Project description:We introduce the set of quasi-Herglotz functions and demonstrate that it has properties useful in the modelling of non-passive systems. The linear space of quasi-Herglotz functions constitutes a natural extension of the convex cone of Herglotz functions. It consists of differences of Herglotz functions and we show that several of the important properties and modelling perspectives are inherited by the new set of quasi-Herglotz functions. In particular, this applies to their integral representations, the associated integral identities or sum rules (with adequate additional assumptions), their boundary values on the real axis and the associated approximation theory. Numerical examples are included to demonstrate the modelling of a non-passive gain medium formulated as a convex optimization problem, where the generating measure is modelled by using a finite expansion of B-splines and point masses.

Project description:Iterative image reconstruction (IIR) algorithms in computed tomography (CT) are based on algorithms for solving a particular optimization problem. Design of the IIR algorithm, therefore, is aided by knowledge of the solution to the optimization problem on which it is based. Often times, however, it is impractical to achieve accurate solution to the optimization of interest, which complicates design of IIR algorithms. This issue is particularly acute for CT with a limited angular-range scan, which leads to poorly conditioned system matrices and difficult to solve optimization problems. In this paper, we develop IIR algorithms which solve a certain type of optimization called convex feasibility. The convex feasibility approach can provide alternatives to unconstrained optimization approaches and at the same time allow for rapidly convergent algorithms for their solution-thereby facilitating the IIR algorithm design process.An accelerated version of the Chambolle-Pock (CP) algorithm is adapted to various convex feasibility problems of potential interest to IIR in CT. One of the proposed problems is seen to be equivalent to least-squares minimization, and two other problems provide alternatives to penalized, least-squares minimization.The accelerated CP algorithms are demonstrated on a simulation of circular fan-beam CT with a limited scanning arc of 144°. The CP algorithms are seen in the empirical results to converge to the solution of their respective convex feasibility problems.Formulation of convex feasibility problems can provide a useful alternative to unconstrained optimization when designing IIR algorithms for CT. The approach is amenable to recent methods for accelerating first-order algorithms which may be particularly useful for CT with limited angular-range scanning. The present paper demonstrates the methodology, and future work will illustrate its utility in actual CT application.

Project description:A convex code is a binary code generated by the pattern of intersections of a collection of open convex sets in some Euclidean space. Convex codes are relevant to neuroscience as they arise from the activity of neurons that have convex receptive fields. In this paper, we use algebraic methods to determine if a code is convex. Specifically, we use the neural ideal of a code, which is a generalization of the Stanley-Reisner ideal. Using the neural ideal together with its standard generating set, the canonical form, we provide algebraic signatures of certain families of codes that are non-convex. We connect these signatures to the precise conditions on the arrangement of sets that prevent the codes from being convex. Finally, we also provide algebraic signatures for some families of codes that are convex, including the class of intersection-complete codes. These results allow us to detect convexity and non-convexity in a variety of situations, and point to some interesting open questions.

Project description:It is commonly assumed that surfaces modify the properties of stable materials within the top few atomic layers of a bulk specimen only. Exploiting the polarization dependence of resonant elastic X-ray scattering to go beyond conventional diffraction and imaging techniques, we have determined the depth dependence of the full 3D spin structure of skyrmions-that is, topologically nontrivial whirls of the magnetization-below the surface of a bulk sample of Cu2OSeO3 We found that the skyrmions change exponentially from pure Néel- to pure Bloch-twisting over a distance of several hundred nanometers between the surface and the bulk, respectively. Though qualitatively consistent with theory, the strength of the Néel-twisting at the surface and the length scale of the variation observed experimentally exceed material-specific modeling substantially. In view of the exceptionally complete quantitative theoretical account of the magnetic rigidities and associated static and dynamic properties of skyrmions in Cu2OSeO3 and related materials, we conclude that subtle changes of the materials properties must exist at distances up to several hundred atomic layers into the bulk, which originate in the presence of the surface. This has far-reaching implications for the creation of skyrmions in surface-dominated systems and identifies, more generally, surface-induced gradual variations deep within a bulk material and their impact on tailored functionalities as an unchartered scientific territory.

Project description:To quantify the precision of in vivo cardiac DTI (cDTI) acquired with a spin echo, first- and second-order motion-compensated (M1 M2 ), convex optimized diffusion encoding (CODE) sequence.Free-breathing CODE-M1 M2 cDTI were acquired in healthy volunteers (N?=?10) at midsystole and diastole with 10 repeated acquisitions per phase. 95% confidence intervals of uncertainty in reconstructed diffusion tensor eigenvectors ( E?1, E?2, E?3), mean diffusivity (MD), fractional anisotropy (FA), and tensor Mode were measured using a bootstrapping approach. Trends in observed tensor metric uncertainty were evaluated as a function of scan duration, image SNR, cardiac phase, and bulk motion artifacts.For midsystolic scans including 5 signal averages (scan time: ?5?min), the median myocardial 95% confidence intervals of uncertainties were: E?1: 15.5?±?1.2°, E?2: 31.2?±?3.5°, E?3: 21.8?±?3.1°, MD: 0.38?±?0.02?×?10-3 mm2 /s, FA: 0.20?±?0.01, and Mode: 1.10?±?0.08. Uncertainty in all parameters increased for diastolic scans: E?1: 31.9?±?7.1°, E?2: 59.6?±?6.8°, E?3 : 40.5?±?6.4°, MD: 0.52?±?0.09?×?10-3 mm2 /s, FA: 0.23?±?0.01, and Mode: 1.57?±?0.11. Diastolic cDTI also reported higher MD (MDDIA ?=?1.91?±?0.34?×?10-3 mm2 /s vs. MDSYS ?=?1.58?±?0.09?×?10-3 mm2 /s, P?= 8?×?10-3 ) and lower FA values (FADIA ?=?0.32?±?0.06 vs. FASYS ?=?0.37?±?0.03, P?=?0.03) .cDTI precision improved with increasing nondiffusion-weighted (b?=?0) image SNR, but gains were minimal for SNR???25 (?10 averages). cDTI precision was also sensitive to intershot bulk motion artifacts, which led to better precision for midsystolic imaging.

Project description:Order Lysobacterales (earlier known Xanthomonadales ) is a taxonomically complex group of a large number of gamma-proteobacteria classified in two different families, namely Lysobacteraceae and Rhodanobacteraceae . Current taxonomy is largely based on classical approaches and is devoid of whole-genome information-based analysis. In the present study, we have taken all classified and poorly described species belonging to the order Lysobacterales to perform a phylogenetic analysis based on the 16 S rRNA sequence. Moreover, to obtain robust phylogeny, we have generated whole-genome sequencing data of six type species namely Metallibacterium scheffleri , Panacagrimonas perspica , Thermomonas haemolytica , Fulvimonas soli , Pseudofulvimonas gallinarii and Rhodanobacter lindaniclasticus of the families Lysobacteraceae and Rhodanobacteraceae . Interestingly, whole-genome-based phylogenetic analysis revealed unusual positioning of the type species Pseudofulvimonas , Panacagrimonas , Metallibacterium and Aquimonas at family level. Whole-genome-based phylogeny involving 92 type strains resolved the taxonomic positioning by reshuffling the genus across families Lysobacteraceae and Rhodanobacteraceae . The present study reveals the need and scope for genome-based phylogenetic and comparative studies in order to address relationships of genera and species of order Lysobacterales .
