Project description:The structures and magnetic properties of the arsenic- and selenium-ligated dysprosium single-molecule magnets (SMMs) [Cp'3Dy(AsH2Mes)] (3-Dy), [(η5-Cp'2Dy){μ-As(H)Mes}]3 (4-Dy), [Li(thf)4]2[(η5-Cp'2Dy)3(μ3-AsMes)3Li] ([Li(thf)4]2[5-Dy]), and [(η5-Cp'2Dy){μ-SeMes}]3 (6-Dy) are described. The arsenic-ligated complexes 4-Dy and 5-Dy are the first SMMs to feature ligands with metalloid elements as the donor atoms. The arsenide-ligated complex 4-Dy and the selenolate-ligated complex 6-Dy show large anisotropy barriers in the region of 250 cm-1 in zero d.c. field, increasing to 300 cm-1 upon 5% magnetic dilution. Theoretical studies reveal that thermal relaxation in these SMMs occurs via the second-excited Kramers' doublet. In contrast, the arsinidene-ligated SMM 5-Dy gives a much smaller barrier of 23 cm-1, increasing to 35 cm-1 upon dilution. The field-dependence of the magnetization for 4-Dy and 5-Dy at 1.8 K show unusual plateaus around 10 kOe, which is due to the dominance of arsenic-mediated exchange over the dipolar exchange. The effects of the exchange interactions are more pronounced in 5-Dy, which is a consequence of a small but significant increase in the covalent contribution to the predominantly ionic dysprosium-arsenic bonds. Whereas the magnetically non-dilute dysprosium SMMs show only very narrow magnetization versus field hysteresis loops at 1.8 K, the impact of magnetic dilution is dramatic, with butterfly-shaped loops being observed up to 5.4 K in the case of 4-Dy. Our findings suggest that ligands with heavier p-block element donor atoms have considerable potential to be developed more widely for applications in molecular magnetism.

Project description:A novel method to achieve an overlapping illusion without any negative refraction index material is introduced with the help of the optic-null medium (ONM) designed by an extremely stretching spatial transformation. Unlike the previous methods to achieve such an optical illusion by transformation optics (TO), our method can achieve a power combination and reshape the radiation pattern at the same time. Unlike the overlapping illusion with some negative refraction index material, our method is not sensitive to the loss of the materials. Other advantages over existing methods are discussed. Numerical simulations are given to verify the performance of the proposed devices.

Project description:A series of dysprosium(iii) metallocenium salts, [Dy(CpiPr4R)2][B(C6F5)4] (R = H (1), Me (2), Et (3), iPr (4)), was synthesized by reaction of DyI3 with the corresponding known NaCpiPr4R (R = H, iPr) and novel NaCpiPr4R (R = Me, Et) salts at high temperature, followed by iodide abstraction with [H(SiEt3)2][B(C6F5)4]. Variation of the substituents in this series results in substantial changes in molecular structure, with more sterically-encumbering cyclopentadienyl ligands promoting longer Dy-C distances and larger Cp-Dy-Cp angles. Dc and ac magnetic susceptibility data reveal that these structural changes have a considerable impact on the magnetic relaxation behavior and operating temperature of each compound. In particular, the magnetic relaxation barrier increases as the Dy-C distance decreases and the Cp-Dy-Cp angle increases. An overall 45 K increase in the magnetic blocking temperature is observed across the series, with compounds 2-4 exhibiting the highest 100 s blocking temperatures yet reported for a single-molecule magnet. Compound 2 possesses the highest operating temperature of the series with a 100 s blocking temperature of 62 K. Concomitant increases in the effective relaxation barrier and the maximum magnetic hysteresis temperature are observed, with 2 displaying a barrier of 1468 cm-1 and open magnetic hysteresis as high as 72 K at a sweep rate of 3.1 mT s-1. Magneto-structural correlations are discussed with the goal of guiding the synthesis of future high operating temperature DyIII metallocenium single-molecule magnets.

