Project description:A dielectric anomaly induced by doping has been observed at about 340 K in chlorine-doped diisopropylammonium bromide. The dielectric anomaly has a switchable behaviour, which indicates potential applications on switches and sensors. Temperature-dependent Raman spectrum, X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry do not show any anomaly around the dielectric anomaly temperature, which prove that the dielectric anomaly does not come from structure phase transition and has no specific heat variety. It is assumed that this dielectric anomaly can be attributed to the freezing of ferroelectric domain walls induced by the pinning of point defects.

Project description:A large perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and a high Curie temperature (TC) are crucial for the application of two-dimensional (2D) intrinsic ferromagnets to spintronic devices. Here, we investigated the electronic and magnetic properties of carrier-doped Van der Waals layered CrSX (X = Cl, Br, I) ferromagnets using first-principles calculations. It was found that hole doping can increase the magnitude of the magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE) and change the orientation of the easy magnetization axis at small doping amounts of 2.37 × 1013, 3.98 × 1012, and 3.33 × 1012/cm2 for CrSCl, CrSBr, and CrSI monolayers, respectively. The maximum values of the MAE reach 57, 133, and 1597 μeV/u.c. for the critical hole-doped CrSCl, CrSBr, and CrSI with spin orientation along the (001) direction, respectively. Furthermore, the Fermi energy level of lightly hole-doped CrSX (X = Cl, Br, I) moves into the spin-up valence band, leading to the CrSX (X = Cl, Br, I) magnetic semiconductor monolayer becoming first a half-metal and then a metal. In addition, the TC can also be increased up to 305, 317, and 345 K for CrSCl, CrSBr, and CrSI monolayers at doping amounts of 5.94 × 1014, 5.78 × 1014, and 5.55 × 1014/cm2, respectively. These properties suggest that the hole-doping process can render 2D CrSX (X = Cl, Br, I) monolayers remarkable materials for application to electrically controlled spintronic devices.

Project description:A series of Ba1-x-ySrxCayTiO3 compounds were prepared with varying average ionic radii and cation disorder on A-site. All samples showed typical ferroelectric behavior. A simple empirical equation correlated Curie temperature, TC, with the values of ionic radii of A-site cations. This correlation was related to the distortion of TiO6 octahedra observed during neutron diffraction studies. The equation was used for the selection of compounds with predetermined values of TC. The effects of A-site ionic radii on the temperatures of phase transitions in Ba1-x-ySrxCayTiO3 were discussed.

Project description:EuS nanocrystals (NCs) were doped with Gd resulting in an enhancement of their magnetic properties. New EuS and GdS single source precursors (SSPs) were synthesized, characterized, and employed to synthesize Eu(1-x)Gd(x)S NCs by decomposition in oleylamine and trioctylphosphine at 290 °C. The doped NCs were characterized using X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and scanning transmission electron microscopy, which support the uniform distribution of Gd dopants through electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) mapping. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) revealed the dopant ions in Eu(1-x)Gd(x)S NCs to be predominantly Gd(3+). NCs with a variety of doping ratios of Gd (0 ? x < 1) were systematically studied using vibrating sample magnetometry and the observed magnetic properties were correlated with the Gd doping levels (x) as quantified with ICP-AES. Enhancement of the Curie temperature (T(C)) was observed for samples with low Gd concentrations (x ? 10%) with a maximum T(C) of 29.4 K observed for NCs containing 5.3% Gd. Overall, the observed T(C), Weiss temperature (?), and hysteretic behavior correspond directly to the doping level in Eu(1-x)Gd(x)S NCs and the trends qualitatively follow those previously reported for bulk and thin film samples.

