Highly sensitive and selective gas sensor using hydrophilic and hydrophobic graphenes.

ABSTRACT: New hydrophilic 2D graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets with various oxygen functional groups were employed to maintain high sensitivity in highly unfavorable environments (extremely high humidity, strong acidic or basic). Novel one-headed polymer optical fiber sensor arrays using hydrophilic GO and hydrophobic reduced graphene oxide (rGO) were carefully designed, leading to the selective sensing of volatile organic gases for the first time. The two physically different surfaces of GO and rGO could provide the sensing ability to distinguish between tetrahydrofuran (THF) and dichloromethane (MC), respectively, which is the most challenging issue in the area of gas sensors. The eco-friendly physical properties of GO allowed for faster sensing and higher sensitivity when compared to previous results for rGO even under extreme environments of over 90% humidity, making it the best choice for an environmentally friendly gas sensor.

A 3D Chemically Modified Graphene Hydrogel for Fast, Highly Sensitive, and Selective Gas Sensor.

Project description:Reduced graphene oxide (RGO) has proved to be a promising candidate in high-performance gas sensing in ambient conditions. However, trace detection of different kinds of gases with simultaneously high sensitivity and selectivity is challenging. Here, a chemiresistor-type sensor based on 3D sulfonated RGO hydrogel (S-RGOH) is reported, which can detect a variety of important gases with high sensitivity, boosted selectivity, fast response, and good reversibility. The NaHSO3 functionalized RGOH displays remarkable 118.6 and 58.9 times higher responses to NO2 and NH3, respectively, compared with its unmodified RGOH counterpart. In addition, the S-RGOH sensor is highly responsive to volatile organic compounds. More importantly, the characteristic patterns on the linearly fitted response-temperature curves are employed to distinguish various gases for the first time. The temperature of the sensor is elevated rapidly by an imbedded microheater with little power consumption. The 3D S-RGOH is characterized and the sensing mechanisms are proposed. This work gains new insights into boosting the sensitivity of detecting various gases by combining chemical modification and 3D structural engineering of RGO, and improving the selectivity of gas sensing by employing temperature dependent response characteristics of RGO for different gases.

Graphene nanomesh as highly sensitive chemiresistor gas sensor.

Project description:Graphene is a one atom thick carbon allotrope with all surface atoms that has attracted significant attention as a promising material as the conduction channel of a field-effect transistor and chemical field-effect transistor sensors. However, the zero bandgap of semimetal graphene still limits its application for these devices. In this work, ethanol-chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of a grown p-type semiconducting large-area monolayer graphene film was patterned into a nanomesh by the combination of nanosphere lithography and reactive ion etching and evaluated as a field-effect transistor and chemiresistor gas sensors. The resulting neck-width of the synthesized nanomesh was about ∼20 nm and was comprised of the gap between polystyrene (PS) spheres that was formed during the reactive ion etching (RIE) process. The neck-width and the periodicities of the graphene nanomesh (GNM) could be easily controlled depending on the duration/power of the RIE and the size of the PS nanospheres. The fabricated GNM transistor device exhibited promising electronic properties featuring a high drive current and an I(ON)/I(OFF) ratio of about 6, significantly higher than its film counterpart. Similarly, when applied as a chemiresistor gas sensor at room temperature, the graphene nanomesh sensor showed excellent sensitivity toward NO(2) and NH(3), significantly higher than their film counterparts. The ethanol-based graphene nanomesh sensors exhibited sensitivities of about 4.32%/ppm in NO(2) and 0.71%/ppm in NH(3) with limits of detection of 15 and 160 ppb, respectively. Our demonstrated studies on controlling the neck width of the nanomesh would lead to further improvement of graphene-based transistors and sensors.

Highly sensitive and selective odorant sensor using living cells expressing insect olfactory receptors.

