Project description:The present study investigates some novel categorical properties of soft sets. By combining categorical theory with soft set theory, a categorical framework of soft set theory is established. It is proved that the category SFun of soft sets and soft functions has equalizers, finite products, pullbacks, and exponential properties. It is worth mentioning that we find that SFun is both a topological construct and Cartesian closed. The category SRel of soft sets and Z-soft set relations is also characterized, which shows the existence of the zero objects, biproducts, additive identities, injective objects, projective objects, injective hulls, and projective covers. Finally, by constructing proper adjoint situations, some intrinsic connections between SFun and SRel are established.

Project description:Mutual information (MI) is a powerful method for detecting relationships between data sets. There are accurate methods for estimating MI that avoid problems with "binning" when both data sets are discrete or when both data sets are continuous. We present an accurate, non-binning MI estimator for the case of one discrete data set and one continuous data set. This case applies when measuring, for example, the relationship between base sequence and gene expression level, or the effect of a cancer drug on patient survival time. We also show how our method can be adapted to calculate the Jensen-Shannon divergence of two or more data sets.

Project description:We apply the classical theory of hyperrings to vague soft sets to derive the concepts of vague soft hyperrings, vague soft hyperideals, and vague soft hyperring homomorphism. The properties and structural characteristics of these concepts are also studied and discussed. Furthermore, the relationship between the concepts introduced here and the corresponding concepts in classical hyperring theory and soft hyperring theory is studied and investigated.

Project description:Ethnic differences in dementia are increasingly recognized in epidemiological measures and diagnostic biomarkers. Nonetheless, ethnic diversity remains limited in many study populations. Here, we provide insights into ethnic diversity in open-access neuroimaging dementia data sets. Data sets comprising dementia populations with available data on ethnicity were included. Statistical analyses of sample and effect sizes were based on the Cochrane Handbook. Nineteen databases were included, with 17 studies of healthy groups or a combination of diagnostic groups if breakdown was unavailable and 12 of mild cognitive impairment and dementia groups. Combining all studies on dementia patients, the largest ethnic group was Caucasian (20 547 participants), with the next most common being Afro-Caribbean (1958), followed by Asian (1211). The smallest effect size detectable within the Caucasian group was 0.03, compared to Afro-Caribbean (0.1) and Asian (0.13). Our findings quantify the lack of ethnic diversity in openly available dementia data sets. More representative data would facilitate the development and validation of biomarkers relevant across ethnicities.

Project description:There has been an explosion of ideas in soft robotics over the past decade, resulting in unprecedented opportunities for end effector design. Soft robot hands offer benefits of low-cost, compliance, and customized design, with the promise of dexterity and robustness. The space of opportunities is vast and exciting. However, new tools are needed to understand the capabilities of such manipulators and to facilitate manipulation planning with soft manipulators that exhibit free-form deformations. To address this challenge, we introduce a sampling based approach to discover and model continuous families of manipulations for soft robot hands. We give an overview of the soft foam robots in production in our lab and describe novel algorithms developed to characterize manipulation families for such robots. Our approach consists of sampling a space of manipulation actions, constructing Gaussian Mixture Model representations covering successful regions, and refining the results to create continuous successful regions representing the manipulation family. The space of manipulation actions is very high dimensional; we consider models with and without dimensionality reduction and provide a rigorous approach to compare models across different dimensions by comparing coverage of an unbiased test dataset in the full dimensional parameter space. Results show that some dimensionality reduction is typically useful in populating the models, but without our technique, the amount of dimensionality reduction to use is difficult to predict ahead of time and can depend on the hand and task. The models we produce can be used to plan and carry out successful, robust manipulation actions and to compare competing robot hand designs.

Project description:Jumping is an important locomotion function to extend navigation range, overcome obstacles, and adapt to unstructured environments. In that sense, continuous jumping and direction adjustability can be essential properties for terrestrial robots with multimodal locomotion. However, only few soft jumping robots can achieve rapid continuous jumping and controlled turning locomotion for obstacle crossing. Here, we present an electrohydrostatically driven tethered legless soft jumping robot capable of rapid, continuous, and steered jumping based on a soft electrohydrostatic bending actuator. This 1.1 g and 6.5 cm tethered soft jumping robot is able to achieve a jumping height of 7.68 body heights and a continuous forward jumping speed of 6.01 body lengths per second. Combining two actuator units, it can achieve rapid turning with a speed of 138.4° per second. The robots are also demonstrated to be capable of skipping across a multitude of obstacles. This work provides a foundation for the application of electrohydrostatic actuation in soft robots for agile and fast multimodal locomotion.

Project description:The overall assessment of non-cryptographic functions is very complex and there is not a widely used benchmark. These data have been collected and created as a benchmark for testing non-cryptographic hash functions. It is made up of eight dataset which comes from two different groups, real and synthetic data sources. The objective when selecting and generating the data has been redundancy and structures present in real-world scenarios. These data have been used for benchmarking non-cryptographic hash functions in [1] and [2].

Project description:The causes of epilepsy are incompletely understood, and rodent models enable valuable mechanistic investigations. Synchronized video-electroencephalography (video-EEG) data is critical for clinical assessment of seizure events and is similarly important in basic research on epilepsy, but commercial packages offer limited flexibility and are costly. We've developed and here make freely available OpenVEEG, fully open-source software for millisecond-synchronized video-EEG. With only hardware costs, the system price is approximately one-fifth that of a commercial system with similar capabilities. It is straightforward to use, readily extensible, and records robustly on the time scale of weeks.
