ABSTRACT: The title compound, C(12)H(14)N(5)O(2) (+)·Br(-), is the hydro-bromide salt of a Schiff base in which protonation has taken place at the pyridine N atom. This organic cation is essentially planar (r.m.s. of all fitted non-H atoms = 0.0448?Å). In the crystal, N-H?Br hydrogen bonds as well as C-H?O and C-H?Br inter-actions connect the mol-ecules, forming a three-dimensional network.

One of the nitro groups is disordered over two orientations in a 0.710 (6):0.290 (6) ratio. In the crystal, the cations and anions are linked by N-H⋯O hydrogen bonds, generating infinite ribbons extending along [100] which incorporate R(4) (4)(22) ring motifs. Weak C-H⋯O inter-actions also occur.

Project description:1,3-Diethyl-2-thio-barbituric acid reacts with 2-anisaldehyde to form the Michael addition product 2-anisylbis(1,3-diethyl-2-thio-barbitur-5-yl)methanate, which crystallizes as the title pyridin-ium salt, C(5)H(6)N(+)·C(24)H(29)N(4)O(5)S(2) (-), when it reacts with the pyridine used to catalyse the reaction. There are two independent ion pairs in the crystal structure. The anion features a methine C atom connected to three six-membered rings; one of the rings carries a hydr-oxy group, which engages in hydrogen bonding with the carbonyl group belonging to another ring. The monoclinic unit cell emulates an ortho-rhom-bic unit cell, and is a twin with a minor twin component of 35%.

The five-membered furan-ose ring in mol-ecule A adopts an envelope conformation, while the same ring in mol-ecule B has a twisted conformation. In the crystal, the A mol-ecules are linked via a pair of inter-molecular N-H⋯O hydrogen bonds, forming dimers. Each A mol-ecule is further linked to a B mol-ecule via a second N-H⋯O hydrogen bond. There are also a number of C-H⋯·O inter-actions present, leading to the formation of a three-dimensional network.

The atoms of the carboxyl group are also coplanar with the pteridine unit [r.m.s. deviation from the mean plane of the pteridine skeleton = 0.092?(2)?Å]. In the crystal, the presence of the water molecule of crystallization (O atom site symmetry 2) leads to a hydrogen-bonding pattern different from the one shown by many carboxylic acid compounds (dimers formed through O-H?O hydrogen bonds between neighbouring carboxyl groups): in the present structure, the water mol-ecule, which lies on a binary axis, acts as a bridge between two mol-ecules, forming a hydrogen-bonded dimer. Finally, there is a C-O?? contact involving a carboxyl-ate C-O and the pyrimidine ring with a short O?Cg distance of 2.738?(2)?Å.
