Ammonium imidazolium dichromate.

ABSTRACT: In the crystal structure of the title compound, (C(3)H(5)N(2))(NH(4))[Cr(2)O(7)], the anions and cations are linked through N-H?O hydrogen bonds, resulting in a three-dimensional structure which contains three kinds of layers parallel to (001). One layer contains imidazole cations, the other two layers the ammonium cations and dichromate anions. The dichromate anion has an eclipsed conformation with a dihedral angle of 14.65?(18)° between the mean planes of the O-P-O-P-O backbone.

Project description:Ionic liquid cations (ILCs) have been utilized in hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites (HOIPs) to enhance their photoluminescence performance. However, the high number of possible cations and anions needed to form ILCs makes the experimental measurement time and cost consuming. Computational methods that could assist the selection of ILCs for this task-specific application are highly desirable. Therefore, in this work, the photophysical properties of various ILCs, including linear aliphatic, five-membered, and six-membered cyclic aliphatic, and aromatic ILCs, were investigated using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT). Fluorescence and phosphorescence were analyzed using excited state dynamics (ESD) modules on ORCA at the B3LYP/def2TZVP level theory. All the investigated cations show fluorescence spectra either the UV or visible range. The cations with long-chain branches show fluorescence spectra in the visible range. Five membered rings show the phosphorescence spectra in the visible range, while the six-membered rings show the phosphorescence spectra in the near-infrared range.

Phenolphthalein Anilide Based Poly(Ether Sulfone) Block Copolymers Containing Quaternary Ammonium and Imidazolium Cations: Anion Exchange Membrane Materials for Microbial Fuel Cell.

Project description:A class of phenolphthalein anilide (PA)-based poly(ether sulfone) multiblock copolymers containing pendant quaternary ammonium (QA) and imidazolium (IM) groups were synthesized and evaluated as anion exchange membrane (AEM) materials. The AEMs were flexible and mechanically strong with good thermal stability. The ionomeric multiblock copolymer AEMs exhibited well-defined hydrophobic/hydrophilic phase-separated morphology in small-angle X-ray scattering and atomic force microscopy. The distinct nanophase separated membrane morphology in the AEMs resulted in higher conductivity (IECw = 1.3-1.5 mequiv./g, σ(OH-) = 30-38 mS/cm at 20 °C), lower water uptake and swelling. Finally, the membranes were compared in terms of microbial fuel cell performances with the commercial cation and anion exchange membranes. The membranes showed a maximum power density of ~310 mW/m2 (at 0.82 A/m2); 1.7 and 2.8 times higher than the Nafion 117 and FAB-PK-130 membranes, respectively. These results demonstrated that the synthesized AEMs were superior to Nafion 117 and FAB-PK-130 membranes.

Synthesis, Characterization, Biological Evaluation, and In Silico Studies of Imidazolium-, Pyridinium-, and Ammonium-Based Ionic Liquids Containing <i>n</i>-Butyl Side Chains.

Project description:Ionic liquids (ILs) have emerged as active pharmaceutical ingredients because of their excellent antibacterial and biological activities. Herein, we used the green-chemistry-synthesis procedure, also known as the metathesis method, to develop three series of ionic liquids using 1-methyl-3-butyl imidazolium, butyl pyridinium, and diethyldibutylammonium as cations, and bromide (Br-), methanesulfonate (CH3SO3-), bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (NTf2-), dichloroacetate (CHCl2CO2-), tetrafluoroborate (BF4-), and hydrogen sulfate (HSO4-) as anions. Spectroscopic methods were used to validate the structures of the lab-synthesized ILs. We performed an agar well diffusion assay by using pathogenic bacteria that cause various infections (Escherichia coli; Enterobacter aerogenes; Klebsiella pneumoniae; Proteus vulgaris; Pseudomonas aeruginosa; Streptococcus pneumoniae; Streptococcus pyogenes) to scrutinize the in vitro antibacterial activity of the ILs. It was established that the nature and unique combination of the cations and anions were responsible for the antibacterial activity of the ILs. Among the tested ionic liquids, the imidazolium cation and NTf2- and HSO4- anions exhibited the highest antibacterial activity. The antibacterial potential was further investigated by in silico studies, and it was observed that bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (NTf2-) containing imidazolium and pyridinium ionic liquids showed the maximum inhibition against the targeted bacterial strains and could be utilized in antibiotics. These antibacterial activities float the ILs as a promising alternative to the existing antibiotics and antiseptics.

Aqueous Two-Phase System Extraction of Polyketide-Based Fungal Pigments Using Ammonium- or Imidazolium-Based Ionic Liquids for Detection Purpose: A Case Study.

