Validation in Swedish of Sydney swallow questionnaire.

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to translate and adapt the Sydney Swallow Questionnaire to Swedish conditions and to evaluate the validity and test-retest reliability of the Swedish translation in patients with oropharyngeal dysphagia and in healthy controls. METHODS: The validation included 20 patients with swallowing problems and 20 controls matched in age and sex. Patients were assigned a Dysphagia Outcome and Severity Scale. Content, construct, discriminant and predictive validity and test-retest reliability were evaluated. RESULTS: The Swedish version of the Sydney Swallow Questionnaire was close to the original version, easy to fill in, and well accepted. The form fulfilled the criteria for content, construct, discriminant and predictive validity and test-retest reliability. CONCLUSIONS: The Swedish translation of the Sydney Swallow Questionnaire proved to be a valid instrument to assess dysphagia symptoms and could be used in clinical settings.

Project description:BackgroundPsychosocial risk factors in the home may impair children's health and development and increase the risk of maltreatment. The Safe Environment for Every Kid (SEEK) model was developed to provide pediatric primary care professionals with a structured way to identify common psychosocial problems. The SEEK model includes use of the Parent Screening Questionnaire (SEEK-PSQ) at routine preventive child health visits, discussion with parents about their responses and, when indicated, referral to relevant services. The SEEK-PSQ has not previously been available in Swedish. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the psychometric properties of an adapted Swedish version of the SEEK-PSQ (PSQ-S).MethodsThis study is part of a cluster-randomised controlled trial of SEEK in the Swedish child health services. To validate the PSQ-S, parents (n = 852) with children 0-18 months of age were invited to complete a survey including the PSQ-S as well as evidence-based standardized instruments for the targeted psychosocial risk factors: economic worries, depressive symptoms, parental stress, alcohol misuse and intimate partner violence (IPV). Baseline data from 611 (72%) parents were analysed regarding sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV) and negative predictive value (NPV) for each risk factor.ResultsAs a whole, the PSQ-S had a sensitivity of 93%, specificity of 52%, PPV of 67% and NPV of 87%. For mothers and fathers combined, sensitivity was 80% for economic worries, 89% for depressive symptoms, 78% for parental stress, 47% for intimate partner violence (IPV) and 70% for alcohol misuse. Specificity was highest for IPV and alcohol misuse (91%) and lowest for depressive symptoms (64%). NPV values were high (81-99%) and PPV values were low to moderate (22-69%) for the targeted problems. Sensitivity was higher for mothers compared to fathers for economic worries, depressive symptoms and IPV. This difference was particularly evident for IPV (52% for mothers, 27% for fathers).ConclusionThe SEEK-PSQ-S demonstrated good psychometric properties for identifying economic worries, depressive symptoms, parental stress and alcohol misuse but low sensitivity for IPV. The PSQ-S as a whole showed high sensitivity and NPV, indicating that most parents with or without the targeted psychosocial risk factors were correctly identified.Trial registrationISRCTN registry, study record 14,429,952 ( https://doi.org/10.1186/ISRCTN14429952 ) Registration date 27/05/2020.

Project description:BackgroundThe main aim of post-mastectomy breast reconstruction is to improve the patient's quality of life, which makes high-quality and validated patient-reported outcome measurements essential. None of the established instruments include evaluation of donor-site morbidity, such as impact on upper extremity and back function, when a latissimus dorsi (LD) muscle is used; and BREAST-Q LD questionnaire was therefore recently developed for this purpose. The aim of this study was to translate into Swedish and culturally adapt the BREAST-Q LD questionnaire's two subscales, appearance and function, and perform a psychometric evaluation of the subscales in a Swedish population of patients.MethodsThis was a cross-sectional study. The questionnaire was translated according to established guidelines. The questionnaires were sent to all patients operated using an LD flap between 2007 and 2017. Internal consistency was assessed using Cronbach's α. Inter-item correlations and corrected item-total correlations were calculated using the Pearson's correlation coefficient. Convergent validity was evaluated by comparing the BREAST-Q LD questionnaire to the Western Ontario Osteoarthritis of the Shoulder Index, using the Spearman correlation coefficient. Test-retest reliability was tested with intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs), and the coefficient of variation and Bland-Altman plots were drawn. Floor and ceiling effects were calculated. Known-group validation was tested by comparing scores from the patients and from normal controls using the Mann-Whitney U-test and by calculating eta squared effect size.ResultsThe questionnaires were sent to 176 eligible patients and 125 responded (71%). The patients had been operated a mean of 6.6 years ago, and most (92%) had previous radiation. Internal consistency was satisfactory for both subscales. The correlation coefficients between questions were r > 0.30 for all items of both scales. The corrected item-total correlation coefficient ranged from 0.62 to 0.90. As hypothesised, the function scale was correlated with the WOOS "Physical symptoms" subscale. Reliability was adequate according to the ICCs. The ceiling effect threshold for the appearance scale was reached and that for the back scale was almost reached. There were significant differences between patients and controls, in the hypothesised direction.ConclusionsThe results of this study support a good internal consistency, convergent validity, test-retest reliability and known-group validation for the Swedish BREAST-Q LD questionnaire. However, it may be difficult to discriminate between patients with very mild and those with no symptoms using the appearance scale.Trial registrationClinicalTrials.Gov identifier NCT04526561.

Project description:Subjective questionnaires are informative in understanding the difficulties faced by patients with hearing loss. Our intent was to establish and validate a new questionnaire that encompasses situations emphasizing binaural hearing. The Spatial Hearing Questionnaire is a self-report assessment tool with eight subscales representing questions; pertaining to the perception of male, female, and children's voices; music in quiet; source localization; understanding speech in quiet; and understanding speech in noise.The Spatial Hearing Questionnaire, composed of 24 items, is scored from 0 to 100. It was administered to 142 subjects using one or two cochlear implants. Speech perception and localization abilities were measured, and the Speech, Spatial, and Other Qualities questionnaire was completed to evaluate validity of the questionnaire. Psychometric tests were performed to test the reliability and factor structure of the Spatial Hearing Questionnaire.Results showed high internal consistency reliability (Cronbach's alpha = 0.98) and good construct validity (correlations between the Spatial Hearing Questionnaire and other test measures, including the Speech, Spatial, and Other Qualities, were significant). A preliminary factor analysis revealed scores loaded on three factors, representing the following conditions: localization, speech in noise and music in quiet, and speech in quiet, explaining 64.9, 13.0, and 5.3% of the variance, respectively. Most of the questionnaire items (12/24) loaded onto the first factor that represents the subscale related to source localization. Mean scores on the Spatial Hearing Questionnaire were higher for subjects with bilateral cochlear implants than for subjects with a unilateral cochlear implant, consistent with other research and supporting construct validity.The Spatial Hearing Questionnaire is a reliable and valid questionnaire that can be completed independently by most patients in about 10 minutes. It is likely to be a valuable tool for clinicians and researchers to measure spatial hearing abilities.