Project description:Osteoarthritis (OA) is a prevalent joint disease primarily induced by overstrain, leading to disability and significantly impacting patients' quality of life. However, current OA studies lack an ideal in vitro model, which can recapitulate the high peripheral strain of the joint and precisely model the disease onset process. In this paper, we propose a novel cartilage-on-a-chip platform that incorporates a biohybrid hydrogel comprising Neodymium (NdFeB)/Poly-GelMA-HAMA remote magneto-control hydrogel film. This platform facilitates chondrocyte culture and stress loading, enabling the investigation of chondrocytes under various stress stimuli. The Neodymium (NdFeB)/Poly-GelMA-HAMA hydrogel film exhibits magneto-responsive shape-transition behavior, further dragging the chondrocytes cultured in hydrogels under magnetic stimulation. It was investigated that inflammation-related genes and proteins in chondrocytes are changed with mechanical stress stimulation in the cartilage-on-a-chip. Especially, MMP-13 and the proportion of collagen secretion are upregulated, showing a phenotype similar to that of real human osteoarthritis. Therefore, we believed that this cartilage-on-a-chip platform provides a desired in vitro model for osteoarthritis, which is of great significance in disease research and drug development.

Project description:We demonstrate magneto-optical (MO) polarization transformation due to surface plasmons in CoPt perpendicular magnetic films in the polar Kerr geometry. An extraordinary Kerr rotation angle (θK = ± 88.9°) that almost reaches the upper limit of polarization is produced in the attenuated total reflection (Kretschmann) configuration. P-polarized incident radiation is almost transformed upon reflection to s-polarized radiation, which may be out of phase depending on whether the magnetization of CoPt is up or down. Moreover, the reflected intensity may be drastically modulated by applying an external magnetic field. The reflectivity goes almost to zero in the demagnetized state and increases with increasing external magnetic field. This drastic optical response is attributed to the MO destructive interference produced by the subwavelength magnetic domain structure.

Project description:We recently found only weak correlations between the susceptibility to various visual illusions. However, we observed strong correlations among different variants of an illusion, suggesting that the visual space of illusions includes several illusion-specific factors. Here, we specifically examined how factors for the vertical-horizontal, Müller-Lyer, and Ponzo illusions relate to each other. We measured the susceptibility to each illusion separately and to combinations of two illusions, which we refer to as a merged illusion; for example, we tested the Müller-Lyer illusion and the vertical-horizontal illusion, as well as a merged version of both illusions. We used an adjustment procedure in two experiments with 306 and 98 participants, respectively. Using path analyses, correlations, and exploratory factor analyses, we found that the susceptibility to a merged illusion is well predicted from the susceptibilities to the individual illusions. We suggest that there are illusion-specific factors that, by independent combinations, represent the whole visual structure underlying illusions.

Project description:We present active manipulation of the structural vibrations of an elastic body to generate an acoustic illusion. The resultant illusion misrepresents the nature, size and number of objects in the exterior acoustic domain. We demonstrate our technique, herein termed active structural acoustic illusion, using an elastic cylindrical shell. The radial motion of the shell at its cavity resonance frequencies is actively modified using localised mechanical forces. Acoustic illusions are generated to resemble the scattered acoustic field by one or more rigid cylinders of different size and location.

Project description:In the present work, the magneto-mechanical coupling in magneto-active elastomers is investigated from two different modeling perspectives: a micro-continuum and a particle-interaction approach. Since both strategies differ significantly in their basic assumptions and the resolution of the problem under investigation, they are introduced in a concise manner and their capabilities are illustrated by means of representative examples. To motivate the application of these strategies within a hybrid multiscale framework for magneto-active elastomers, their interchangeability is then examined in a systematic comparison of the model predictions with regard to the magneto-deformation of chain-like helical structures in an elastomer surrounding. The presented results show a remarkable agreement of both modeling approaches and help to provide an improved understanding of the interactions in magneto-active elastomers with chain-like microstructures.
