Random and non-random monoallelic expression.

ABSTRACT: Monoallelic expression poses an intriguing problem in epigenetics because it requires the unequal treatment of two segments of DNA that are present in the same nucleus and which can have absolutely identical sequences. This review will consider different known types of monoallelic expression. For all monoallelically expressed genes, their respective allele-specific patterns of expression have the potential to affect brain function and dysfunction.
