Trisodium scandium bis-(orthoborate).

ABSTRACT: Single crystals of tris-odium scandium bis-(orthoborate), Na(3)Sc(BO(3))(2), have been obtained by spontaneous crystallization from an Na(2)O-Sc(2)O(3)-B(2)O(3) melt. The crystal structure features a three-dimensional framework composed of planar [BO(3)](3-) groups and distorted ScO(6) octa-hedra with Na atoms in the cavities. The Sc atom occupies a special position (Wyckoff position 2b, site symmetry -1) and of the two Na atoms, one occupies a special position (Wyckoff position 2c, site symmetry -1).

Project description:Single crystals of the title compound, Li(3)Sc(BO(3))(2), have been obtained by spontaneous nucleation from a high-temperature melt. The title compound adopts a framework structure and is composed of distorted [ScO(6)] octa-hedra, [LiO(4)] tetra-hedra, [LiO(4)] recta-ngles and isolated [BO(3)] triangles. Except for the Sc and one Li atom (both on inversion centres), all atoms are in general positions.

Formation and ligand-based reductive chemistry of bridged bis-alkylidene scandium(iii) complexes.

Project description:The chemistry of rare-earth carbene and alkylidene complexes including their synthesis, structure and reaction is a challenging issue because of their high reactivity (or instability) and the lack of synthetic methods. In this work, we report the first synthesis of the bridged bis-alkylidene complexes which feature a 2-butene-1,1,4,4-tetraanion and four Sc-C(sp3) bonds by the reaction of 1,4-dilithio-1,3-butadienes with ScCl3. This reaction proceeds via two key intermediates: an isolable scandacyclopentadiene and a proposed scandacyclopropene. The scandacyclopentadiene undergoes ?,?'-C-C bond cleavage to generate the scandacyclopropene, which then dimerizes to afford the bridged bis-alkylidene complex via a cooperative double metathesis reaction. Reaction chemistry study of the bridged bis-alkylidene complex reveals their ligand-based reduction reactivity towards different oxidants such as hexachloroethane, disulfide and cyclooctatetraene.

Reduced Arene Complexes of Scandium.

Project description:Alkali metal naphthalenide or anthracenide reacted with scandium(III) anilides [Sc(X){N(tBu)Xy}2 (thf)] (X=N(tBu)Xy (1); X=Cl (2); Xy=C6 H3 -3,5-Me2 ) to give scandium complexes [M(thf)n ][Sc{N(tBu)Xy}2 (RA)] (M=Li-K; n=1-6; RA=C10 H8 2- (3-Naph-K) and C14 H10 2- (3-Anth-M)) containing a reduced arene ligand. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction revealed the scandium(III) center bonded to the naphthalene dianion in a ?2 :?-coordination mode, whereas the anthracene dianion is symmetrically attached to the scandium(III) center in a ?2 -fashion. All compounds have been characterized by multinuclear, including 45 Sc?NMR spectroscopy. Quantum chemical calculations of these intensely colored arene complexes confirm scandium to be in the oxidation state +3. The intense absorptions observed in the UV/Vis spectra are due to ligand-to-metal charge transfers. Whereas nitriles underwent C-C coupling reaction with the reduced arene ligand, the reaction with one equivalent of [NEt3 H][BPh4 ] led to the mono-protonation of the reduced arene ligand.

A New Class of Scandium Carbide Nanosheet.

Project description:A new class of two-dimensional scandium carbide nanosheet has been identified by using first-principles density functional theory. It has a primitive cell of Sc3C10, in which there are two pentagonal carbon rings surrounded by one scandium octagon. Being as the precussor of Volleyballene Sc20C60 and ScC nanotubes, the Sc3C10 nanosheet is exceptionally stable. By rolling up this Sc3C10 sheet, a series of stable ScC nanotubes have been obtained. All the nanotubes studied have been found to be metallic. Furthermore, the hydrogen storage capacity of the ScC nanotubes has been explored. The calculated results show that one unit of the (0,3) ScC nanotube can adsorb a maximum of 51 hydrogen molecules, reaching up to a 6.25?wt% hydrogen gravimetric density with an average binding energy of 0.23?eV/H2.

Thermoelectric Properties of Scandium Sesquitelluride.

Project description:Rare-earth (RE) tellurides have been studied extensively for use in high-temperature thermoelectric applications. Specifically, lanthanum and praseodymium-based compounds with the Th₃P₄ structure type have demonstrated dimensionless thermoelectric figures of merit (zT) up to 1.7 at 1200 K. Scandium, while not part of the lanthanide series, is considered a RE element due to its chemical similarity. However, little is known about the thermoelectric properties of the tellurides of scandium. Here, we synthesized scandium sesquitelluride (Sc₂Te₃) using a mechanochemical approach and formed sintered compacts through spark plasma sintering (SPS). Temperature-dependent thermoelectric properties were measured from 300⁻1100 K. Sc₂Te₃ exhibited a peak zT = 0.3 over the broad range of 500⁻750 K due to an appreciable power factor and low-lattice thermal conductivity in the mid-temperature range.

