4-[(E)-({4-[(4-Amino-phen-yl)sulfon-yl]phen-yl}imino)-meth-yl]phenol ethanol monosolvate.

ABSTRACT: In the title compound, C(19)H(16)N(2)O(3)S·C(2)H(6)O, the 4-hy-droxy-benzyl-idene group is oriented at dihedral angles of 73.17?(7) and 77.06?(7)° with respect to the aniline groups. The sulfonyl group make dihedral angles of 44.89?(13) and 59.16?(12)° with the adjacent aniline groups. In the crystal, a two-dimensional polymeric network parallel to (010) is formed by N-H?O, O-H?N and O-H?O hydrogen bonds. There also exist ?-? inter-actions with a distance of 3.5976?(18)?Å between the centroids of hy-droxy-phenyl rings.

The substituents are tilted out of the plane of the benzene ring by 64.48?(4) and 70.08?(5)°, respectively. In the crystal, mol-ecules form centrosymmetric dimers associated via pairs of N-H?O hydrogen bonds. The dimers are linked via the water and ethanol mol-ecules, forming two-dimensional hydrogen-bond networks lying parallel to (100).

Project description:The asymmetric unit of the title Schiff base molecule, C25H20N2O, contains two independent mol-ecules. In each mol-ecule, the C=N bond is in an E conformation. The most significant difference between the two mol-ecules is seen for the dihedral angles between the meth-oxy-substituted benzene ring and the two phenyl rings, which are 85.5 (1) and 82.3 (1)° in the first mol-ecule, and 49.0 (1) and 40.4 (1)° in the second. This conformational difference is reflected in the central C=N-C C torsion angle, which is 28.7 (2)° in the first mol-ecule and -29.8 (3)° in the other. In each mol-ecule, there is an intra-molecular O-H⋯N hydrogen bond.

In the crystal structure, there are intra-molecular O-H?N and N-H?N and inter-molecular N-H?O hydrogen bonds, the latter resulting in inversion dimers.
