A new species of the genus Helcogramma (Blenniiformes, Tripterygiidae) from Taiwan.

ABSTRACT: A new species of triplefin fish (Blenniiformes: Tripterygiidae), Helcogramma williamsi, is described from six specimens collected from southern Taiwan. This species is well distinguished from its congeners by possessing 13 second dorsal-fin spines; third dorsal-fin rays modally 11; anal-fin rays modally 19; pored scales in lateral line 22-24; dentary pore pattern modally 5+1+5; lobate supraorbital cirrus; broad, serrated or palmate nasal cirrus; first dorsal fin lower in height than second; males with yellow mark extending from anterior tip of upper lip to anterior margin of eye and a whitish blue line extending from corner of mouth onto preopercle. Comparisons and a diagnostic key are provided for the species of Helcogramma now known from Taiwan: Helcogramma fuscipectoris, Helcogramma inclinata, Helcogramma striata, Helcogramma trigloides, and the newly recorded, Helcogramma rhinoceros.

A new marine gobiid species of the genus Clariger Jordan & Snyder (Gobiidae, Teleostei) from Taiwan.

Project description:A new species of Clariger Jordan & Snyder, 1901 was collected from northern Taiwan. The genus was previously known only from Japanese waters. This discovery is the first formal and southernmost record of these marine gobies from the waters of subtropical Taiwan. The new species, Clariger taiwanensissp. n., is distinguished from its congeners by a unique combination of features: (1) fin rays: dorsal-fin rays III, I/8; anal-fin rays modally I/8; and pectoral-fin rays modally 19 (2+16+1); (2) longitudinal dermal ridge on head with 6 barbels; and (3) specific coloration pattern: head and trunk dark brown with scattered pale spots and blotches; cheek, ventral portion of head sometimes pale with deep brown spots; pectoral-fin base with a dark brown band; and caudal fin mostly dark brown proximally and with alternating and irregular dark brown and pale bands distally. A diagnostic key to all nominal species from Japan and Taiwan is provided.

Project description:Two new species of Stathmopodidae are described from Taiwan: Cuprina atayalica Shen & Hsu, sp. nov., reared from larvae on Microsorum brachylepis, and C. insolita Hsu & Shen, sp. nov., reared from larvae on Tectaria subtriphylla and T. harlandii. Diagnostic characters for both species are provided. Larval host plants and the biology of the immature stages of both new species are documented.

A taxonomic revision of the genus Angelica (Apiaceae) in Taiwan with a new species A. aliensis.

Project description:BackgroundAngelica L. sensu lato is a taxonomically complex genus, and many studies have utilized morphological and molecular features to resolve its classification issues. In Taiwan, there are six taxa within Angelica, and their taxonomic treatments have been a subject of controversy. In this study, we conducted a comprehensive analysis incorporating morphological and molecular (cpDNA and nrDNA) characteristics to revise the taxonomic treatments of Angelica in Taiwan.ResultsAs a result of our research, we have revised the classification between A. dahurica var. formosana and A. pubescens and merged two varieties of A. morrisonicola into a single taxon. A new taxon, A. aliensis, has been identified and found to share a close relationship with A. tarokoensis. Based on the morphological and molecular characteristics data, it has been determined that the former three taxa should be grouped into the Eurasian Angelica clade, while the remaining four taxa should belong to the littoral Angelica clade. Furthermore, Angelica species in Taiwan distributed at higher altitudes displayed higher genetic diversity, implying that the central mountain range of Taiwan serves as a significant reservoir of plant biodiversity. Genetic drift, such as bottlenecks, has been identified as a potential factor leading to the fixation or reduction of genetic diversity of populations in most Angelica species. We provide key to taxa, synopsis, phenology, and distribution for each taxon of Taiwan.ConclusionsOur comprehensive analysis of morphological and molecular features has shed light on the taxonomic complexities within Angelica in Taiwan, resolving taxonomic issues and providing valuable insights into the phylogenetic relationships of Angelica in Taiwan.

Beetles of the Genus <i>Lewisister</i> (Coleoptera, Histeridae), with Description of a New Species from Taiwan.

Project description:The genus Lewisister Bickhardt, 1912 was previously only known to contain a single species, L. excellens Bickhardt, 1912, and had only been recorded from Southeast Asia. In this study, a new species found in Taiwan, L. masumotoi sp. nov., is described and the male genitalia are illustrated. Additional morphological characters are presented for L. excellens Bickhardt, 1912 and an illustration of its male genitalia is provided. The pairwise genetic distance of COI sequences of Lewisister are also provided to support the delimitation of both species. Both species are distributed in Taiwan, and the distribution records from Taiwan are discussed.

Project description:A new mealybug species, Chorizococcus zoysiaesp. n., feeding on Zoysia tenuifolia (Poaceae), is described from Taiwan. Adult female, third-instar female, second-instar female and first-instar nymph were described and illustrated in this article. Keys are provides to (a) separate this new species from similar species of Chorizococcus and those of same genus on zoysia grasses and (b) to identify instars of the new species. In addition, Chorizococcus mirzayansi Moghaddam is transferred to the genus Spilococcus as Spilococcus mirzayansi (Moghaddam), comb. n.

Revision of the genus Dercetina from Taiwan and their similar species, with description of a new species from Myanmar (Insecta, Chrysomelidae, Galerucinae).

Project description:Species of the genus Dercetina Gressitt & Kimoto, 1963 in Taiwan are revised. Dercetina azumai Gressitt and Kimoto, 1966, Dercetina itoi Kimoto, 1969, and Dercetina shirozui Kimoto, 1969 are redescribed. Dercetina chinensis (Weise, 1889), Dercetina taiwana (Chûjô, 1938), and Dercetina unifasciata (Allard, 1889) are removed from synonymy with Dercetina flavocincta (Hope, 1831). Dercetina flavocincta and Dercetina nakanei Kimoto, 1969 are transferred to the genus Arthrotus Motschulsky, 1858. Lectotypes are designated for Dercetis taiwana Chûjô, 1938, and Antipha varipennis Jacoby, 1890. The synonymies of Antipha flavofasciata Baly, 1879 and Dercetes femoralis Weise, 1922 with Arthrotus flavocincta (Hope, 1831), Antipha varipennis Jacoby, 1890 with Dercetina chinensis (Weise, 1889) are supported. A new species, Dercetina barclayi sp. n. which was confused with Dercetina flavocincta, is described from Myanmar.

A Review of the Harvestman Genus Metadentobunus (Opiliones: Sclerosomatidae: Gagrellinae) with A Description of A New Species From Taiwan.

Project description:Ssu-Li Chen and Hsi-Te Shih (2018) The harvestman genus Metadentobunus is endemic to Taiwan, and has two taxa, M. formosae formosae Roewer, 1915 and M. formosae garampiensis Suzuki, 1944. The two subspecies have been raised as two species, and this study redescribes the type species M. formosae based on the type specimen and a neotype of M. garampiensis Suzuki, 1944 is assigned. A new species, Metadentobunus brevispinus sp. nov., is also established from central Taiwan based on morphological and molecular evidence. This new species differs from other congeneric species by having one pair of shorter (than other congeners) spines at frontal margin of the ocularium. It can also be distinguished from M. garampiensis by the basal shape of the penile shaft (constricted vs. parallel), location of the seminal receptacle in ovipositor (5th-6th segment vs. 6th-7th segment) and number of ampullas in the terminal of the seminal receptacle (2 vs. 3). Molecular evidence from mitochondrial 16S rDNA and cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) further supports the identity of this new species. An identification key for this genus is included as well.