Project description:Treatment of scandium nitrate tetra-hydrate with the tetra-dentate ligand H2salophen [N,N'-bis-(salicyl-idene)-1,2-phenyl-enedi-amine] afforded the yellow dinuclear complex Sc(NO3)2(μ-salophen)Sc(salophen)(EtOH) or [Sc2(C20H14N2O2)2(NO3)2(C2H6O)] (systematic name: (ethanol-κO)bis-(nitrato-κ2 O,O'){μ-2,2'-[1,2-phenyl-enebis(nitrilo-methanylyl-idene)]diphenolato-κ4 N,N',O,O':κ2 O,O'}{2,2'-[1,2-phenyl-enebis(nitrilo-methanylyl-idene)]diphenolato-κ4 O,N,N',O'}discandium). In this compound, one salophen ligand displays a bridging coordination via the two oxygen atoms, while the other salophen ligand is attached to only one Sc center. This arrangement is stabilized by a hydrogen-bonded EtOH co-ligand, and by π-π stacking inter-actions between the two salophen ligands.

Synthesis and versatile reactivity of scandium phosphinophosphinidene complexes.

Project description:M=E/M?E multiple bonds (M?=?transition metal, E?=?main group element) are of significant fundamental scientific importance and have widespread applications. Expanding the ranges of M and E represents grand challenges for synthetic chemists and will bring new horizons for the chemistry. There have been reports of M=E/M?E multiple bonds for the majority of the transition metals, and even some actinide metals. In stark contrast, as the largest subgroup in the periodic table, rare-earth metals (Ln) were scarcely involved in Ln=E/Ln?E multiple bonds. Until recently, there were a few examples of rare-earth monometallic alkylidene, imido and oxo complexes, featuring Ln=C/N/O bonds. What are in absence are rare-earth monometallic phosphinidene complexes with Ln=P bonds. Herein, we report synthesis and structure of rare-earth monometallic phosphinidene complexes, namely scandium phosphinophosphinidene complexes. Reactivity of scandium phosphinophosphinidene complexes is also mapped out, and appears to be easily tuned by the supporting ligand.

Crystal structure of hy-droxy scandium nitrate chloride.

Project description:Each Sc3+ ion in the title salt, di-?-hydroxido-bis-[tri-aqua-(nitrato-?2 O,O')scandium(III)] dichloride, [Sc2(NO3)2(OH)2(H2O)6]Cl2, is coordinated by a nitrate anion, two hydroxide ions and three water mol-ecules to generate a distorted penta-gonal-bipyramidal ScO7 coordination polyhedron. The complete {[(NO3)(?-OH)Sc(H2O)3]2}2+ ion is generated by crystallographic inversion symmetry. The nitrate anion binds in a bidentate fashion whereas the hydroxide ions are bridged between two Sc centers. Two charge-balancing Cl- ions are located in the outer sphere. In the extended structure, O-H?O and O-H?Cl hydrogen bonds connect the components into a three-dimensional network.

Scandium Reduced Arene Complex: Protonation and Reaction with Azobenzene.

Project description:The reactivity of the reduced anthracene complex of scandium [Li(thf)3 ][Sc{N(tBu)Xy}2 (anth)] (2-anth-Li) (Xy=3,5-Me2 C6 H3 ; anth=C14 H10 2- , thf=tetrahydrofuran) toward Brønsted acid [NEt3 H][BPh4 ] and azobenzene is reported. While a stepwise protonation of 2-anth-Li with two equivalents of [NEt3 H][BPh4 ] afforded the scandium cation [Sc{N(tBu)Xy}2 (thf)2 ][BPh4 ] (3), reduction of azobenzene gave a thermolabile, anionic scandium reduced azobenzene complex [Li(thf)][Sc{N(tBu)Xy}2 (η2 -PhNNPh)] (4), which slowly lost one of the anilide ligands to form the neutral scandium azobenzene complex dimer [Sc{N(tBu)Xy}(μ-η2 :η2 -Ph2 N2 )]2 (5). Exposure of 3 to CO2 produced the scandium carbamate complex [Sc{κ2 -O2 CN(tBu)(Xy)}2 ][BPh4 ] (6) as a result of CO2 insertion into the Sc-N bonds. In an attempt to prepare scandium hydrides, the reaction of 3 with the hydride sources LiAlH4 and Na[BEt3 H] led to the terminal aluminum hydride [AlH{N(tBu)Xy}2 (thf)] (7) and the scandium n-butoxide [Sc{N(tBu)(Xy)}2 (μ-OnBu)] (8) after Sc/Al transmetalation and nucleophilic ring-opening of THF, respectively. All reported compounds isolated in moderate to good yields were fully characterized.

Project description:Administration of low-dose IL-2 prevents and cures type 1 diabetes (T1D) in NOD mice by boosting pancreatic regulatory T cells (Tregs) and is currently being evaluated in humans. Here, to improve treatment efficacy we tested higher IL-2 doses that, despite further boosting Tregs, rapidly precipitated T1D in pre-diabetic mice due to generalized immune activation. Although the combination of rapamycin (RAPA) plus IL-2 prevents NOD T1D development, a recent clinical trial translating this strategy into patients was halted due to C-peptide decline. Here, we show that RAPA/IL-2 combination was also ineffective to cure new onset T1D in mice and, surprisingly, RAPA broke IL-2-induced tolerance in a reversible way. RAPA partially counteracted IL-2 effects on Tregs and the combined treatment unexpectedly, impaired glucose homeostasis at multiple levels, possibly explaining the clinical outcome. Our data help understand IL-2 alone or RAPA/IL-2 combination limitations and could lead to the design of improved T1D therapies.