Project description:This paper describes a highly sensitive and selective chemical sensor using living cells (Xenopus laevis oocytes) within a portable fluidic device. We constructed an odorant sensor whose sensitivity is a few parts per billion in solution and can simultaneously distinguish different types of chemicals that have only a slight difference in double bond isomerism or functional group such as -OH, -CHO and -C(=O)-. We developed a semiautomatic method to install cells to the fluidic device and achieved stable and reproducible odorant sensing. In addition, we found that the sensor worked for multiple-target chemicals and can be integrated with a robotic system without any noise reduction systems. Our developed sensor is compact and easy to replace in the system. We believe that the sensor can potentially be incorporated into a portable system for monitoring environmental and physical conditions.

A Highly Sensitive Ammonia Gas Sensor Using Micrometer-Sized Core-Shell-Type Spherical Polyaniline Particles.

Project description:A highly sensitive NH3 gas sensor based on micrometer-sized polyaniline (PANI) spheres was successfully fabricated. The PANI microspheres were prepared via a facile in situ chemical oxidation polymerization in a polystyrene microsphere dispersion solution, resulting in a core-shell structure. The sensor response increased as the diameter of the microspheres increased. The PSt@PANI(4.5) sensor, which had microspheres with a 4.5 μm average diameter, showed the largest response value of 77 for 100 ppm dry NH3 gas at 30 °C, which was 20 times that of the PANI-deposited film-based sensor. Even considering measurement error, the calculated detection limit was 46 ppb. A possible reason for why high sensitivity was achieved is simply the use of micrometer-sized PANI spherical particles. This research succeeded in providing a new and simple technology for developing a high-sensitivity NH3 gas sensor that operates at room temperature.

Highly sensitive and selective oligonucleotide sensor for sickle cell disease gene using photon upconverting nanoparticles.

Project description:We report the design of an oligonucleotide sensor for the detection of point mutation associated with sickle cell disease. The sensor was based on luminescence resonance energy transfer between a donor and an acceptor. Photon upconverting nanoparticles (NaYF(4) doped with Yb(3+) and Er(3+)) were used as the donor and a conventional fluorophore, N,N,N',N'-tetramethyl-6-carboxyrhodamine (TAMRA), as the acceptor. The sensor could detect the perfectly matched target, in the background of the mismatched target or other oligonucleotides of random sequences. The detection limit of this sensor towards perfectly matched target was calculated to be 120 femtomoles, with no photobleaching. Oligonucleotide sensors of such design demonstrate high sensitivity and specificity.

Highly selective detection of methanol over ethanol by a handheld gas sensor.

Project description:Methanol poisoning causes blindness, organ failure or even death when recognized too late. Currently, there is no methanol detector for quick diagnosis by breath analysis or for screening of laced beverages. Typically, chemical sensors cannot distinguish methanol from the much higher ethanol background. Here, we present an inexpensive and handheld sensor for highly selective methanol detection. It consists of a separation column (Tenax) separating methanol from interferants like ethanol, acetone or hydrogen, as in gas chromatography, and a chemoresistive gas sensor (Pd-doped SnO2 nanoparticles) to quantify the methanol concentration. This way, methanol is measured within 2?min from 1 to 1000 ppm without interference of much higher ethanol levels (up to 62,000 ppm). As a proof-of-concept, we reliably measure methanol concentrations in spiked breath samples and liquor. This could enable the realization of highly selective sensors in emerging applications such as breath analysis or air quality monitoring.

Highly Sensitive and Selective Spiropyran-Based Sensor for Copper(II) Quantification.

