Project description:Quantum-mechanical evolution of systems with periodic time-modulated Hamiltonians is often described by effective interactions. Such average Hamiltonians, calculated as few terms of an expansion in powers of the interaction, are sometimes difficult to relate to experimental observations. We propose a frequency-domain approach to this problem, which offers certain advantages and produces an approximate solution for the density matrix, better linked to measurable quantities. The formalism is suitable for calculating the intensities of narrowed spectral peaks. Fast magic-angle-spinning NMR spectra of solids are used to experimentally illustrate the method.

Project description:We present a comprehensive analysis of a frequency multiplexed phase-measuring φ-OTDR sensor platform. The system uses a train of frequency-shifted pulses to increase the average power injected into the fiber and provide a diversity of uncorrelated Rayleigh backscattering measurements. Through a combination of simulations, numerical analysis, and experimental measurements, we show that this approach not only enables lower noise and mitigates interference fading, but also improves the sensor linearity. We investigate the sensor dependence on the length of the pulse train and characterize the sensor performance as a function of range, demonstrating operation from 1 to 50 km. Despite its relative simplicity, this platform enables state-of-the-art performance, including low crosstalk, high linearity, and a minimum detectable strain of only 0.6 p[Formula: see text] in a 10 km fiber with 10 m spatial resolution and a bandwidth of 5 kHz.

Project description:BeiDou system navigation messages are modulated with a secondary NH (Neumann-Hoffman) code of 1 kbps, where frequent bit transitions limit the coherent integration time to 1 millisecond. Therefore, a bit synchronization algorithm is necessary to obtain bit edges and NH code phases. In order to realize bit synchronization for BeiDou weak signals with large frequency deviation, a bit synchronization algorithm based on differential coherent and maximum likelihood is proposed. Firstly, a differential coherent approach is used to remove the effect of frequency deviation, and the differential delay time is set to be a multiple of bit cycle to remove the influence of NH code. Secondly, the maximum likelihood function detection is used to improve the detection probability of weak signals. Finally, Monte Carlo simulations are conducted to analyze the detection performance of the proposed algorithm compared with a traditional algorithm under the CN0s of 20~40 dB-Hz and different frequency deviations. The results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the traditional method with a frequency deviation of 50 Hz. This algorithm can remove the effect of BeiDou NH code effectively and weaken the influence of frequency deviation. To confirm the feasibility of the proposed algorithm, real data tests are conducted. The proposed algorithm is suitable for BeiDou weak signal bit synchronization with large frequency deviation.

Project description:Fiber-optical networks are a crucial telecommunication infrastructure in society. Wavelength division multiplexing allows for transmitting parallel data streams over the fiber bandwidth, and coherent detection enables the use of sophisticated modulation formats and electronic compensation of signal impairments. Optical frequency combs can replace the multiple lasers used for the different wavelength channels. Beyond multiplexing, it has been suggested that the broadband phase coherence of frequency combs could simplify the receiver scheme by performing joint reception and processing of several wavelength channels, but an experimental validation in a fiber transmission experiment remains elusive. Here we demonstrate and quantify joint reception and processing of several wavelength channels in a full transmission system. We demonstrate two joint processing schemes; one that reduces the phase-tracking complexity and one that increases the transmission performance.

Project description:Cerebrovascular reactivity (CVR) is a prognostic indicator of cerebrovascular health. Estimating CVR from endogenous end-tidal carbon dioxide (CO2) fluctuation and MRI signal recorded under resting state can be difficult due to the poor signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of signals. Thus, we aimed to improve the method of estimating CVR from end-tidal CO2 and MRI signals. We proposed a coherence weighted general linear model (CW-GLM) to estimate CVR from the Fourier coefficients weighted by the signal coherence in frequency domain, which confers two advantages. First, it requires no signal alignment in time domain, which simplifies experimental methods. Second, it limits the GLM analysis within the frequency band where CO2 and MRI signals are highly correlated, which automatically suppresses noise and nuisance signals. We compared the performance of our method with time-domain GLM (TD-GLM) and frequency-domain GLM (FD-GLM) in both synthetic and in-vivo data; wherein we calculated CVR from signals recorded under both resting state and sinusoidal stimulus. In synthetic data, CW-GLM has a remarkable performance on CVR estimation from narrow band signals with a mean-absolute error of 0.7 % (gray matter) and 1.2 % (white matter), which was lower than all the other methods. Meanwhile, CW-GLM maintains a comparable performance on CVR estimation from resting signals, with a mean-absolute error of 4.1 % (gray matter) and 8 % (white matter). The superior performance was maintained across the 36 in-vivo measurements, with CW-GLM exhibiting limits of agreement of -16.7 % - 9.5 % between CVR calculated from the resting and sinusoidal CO2 paradigms which was 12 % - 209 % better than current time-domain methods. Evaluating of the cross-coherence spectrum revealed highest signal coherence within the frequency band from 0.01 Hz to 0.05 Hz, which overlaps with previously recommended frequency band (0.02 Hz to 0.04 Hz) for CVR analysis. Our data demonstrates that CW-GLM can work as a self-adaptive band-pass filter to improve CVR robustness, while also avoiding the need for signal temporal alignment.