Project description:Demand for microbial colorants is now becoming a competitive research topic for food, cosmetics and pharmaceutics industries. In most applications, the pigments of interest such as polyketide-based red pigments from fungal submerged cultures are extracted by conventional liquid-liquid extraction methods requiring large volumes of various organic solvents and time. To address this question from a different angle, we proposed, here, to investigate the use of three different aqueous two-phase extraction systems using either ammonium- or imidazolium-based ionic liquids. We applied these to four fermentation broths of Talaromyces albobiverticillius (deep red pigment producer), Emericella purpurea (red pigment producer), Paecilomyces marquandii (yellow pigment producer) and Trichoderma harzianum (yellow-brown pigment producer) to investigate their selective extraction abilities towards the detection of polyketide-based pigments. Our findings led us to conclude that (i) these alternative extraction systems using ionic liquids as greener extractant means worked well for this extraction of colored molecules from the fermentation broths of the filamentous fungi investigated here; (ii) tetrabutylammonium bromide, [N4444]Br-, showed the best pigment extraction ability, with a higher putative affinity for azaphilone red pigments; (iii) the back extraction and recovery of the fungal pigments from ionic liquid phases remained the limiting point of the method under our selected conditions for potential industrial applications. Nevertheless, these alternative extraction procedures appeared to be promising ways for the detection of polyketide-based colorants in the submerged cultures of filamentous fungi.

Transcriptional toxicity of imidazolium- and cholinium-based ionic liquids

Project description:Ionic Liquids are a broad group of salts with low melting points that can be specifically tuned for a broad range of applications. Despite being initially considered “green” solvents, their better environmental friendliness compared to traditional solvents has been increasingly challenged. In this study, we aimed to investigate the molecular effects of ILs exposure by using RNA-sequencing to study differential gene expression patterns. Thus, we exposed Daphnia magna to 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([C2mim]Cl), 1-dodecyl chloride-3-methylimidazolium ([C12mim]Cl) and cholinium chloride ([Chol]Cl). Results suggest that the three ILs share several mechanisms of toxicity, including cellular membrane and cytoskeleton damage, oxidative stress, inhibition of antioxidant enzymes, mitochondrial affectation, changes in protein biosynthesis and energy production, DNA damage, and ultimately, programmed cell death and disease initiation. Overall, the dataset revealed that [C2mim]Cl and [C12mim]Cl were, respectively, the least and the most toxic ILs at the transcriptional level. Also, it is reinforced that [Chol]Cl is not devoid of environmental hazardous potential. Unique gene expression signatures could also be identified for each IL.

In the crystal, the components are connected by N-H?O, N-H?N and O-H?O hydrogen bonds, forming a two-dimensional network parallel to (001). In addition, weak inter-molecular C-H?O hydrogen bonds lead to the formation of a three-dimensional network featuring R(5) (5)(19) rings.

Project description:The asymmetric unit of the title compound, C(5)H(9)N(2) (+)·C(8)H(5)O(4) (-), consists of one protonated 2-ethyl-imidazolium cation and two half terephthalate anions. The anions and cations are linked through N-H?O hydrogen bonds while the anions are associated via O-H?O inter-actions, resulting in a layered structure. The ethyl group of the cation is disordered over twosites of occupancies 0.812?(14) and 0.188?(14). The hydroxy H atoms of the anions are equally disordered over two symmetry-related sites.

Project description:In both ionic components of the title salt, C(4)H(7)N(2) (+)·C(6)H(2)N(3)O(7) (-), the rings are approximately planar; the maximum deviation from the mean plane is an order of magnitude larger in the picrate ring [0.0289?(10)?Å] than in the imidazolium ring [0.0028?(10)?Å. The nitro groups are twisted with respect to the six-atom ring plane; the NO(2) groups next to the oxide O atom, at the 2- and 6-positions, are twisted more [by 53.59?(9) and 18.46?(12)°] than the NO(2) group at the 4-postition, for which the twist angle is 7.28?(16)°. In the crystal, N-H?O hydrogen bonds, in which the hydroxyl O atom acts as a double acceptor and one of the O atoms from a nitro group acts as an additional acceptor, connect mol-ecules into chains along the c-axis direction. Relatively short C-H?O contacts and ?-? inter-actions between symmetry-related six-membered rings [centroid-centroid distances = 3.5938?(10) and 3.6223?(10)?Å] also occur.

Project description:In the title salt, C(3)H(5)N(2) (+)·C(7)H(6)NO(2) (-), the carboxyl-ate group of the 4-amino-benzoate anion forms a dihedral angle of 13.23 (17)° with respect to the benzene ring. There are N-H⋯O hydrogen-bonding inter-actions between the anion and cation, and weak inter-molecular C-H⋯O contacts with carboxyl-ate O-atom acceptors of the 4-amino-benzoate anion result in extended three-dimensional R(4) (4)(22) and R(5) (6)(30) edge-fused rings along the [100], [010] and [001] directions.
