Project description:In order to improve the h-index in terms of its accuracy and sensitivity to the form of the citation distribution, we propose the new bibliometric index [symbol in text]. The basic idea is to define, for any author with a given number of citations, an "ideal" citation distribution which represents a benchmark in terms of number of papers and number of citations per publication, and to obtain an index which increases its value when the real citation distribution approaches its ideal form. The method is very general because the ideal distribution can be defined differently according to the main objective of the index. In this paper we propose to define it by a "squared-form" distribution: this is consistent with many popular bibliometric indices, which reach their maximum value when the distribution is basically a "square". This approach generally rewards the more regular and reliable researchers, and it seems to be especially suitable for dealing with common situations such as applications for academic positions. To show the advantages of the [symbol in text]-index some mathematical properties are proved and an application to real data is proposed.

Project description:BACKGROUND:We recently developed CoCites, a citation-based search method that is designed to be more efficient than traditional keyword-based methods. The method begins with identification of one or more highly relevant publications (query articles) and consists of two searches: the co-citation search, which ranks publications on their co-citation frequency with the query articles, and the citation search, which ranks publications on frequency of all citations that cite or are cited by the query articles. METHODS:We aimed to reproduce the literature searches of published systematic reviews and meta-analyses and assess whether CoCites retrieves all eligible articles while screening fewer titles. RESULTS:A total of 250 reviews were included. CoCites retrieved a median of 75% of the articles that were included in the original reviews. The percentage of retrieved articles was higher (88%) when the query articles were cited more frequently and when they had more overlap in their citations. Applying CoCites to only the highest-cited article yielded similar results. The co-citation and citation searches combined were more efficient when the review authors had screened more than 500 titles, but not when they had screened less. CONCLUSIONS:CoCites is an efficient and accurate method for finding relevant related articles. The method uses the expert knowledge of authors to rank related articles, does not depend on keyword selection and requires no special expertise to build search queries. The method is transparent and reproducible.

Project description:Pseudouridine (ψ) is the most common non-canonical ribonucleoside present on mammalian non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs), where is contributes ~10% of the total uridine level. However, ψ constitutes only ~0.3% of the uridines present on mRNAs and its effect on mRNA function remains unclear. Ψ residues have however been shown to inhibit the detection of exogenous RNA transcripts by host innate immune factors, thus raising the possibility that viruses might have subverted the addition of ψ residues to mRNAs by host pseudouridine synthase (PUS) enzymes as a way to inhibit antiviral responses in infected cells. Here, we describe and validate a novel antibody-based ψ mapping technique called photo-crosslinking assisted ψ sequencing (PA-ψ-seq) and then use it to map ψ residues on not only multiple cellular RNAs but also the mRNAs and genomic RNA encoded by HIV-1. We also describe several 293T-derived cell lines in which human PUS enzymes previously reported to add ψ residues to mRNAs, specifically PUS1, PUS7 and TRUB1/PUS4, were individually inactivated by gene editing. Surprisingly, while this allowed us to assign several sites of ψ addition on cellular mRNAs to each of these three PUS enzymes, the ψ sites present on HIV-1 transcripts remained unaffected. However, loss of PUS1 function did significantly reduce HIV-1 gene expression by a presumably indirect mechanism.

Project description:Although a high-resolution three-dimensional mapping system has made it possible to treat complicated atrial tachyarrhythmia (AT), there remain cases that are difficult to diagnose and treat. However, when multiple different ATs alternately appear, mapping and diagnosis of those are more difficult. Parallel mapping module is well known as a good option to simultaneously map two or more different ATs when they alternately appear. When performing parallel mapping of two different ATs, one bipolar signal of the reference catheter is used as a timing reference and a cycle length filter is used for differentiating AT1, AT2, and others, including sinus rhythm, fusion beats, or catheter-induced premature atrial complex. Therefore, it has some limitations for differentiating multifocal ATs. We present a case wherein multifocal ATs were successfully eliminated by combining parallel mapping module and dual-chamber intra-cardiac pattern matching technique that we have previously reported.Learning objective▪Parallel mapping is a useful tool when two or more tachycardias alternately occur; however, it has some limitations.▪Dual-chamber intra-cardiac pattern matching technique, which combines right atrial and coronary sinus potentials, provides better discrimination than coronary sinus reference alone.▪By combining parallel mapping and dual-chamber intra-cardiac pattern matching, two or more atrial tachycardias could be automatically and simultaneously mapped.

Project description:ObjectivesThe research identified the publication types and ages most frequently cited in the infectious diseases literature and the most commonly cited journals.MethodsFrom 2008-2010, 5,056 articles in 5 infectious diseases journals cited 166,650 items. Two random samples were drawn: one (n = 1,060) from the total set of citations and one (n = 1,060) from the citations to journal articles. For each sample citation, publication type and date, age of cited item, and inclusion of uniform resource locator (URL) were collected. For each item in the cited journal articles sample, journal title, publication date, and age of the cited article were collected. Bradford zones were used for further analysis.ResultsJournal articles (91%, n = 963) made up the bulk of cited items, followed by miscellaneous items (4.6%, n = 49). Dates of publication for cited items ranged from 1933-2010 (mean = 2001, mode = 2007). Over half (50.2%, n = 483) of cited journal articles were published within the previous 5 years. The journal article citations included 358 unique journal titles.DiscussionThe citations to current and older publications in a range of disciplines, heavy citation of journals, and citation of miscellaneous and government documents revealed the depth and breadth of resources needed for the study of infectious diseases.