Project description:BACKGROUND: Constructing predictive dynamic models of interacting signalling networks remains one of the great challenges facing systems biology. While detailed dynamical data exists about individual pathways, the task of combining such data without further lengthy experimentation is highly nontrivial. The communicating links between pathways, implicitly assumed to be unimportant and thus excluded, are precisely what become important in the larger system and must be reinstated. To maintain the delicate phase relationships between signals, signalling networks demand accurate dynamical parameters, but parameters optimised in isolation and under varying conditions are unlikely to remain optimal when combined. The computational burden of estimating parameters increases exponentially with increasing system size, so it is crucial to find precise and efficient ways of measuring the behaviour of systems, in order to re-use existing work. RESULTS: Motivated by the above, we present a new frequency domain-based systematic analysis technique that attempts to address the challenge of network assembly by defining a rigorous means to quantify the behaviour of stochastic systems. As our focus we construct a novel coupled oscillatory model of p53, NF-kB and the mammalian cell cycle, based on recent experimentally verified mathematical models. Informed by online databases of protein networks and interactions, we distilled their key elements into simplified models containing the most significant parts. Having coupled these systems, we constructed stochastic models for use in our frequency domain analysis. We used our new technique to investigate the crosstalk between the components of our model and measure the efficacy of certain network-based heuristic measures. CONCLUSIONS: We find that the interactions between the networks we study are highly complex and not intuitive: (i) points of maximum perturbation do not necessarily correspond to points of maximum proximity to influence; (ii) increased coupling strength does not necessarily increase perturbation; (iii) different perturbations do not necessarily sum and (iv) overall, susceptibility to perturbation is amplitude and frequency dependent and cannot easily be predicted by heuristic measures.Our methodology is particularly relevant for oscillatory systems, though not limited to these, and is most revealing when applied to the results of stochastic simulation. The technique is able to characterise precisely the distance in behaviour between different models, different systems and different parts within the same system. It can also measure the difference between different simulation algorithms used on the same system and can be used to inform the choice of dynamic parameters. By measuring crosstalk between subsystems it can also indicate mechanisms by which such systems may be controlled in experiments and therapeutics. We have thus found our technique of frequency domain analysis to be a valuable benchmark systems-biological tool.

Project description:Individual neurons express receptors for several different growth factors that influence the survival, growth, neurotransmitter phenotype, and other properties of the cell. Although there has been considerable progress in elucidating the molecular signal transduction pathways and physiological responses of neurons and other cells to individual growth factors, little is known about if and how signals from different growth factors are integrated within a neuron. In this study, we determined the interactive effects of nerve growth factor, insulin-like growth factor 1, and epidermal growth factor on the activation status of downstream kinase cascades and transcription factors, cell survival, and neurotransmitter production in neural cells that express receptors for all three growth factors. We document considerable differences in the quality and quantity of intracellular signaling and eventual phenotypic responses that are dependent on whether cells are exposed to a single or multiple growth factors. Dual stimulations that generated the greatest antagonistic or synergistic actions, compared with a theoretically neutral summation of their two activities, yielded the largest eventual change of neuronal phenotype indicated by the ability of the cell to produce norepinephrine or resist oxidative stress. Combined activation of insulin-like growth factor 1 and epidermal growth factor receptors was particularly notable for antagonistic interactions at some levels of signal transduction and norepinephrine production, but potentiation at other levels of signaling and cytoprotection. Our findings suggest that in true physiological settings where multiple growth factors are present, activation of one receptor type may result in molecular and phenotypic responses that are different from that observed in typical experimental paradigms in which cells are exposed to only a single growth factor at a time.

Project description:Optical frequency combs have the potential to revolutionize terabit communications1. Generation of Kerr combs in nonlinear microresonators2 represents a particularly promising option3 enabling line spacings of tens of GHz. However, such combs may exhibit strong phase noise4-6, which has made high-speed data transmission impossible up to now. Here we demonstrate that systematic adjustment of pump conditions for low phase noise4,7-9 enables coherent data transmission with advanced modulation formats that pose stringent requirements on the spectral purity of the comb. In a first experiment, we encode a data stream of 392 Gbit/s on a Kerr comb using quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) and 16-state quadrature amplitude modulation (16QAM). A second experiment demonstrates feedback-stabilization of the comb and transmission of a 1.44 Tbit/s data stream over up to 300 km. The results show that Kerr combs meet the highly demanding requirements of coherent communications and thus offer an attractive solution towards chip-scale terabit/s transceivers.

Project description:Neuromorphic photonics has relied so far either solely on coherent or Wavelength-Division-Multiplexing (WDM) designs for enabling dot-product or vector-by-matrix multiplication, which has led to an impressive variety of architectures. Here, we go a step further and employ WDM for enriching the layout with parallelization capabilities across fan-in and/or weighting stages instead of serving the computational purpose and present, for the first time, a neuron architecture that combines coherent optics with WDM towards a multifunctional programmable neural network platform. Our reconfigurable platform accommodates four different operational modes over the same photonic hardware, supporting multi-layer, convolutional, fully-connected and power-saving layers. We validate mathematically the successful performance along all four operational modes, taking into account crosstalk, channel spacing and spectral dependence of the critical optical elements, concluding to a reliable operation with MAC relative error [Formula: see text].

Project description:Optical multi-dimensional coherent spectroscopy is a powerful technique for studying the structure, properties and ultrafast dynamics of atoms, molecules, semiconductor materials and complex systems. Current implementations of multi-dimensional coherent spectroscopy have long acquisition times and/or limited spectral resolution. In addition, most of the techniques utilize complex geometries or phase cycling schemes to isolate non-linear signals. We demonstrate a novel approach of using frequency combs to perform rapid, high resolution and background free multi-dimensional coherent spectroscopy of semiconductor materials. Our approach is inspired by dual-comb spectroscopy, which has been proven to be a versatile tool for obtaining one dimensional absorption spectra with high resolution in a short acquisition time. We demonstrate the method using a GaAs multi-quantum well sample.
