Nesticus baeticus sp. n., a new troglobitic spider species from south-west Europe (Araneae, Nesticidae).

Project description:A new troglobitic species, Nesticus baeticussp. n. (♂♀), inhabiting the karst landscapes of the high part of the Cazorla, Segura and Las Villas Natural Park (NE Jaén, Spain) where it has been found in 8 caves is diagnosed and described, its distribution and habitat are also analyzed.The new species belongs to the Iberian species group that includes Nesticus luquei, Nesticus lusitanicus and Nesticus murgis. Evolutionary relationships of the Iberian Nesticus species are discussed on the basis of morphological and molecular data (cox1 and rrnL).

Males are characterised by the absence of the conductor and females are unique within the genus in having the lateral lobes of their epigyne fused. Bumba, a replacement name for Maraca Perez-Miles, 2005 and Bumbalennoni, a new tarantula species from western Amazonia (Araneae, Theraphosidae, Theraphosinae).

Project description:We propose the name Bumba as a new name for Maraca, preoccupied by Maraca Hebard, 1926 (Orthoptera). We describe and illustrate Bumbalennoni, a new theraphosid species from Caxiuanã, Pará, Brazil. This species differs from the other species of the genus in the extremely reduced keel on male palpal organ and in the higher number of labial and maxillary cuspules. Females additionally differ in the spermathecal morphology. As a consequence of the name replacement, three new combinations are established.

New species of smiley-faced spider Spintharus (Araneae, Theridiidae) from Brazil, and comments on unobserved diversity in South America.

Project description:Spintharus is a genus of spiders that contained only two species until 2018 when it was demonstrated that a 'widespread' species was instead composed of multiple short-range endemics. This note redescribes Spintharus gracilis Keyserling and describes a new species of Spintharus (Araneae, Theridiidae), S. leverger sp. nov., both based on specimens from Brazil. We also examine specimens from several additional localities in Brazil displaying variation consistent with patterns previously found within the Caribbean: geographically isolated and unique localities may contain independent species lineages. Given the limited number of specimens, profuse variation, and lack of DNA data from museum specimens, it is challenging to gauge the number of species in the observed material. Instead of describing these as new species here, we highlight this variation and hypothesize that in South America, a greater diversity of the genus across the geographical landscape will be found than predicted based on Levi's "widespread Spintharus flavidus" hypothesis. Our results suggest that continental efforts to sample the genus would be profitable, as this charismatic group likely harbors unappreciated diversity throughout the continent.

Project description:Seven new species of the spider genus Pinelema Wang & Li, 2012, from Vietnam are reported: P. damtaoensis Zhao & Li, sp. n. (??), P. nuocnutensis Zhao & Li, sp. n. (??), P. laensis Zhao & Li, sp. n. (??), P. pacchanensis Zhao & Li, sp. n. (??), P. spirulata Zhao & Li, sp. n. (??), P. xiezi Zhao & Li, sp. n. (??), and P. zhenzhuang Zhao & Li, sp. n. (??). Prior to the current study, this genus contained eight species and was known only from southwestern China. The diagnosis of the genus is updated, accounting for characters found in the new species.

Two new species of Harpactea (Araneae, Dysderidae) from Turkey.

Project description:Two new species, Harpactea arnedoisp. n. and Harpactea kenceisp. n., are described on the basis of both sexes from the eastern Mediterranean and Aegean regions of Turkey. Harpactea kenceisp. n. can be easily distinguished from all other Turkish and European representatives of the genus by the structure of the flattened, massive embolus on the male copulatory organ. Although resembling Stalagtia in palpal morphology, we describe one of the new species as Harpactea arnedoisp. n. For both Turkish species, detailed morphological descriptions and diagnoses are presented together with figures of the copulatory organs.