Project description:The metal-binding capabilities of the spiropyran family of molecular switches have been explored for several purposes from sensing to optical circuits. Metal-selective sensing has been of great interest for applications ranging from environmental assays to industrial quality control, but sensitive metal detection for field-based assays has been elusive. In this work, we demonstrate colorimetric copper sensing at low micromolar levels. Dimethylamine-functionalized spiropyran (SP1) was synthesized and its metal-sensing properties were investigated using UV-vis spectrophotometry. The formation of a metal complex between SP1 and Cu2+ was associated with a color change that can be observed by the naked eye as low as ≈6 μM and the limit of detection was found to be 0.11 μM via UV-vis spectrometry. Colorimetric data showed linearity of response in a physiologically relevant range (0-20 μM Cu2+) with high selectivity for Cu2+ ions over biologically and environmentally relevant metals such as Na+, K+, Mn2+, Ca2+, Zn2+, Co2+, Mg2+, Ni2+, Fe3+, Cd2+, and Pb2+. Since the color change accompanying SP1-Cu2+ complex formation could be detected at low micromolar concentrations, SP1 could be viable for field testing of trace Cu2+ ions.

A Highly Sensitive and Selective Isobutyraldehyde Sensor Based on Nanosized Sm2O3 Particles.

Project description:A highly sensitive and selective sensor for isobutyraldehyde (IBD) is demonstrated based on intensive cataluminescence (CTL) emission from the surface of nanosized Sm2O3 particles. The characteristics and optimum conditions for the CTL sensor, including the working temperature, wavelength, and flow rate, were investigated in detail. Under the optimized experimental conditions, the CTL intensity varied linearly with the concentration of IBD, in the two-order-of-magnitude range of 0.015-3.9??g/mL, with a correlation coefficient (r) of 0.99991 and a limit of detection (LOD), at a signal-to-noise ratio (S/N?=?3) of 4.6?ng/mL. The sensor was quite specific: butyraldehyde, methanol, ethanol, acetone, formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, benzene, ethylbenzene, and cumene could not produce significant CTL intensities; specifically, butyraldehyde, ethanol, acetone, and acetaldehyde produced low CTL intensities, with values that were 3.8%, 2.8%, 0.60%, and 0.57% that of IBD. As a test of sensor stability, we found that the relative standard deviation (RSD) of 30 measurements of the CTL at an IBD concentration of 1.6??g/mL within a period of 72?h was 2.2%, indicating good stability and long service life of the sensor. The sensor was tested against spiked samples containing IBD, and recoveries between 89.7% and 97.4% were obtained with an RSD of 6.1%-8.6%. The performance of the sensor indicated its utility for practical sample analysis.

Tunable Surface Properties of Aluminum Oxide Nanoparticles from Highly Hydrophobic to Highly Hydrophilic.

Project description:The formation of materials with tunable wettability is important for applications ranging from antifouling to waterproofing surfaces. We report the use of various low-cost and nonhazardous hydrocarbon materials to tune the surface properties of aluminum oxide nanoparticles (NPs) from superhydrophilic to superhydrophobic through covalent functionalization. The hydrocarbon surfaces are compared with a fluorinated surface for wettability and surface energy properties. The role of NPs' hydrophobicity on their dynamic interfacial behavior at the oil-water interface and their ability to form stable emulsions is also explored. The spray-coated NPs provide textured surfaces (regardless of functionality), with water contact angles (θ) of 10-150° based on their surface functionality. The superhydrophobic NPs are able to reduce the interfacial tension of various oil-water interfaces by behaving as surfactants.

Ultrasensitive and highly selective graphene-based single yarn for use in wearable gas sensor.

Project description:Electric components based on fibers or textiles have been investigated owing to their potential applications in wearable devices. High performance on response to gas, drape-ability and washing durability are of important for gas sensors based on fiber substrates. In this report, we demonstrate the bendable and washable electronic textile (e-textile) gas sensors composed of reduced graphene oxides (RGOs) using commercially available yarn and molecular glue through an electrostatic self-assembly. The e-textile gas sensor possesses chemical durability to several detergent washing treatments and mechanical stability under 1,000 bending tests at an extreme bending radius of 1?mm as well as a high response to NO2 gas at room temperature with selectivity to other gases such as acetone, ethanol, ethylene, and CO2.
