Barium dierbium(III) tetra-sulfide.

ABSTRACT: Barium dierbium(III) tetra-sulfide, BaEr2S4, crystallizes with four formula units in the ortho-rhom-bic space group Pnma in the CaFe2O4 structure type. The asymmetric unit contains two Er, one Ba, and four S atoms, each with .m. site symmetry. The structure consists of channels formed by corner- and edge-sharing ErS6 octa-hedra in which Ba atoms reside. The resultant coordination of Ba is that of a bicapped trigonal prism.

Project description:Single crystals of barium bis-[tetra-fluorido-bromate(III)], Ba[BrF4]2, were obtained in the form of tiny blocks. Crystal-structure refinement of Ba[BrF4]2 from single-crystal X-ray diffraction data confirmed the previous model obtained on the basis of powder data [Ivlev et al. (2014 ▸). Eur. J. Inorg. Chem. pp. 6261-6267], but with all atoms refined with anisotropic displacement parameters. The crystal structure consists of two symmetry-independent barium cations that are each coordinated by twelve fluorine atoms, forming edge-sharing polyhedra, and an almost square-planar [BrF4]- anion. The compound crystallizes in the Ba[AuF4]2 structure type.

Project description:The title compound, {[Ba7(C3H5O2)14]·0.946C3H6O2·4H2O} n , is represented by a metal-organic framework structure that is held together by Ba-O-Ba bonds, as well as by O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds of moderate strength. The structure comprises of four independent Ba2+ cations (one of which is situated on a twofold rotation axis), seven independent propionate and two independent water mol-ecules. The bond-valence sums of all the cations indicate a slight overbonding. There is also an occupationally, as well as a positionally disordered propionic acid mol-ecule present in the structure. Its occupation is slightly lower than the full occupation while the disordered mol-ecules occupy two positions related by a rotation about a twofold rotation axis. In addition, the methyl group in the symmetry-independent propionic acid mol-ecule is also disordered, and occupies two positions. Each propionic acid mol-ecule coordinates to just one cation from a pair of symmetry-equivalent Ba2+ sites and is simultaneously bonded by an O-H⋯Opropionate hydrogen bond. This means that on a microscopic scale, the coordination number of the corresponding Ba2+ site is either 9 or 10. The methyl as well as hy-droxy hydrogen atoms of the disordered propionic acid mol-ecule were not determined.

Poly[tetra-aqua-bis(?(2)-2,4,6-trinitro-phenolato)barium(II)].

Project description:The asymmetric unit of the title compound, [Ba(C(6)H(2)N(3)O(7))(2)(H(2)O)(4)](n), consists of a barium ion coordinated by two nitrophenolate ligands and four water mol-ecules. Barium is deca-coordinated by O atoms. These units are linked together through bridging nitro groups to form a one-dimensional polymeric chain. The three-dimensional packing is facilitated through hydrogen-bonding inter-actions mediated through water mol-ecules. The coordination distances around Ba vary from 2.728?(4) to 3.138?(5)?Å. The crystal sample, on exposure to air at room temperature for many days, slowly loses the water and peels out as filaments.

Project description:In the title complex, [BaCd(C(3)H(2)O(4))(2)(H(2)O)(4)](n), the Ba(II) atoms, located on crystallographic twofold axes, adopt slightly distorted square-anti-prismatic coordination geometries, while the Cd(II) atoms, which lie on crystallographic centres of symmetry, have a distorted octa-hedral coordination. Each malonate dianion binds two different Cd(II) atoms and two different Ba(II) atoms. This connectivity generates alternating layers along [100] in the structure, with one type containing Cd(II) cations and malonate dianions, while the other is primarily composed of Ba(II) ions and coordinated water mol-ecules. The water mol-ecules also participate in extensive O-H⋯O hydrogen bonding.

Seawater barium and sulfide removal improved marine habitability for the Cambrian Explosion of early animals.

Project description:An increase in atmospheric pO2 has been proposed as a trigger for the Cambrian Explosion at ∼539-514 Ma but the mechanistic linkage remains unclear. To gain insights into marine habitability for the Cambrian Explosion, we analysed excess Ba contents (Baexcess) and isotope compositions (δ138Baexcess) of ∼521-Myr-old metalliferous black shales in South China. The δ138Baexcess values vary within a large range and show a negative logarithmic correlation with Baexcess, suggesting a major (>99%) drawdown of oceanic Ba inventory via barite precipitation. Spatial variations in Baexcess and δ138Baexcess indicate that Ba removal was driven by sulfate availability that was ultimately derived from the upwelling of deep seawaters. Global oceanic oxygenation across the Ediacaran-Cambrian transition may have increased the sulfate reservoir via oxidation of sulfide and concurrently decreased the Ba reservoir by barite precipitation. The removal of both H2S and Ba that are deleterious to animals could have improved marine habitability for early animals.

Crystal structure of tetra-iso-butyl-thiuram di-sulfide.

Project description:Tetra-kis(2-methyl-prop-yl)thio-per-oxy-dicarbonic di-amide, or tetra-iso-butyl-thiuram di-sulfide, C18H36N2S4, crystallizes in a general position in the triclinic space group P-1 but shows pseudo-C2 symmetry about the di-sulfide bond. The C-S-S-C torsion angle [-85.81 (2)°] and the dihedral angle between the two NCS2 mean planes [85.91 (5)°] are within the range observed for this compound type. Multiple intra- and inter-molecular S⋯H-C close contacts appear to play a role in assisting the specific conformation of the pendant isobutyl groups and the packing arrangement of mol-ecules within the cell. Tetra-iso-butyl-thiuram di-sulfide mol-ecules of one optical configuration form sheets in the plane of the a and b axes. Inversion centers exist between adjoining sheets, which stack along the c axis and alternate in the handedness of their constituent mol-ecules.

Project description:In the title manganese(III) complex, [MnCl(2)(C(10)H(24)N(4))]BF(4) or trans-[MnCl(2)(cyclam)]BF(4) (cyclam is the tetra-dentate amine ligand 1,4,8,11-tetra-azacyclo-tetra-deca-ne), the Mn(III) ions occupy the center of a distorted octa-hedron coordinated by all four ligand nitro-gen donors in the macrobicyclic cavity and two chloride ions occupy the axial positions. Intra-molecular hydrogen bonding involving the coordinated chloride ions and the hydrogen atoms of the cyclam ligand is observed. Inter-molecular hydrogen bonding involving the tetrafluoridoborate anion and hydrogen atoms of the cyclam ligand leads to an infinite one-dimensional chain along the a axis. The tetra-fluoridoborate and inorganic units are linked by N-H?F hydrogen bonds. The structure may be compared with those of analogous compounds [MnCl(2)(cyclam)]ClO(4) and [Mn(CN)(2)(cyclam)]ClO(4).
