One of the C atoms of the adipate ligand is disordered over two positions with site-occupancy factors of 0.622?(9) and 0.378?(9). The structure also contains a disordered mol-ecule of water of hydration, lying close to a special position, with partial occupancy.

In the crystal, each benzene-dicarboxyl-ate anion bridges adjacent Mn(II) cations through the terminal carboxyl-ate groups, forming a polymeric complex chain along the a axis. One Mn-O(carboxyl-ate) bond is much longer than the others. In the crystal, π-π stacking is observed between nearly parallel [dihedral angle = 4.32 (6)°] benzimidazole aromatic ring systems of adjacent mol-ecules, the centroid-centroid distance between the imidazole and benzene rings being 3.5421 (11) Å. Extensive inter-molecular O-H⋯O and N-H⋯O hydrogen bonding is present in the crystal structure. The two lattice water mol-ecules are located on twofold rotation axes.
