Project description:In this work, a numerical solution for the extrapolation problem of a discrete set of n values of an unknown analytic function is developed. The proposed method is based on a novel numerical scheme for the rapid calculation of higher order derivatives, exhibiting high accuracy, with error magnitude of O(10-100) or less. A variety of integrated radial basis functions are utilized for the solution, as well as variable precision arithmetic for the calculations. Multiple alterations in the function's direction, with no curvature or periodicity information specified, are efficiently foreseen. Interestingly, the proposed procedure can be extended in multiple dimensions. The attained extrapolation spans are greater than two times the given domain length. The significance of the approximation errors is comprehensively analyzed and reported, for 5832 test cases.

Project description:The natural auxiliary function (NAF) approach is an approximation to decrease the size of the auxiliary basis set required for quantum chemical calculations utilizing the density fitting technique. It has been proven efficient to speed up various correlation models, such as second-order Møller-Plesset (MP2) theory and coupled-cluster methods. Here, for the first time, we discuss the theory of analytic derivatives for correlation methods employing the NAF approximation on the example of MP2. A detailed algorithm for the gradient calculation with the NAF approximation is proposed in the framework of the method of Lagrange multipliers. To assess the effect of the NAF approximation on gradients and optimized geometric parameters, a series of benchmark calculations on small and medium-sized systems was performed. Our results demonstrate that, for MP2, sufficiently accurate gradients and geometries can be achieved with a moderate time reduction of 15-20% for both small and medium-sized molecules.

Project description:An increasing number of studies have identified spatial differences in breast cancer survival. However little is known about whether the structure and dynamics of this spatial inequality are consistent across a region. This study aims to evaluate the spatially varying nature of predictors of spatial inequality in relative survival for women diagnosed with breast cancer across Queensland, Australia. All Queensland women aged less than 90 years diagnosed with invasive breast cancer from 1997 to 2007 and followed up to the end of 2008 were extracted from linked Queensland Cancer Registry and BreastScreen Queensland data. Bayesian relative survival models were fitted using various model structures (a spatial regression model, a varying coefficient model and a finite mixture of regressions model) to evaluate the relative excess risk of breast cancer, with the use of Markov chain Monte Carlo computation. The spatially varying coefficient models revealed that some covariate effects may not be constant across the geographic regions of the study. The overall spatial patterns showed lower survival among women living in more remote areas, and higher survival among the urbanised south-east corner. Notwithstanding this, the spatial survival pattern for younger women contrasted with that for older women as well as single women. This complex spatial interplay may be indicative of different factors impacting on survival patterns for these women.

Project description:BackgroundWe present the health inequalities analytic approach used by the Saskatoon Health Region to examine health equity. Our aim was to develop a method that will enable health regions to prioritize action on health inequalities.MethodsData from admissions to hospital, physician billing, reportable diseases, vital statistics and childhood immunizations in the city of Saskatoon were analyzed for the years ranging from 1995 to 2011. Data were aggregated to the dissemination area level. The Pampalon deprivation index was used as the measure of socioeconomic status. We calculated annual rates per 1000 people for each outcome. Rate ratios, rate differences, area-level concentration curves and area-level concentration coefficients quantified inequality. An Inequalities Prioritization Matrix was developed to prioritize action for the outcomes showing the greatest inequality. The outcomes measured were cancer, intentional self-harm, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, mental illness, heart disease, diabetes, injury, stroke, chlamydia, tuberculosis, gonorrhea, hepatitis C, high birth weight, low birth weight, teen abortion, teen pregnancy, infant mortality and all-cause mortality.ResultsAccording to the Inequalities Prioritization Matrix, injuries and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease were the first and second priorities, respectively, that needed to be addressed related to inequalities in admissions to hospital. For physician billing, mental disorders and diabetes were high-priority areas. Differences in teen pregnancy and all-cause mortality were the most unequal in the vital statistics data. For communicable diseases, hepatitis C was the highest priority.InterpretationOur findings show that health inequalities exist at the local level and that a method can be developed to prioritize action on these inequalities. Policies should consider health inequalities and adopt population-based and targeted actions to reduce inequalities.