Project description:ObjectiveThis research seeks to understand the publication types and ages cited most often in environmental health literature and the most commonly cited journal titles.MethodsFrom the 43,896 items cited in Environmental Health Perspectives and the Journal of Environmental Health during 2008-2010, 2 random samples were drawn: First, 1,042 items representing all citations were analyzed with respect to publication type, age, and Internet link. Second, the cited journal name and citation age were recorded for 1,038 items culled from only citations to journal articles. All journal titles were classified into Bradford zones and assigned subject disciplines.ResultsJournal articles (n = 891, 85.5%) were the most heavily cited publication type. Cited items' publication years ranged from 1951 to 2010. Close to half (49.1%) of all cited items were published 5 or fewer years previous. Sixteen journal titles (3.9%) accounted for 32.5% of all cited journal articles. The 3 most common subject disciplines-"Public, Environmental & Occupational Health," "Environmental Sciences," and "Toxicology"-accounted for 21.6% of all unique journal titles and 45.3% of all citations.ConclusionsEnvironmental health citation patterns differ from other public health disciplines in terms of cited publication types, cited journals, and age of citations.

Project description:This paper aimed to perform systematical study on the distribution of landslide thrust in pile-anchor support system, which has been a widely applicable treatment method in landslide control with safety, highly efficiency and adaptation. The advantage of photoelastic technique is visualization of strain and stress fields, therefore photoelastic model tests are conducted to show the distribution of landslide thrust in pile-anchor structure before failure in landslide. The effects of different materials and pile lengths are investigated by 6 photoelastic test cases under different loading conditions. It can be found from quantitative analysis of experimental results that load proportion of anchor would increase gradually with the decrease of pile embedded depth or the increase of landslide thrust force. Meanwhile, landslide thrust distribution in pile-anchor structure is directly affected by the stiffness of piles. The pile-anchor structure is significantly better at reducing bending moment value and optimizing bending moment distribution of pile. Finally, some theoretical analysis and design suggestions are proposed based on the experimental study.

Project description:Cleaning is a fundamental routine task in human life that is now handed over to leading-edge technologies such as robotics and artificial intelligence. Various floor-cleaning robots have been developed with different cleaning functionalities, such as vacuuming and scrubbing. However, failures can occur when a robot tries to clean an incompatible dirt type. These situations will not only reduce the efficiency of the robot but also impose severe damage to the robots. Therefore, developing effective methods to classify the cleaning tasks performed in different regions and assign them to the respective cleaning agent has become a trending research domain. This article proposes a vision-based system that employs YOLOv5 and DeepSORT algorithms to detect and classify dirt to create a dirt distribution map that indicates the regions to be assigned for different cleaning requirements. This map would be useful for a collaborative cleaning framework for deploying each cleaning robot to its respective region to achieve an uninterrupted and energy-efficient operation. The proposed method can be executed with any mobile robot and on any surface and dirt, achieving high accuracy of 81.0%, for dirt indication in the dirt distribution map.

Project description:Pseudo-absence selection for spatial distribution models (SDMs) is the subject of ongoing investigation. Numerous techniques continue to be developed, and reports of their effectiveness vary. Because the quality of presence and absence data is key for acceptable accuracy of correlative SDM predictions, determining an appropriate method to characterise pseudo-absences for SDM's is vital. The main methods that are currently used to generate pseudo-absence points are: 1) randomly generated pseudo-absence locations from background data; 2) pseudo-absence locations generated within a delimited geographical distance from recorded presence points; and 3) pseudo-absence locations selected in areas that are environmentally dissimilar from presence points. There is a need for a method that considers both geographical extent and environmental requirements to produce pseudo-absence points that are spatially and ecologically balanced. We use a novel three-step approach that satisfies both spatial and ecological reasons why the target species is likely to find a particular geo-location unsuitable. Step 1 comprises establishing a geographical extent around species presence points from which pseudo-absence points are selected based on analyses of environmental variable importance at different distances. This step gives an ecologically meaningful explanation to the spatial range of background data, as opposed to using an arbitrary radius. Step 2 determines locations that are environmentally dissimilar to the presence points within the distance specified in step one. Step 3 performs K-means clustering to reduce the number of potential pseudo-absences to the desired set by taking the centroids of clusters in the most environmentally dissimilar class identified in step 2. By considering spatial, ecological and environmental aspects, the three-step method identifies appropriate pseudo-absence points for correlative SDMs. We illustrate this method by predicting the New Zealand potential distribution of the Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus) and the Western corn rootworm (Diabrotica virgifera virgifera).