Project description:Doped magnetite (SnxFe3-2/3xO4) nanoparticles (NPs) (12-50?nm) with different amount of Sn2+ ions (x) were synthesized using co-precipitation method. Sn2+ doping reduces the anticipated oxidation of Fe3O4 NPs to maghemite (?-Fe2O3), making them attractive in several magnetic applications. Detailed characterizations during heating-cooling cycles revealed the possibility of tuning the unusual observed magnetization dipping temperature/amplitude, irreversibility, and Curie point of these NPs. We attribute this dip to the chemical reduction of ?-Fe2O3 at the NPs surfaces. Along with an increase in the dipping temperature, we found that doping with Sn2+ reduces the dipping amplitude, until it approximately disappears when x = 0.150. Based on the core-shell structure of these NPs, a phenomenological expression that combines both modified Bloch law (M = M0[1 - ?(T/TC)]?) and a modified Curie-Weiss law (M = -??[1/(T - TC)?]) is developed in order to explain the observed M-T behavior at different applied external magnetic fields and for different Sn2+ concentrations. By applying high enough magnetic field, the value of the parameters ? and ? ? 1 which are the same in modified Bloch and Curie-Weiss laws. They do not change with the magnetic field and depend only on the material structure and size. The power ? for high magnetic field was 2.6 which is as expected for this size of nanoparticles with the core dominated magnetization. However, the ? value fluctuates between 3 and 10 for small magnetic fields indicating an extra magnetic contribution from the shell structure presented by Curie-Weiss term. The parameter (?) has a very small value and it turns to negative values for high magnetic fields.

Project description:Achieving metrological precision of quantum anomalous Hall resistance quantization at zero magnetic field so far remains limited to temperatures of the order of 20 mK, while the Curie temperature in the involved material is as high as 20 K. The reason for this discrepancy remains one of the biggest open questions surrounding the effect, and is the focus of this article. Here we show, through a careful analysis of the non-local voltages on a multi-terminal Corbino geometry, that the chiral edge channels continue to exist without applied magnetic field up to the Curie temperature of bulk ferromagnetism of the magnetic topological insulator, and that thermally activated bulk conductance is responsible for this quantization breakdown. Our results offer important insights on the nature of the topological protection of these edge channels, provide an encouraging sign for potential applications, and establish the multi-terminal Corbino geometry as a powerful tool for the study of edge channel transport in topological materials.

Project description:Monte Carlo (MC) simulation of the classical Heisenberg model has become the de facto tool to estimate the Curie temperature (T C) of two-dimensional (2D) magnets. As an alternative, here we develop data-driven models for the five most common crystal types, considering the isotropic and anisotropic exchange of up to four nearest neighbors and the single-ion anisotropy. We sample the 20-dimensional Heisenberg spin Hamiltonian and conceive a bisection-based MC technique to simulate a quarter of a million materials for training deep neural networks, which yield testing R 2 scores of nearly 0.99. Since 2D magnetism has a natural tendency toward low T C, learning-from-data is combined with data-from-learning to ensure a nearly uniform final data distribution over a wide range of T C (10-1,000 K). Global and local analysis of the features confirms the models' interpretability. We also demonstrate that the T C can be accurately estimated by a purely first-principles-based approach, free from any empirical corrections.

Project description:We propose a new approach to obtain ultra-high piezoelectric coefficients that can be infinitely large theoretically, where ferroelectrics with strain-sensitive Curie temperature are necessary. We show the first-principles plus Monte Carlo simulation evidence that many hydrogen-bonded ferroelectrics (e.g. organic PhMDA) can be ideal candidates, which are also flexible and lead-free. Owing to the specific features of hydrogen bonding, their proton hopping barrier will drastically increase with prolonged proton transfer distance, while their hydrogen-bonded network can be easily compressed or stretched due to softness of hydrogen bonds. Their barriers as well as the Curie temperature can be approximately doubled upon a tensile strain as low as 2%. Their Curie temperature can be tuned exactly to room temperature by fixing a strain in one direction, and in another direction, an unprecedented ultra-high piezoelectric coefficient of 2058 pC/N can be obtained. This value is even underestimated and can be greatly enhanced when applying a smaller strain. Aside from sensors, they can also be utilized for converting either mechanical or thermal energies into electrical energies due to high pyroelectric coefficients.

Project description:N-doped graphene with Curie temperature higher than room temperature is a good candidate for nanomagnetic applications. Here we report a kind of N-doped graphene that exhibits ferromagnetic property with high Curie temperature (>600?K). Four graphene samples were prepared through self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS), and the doped nitrogen contents of in the samples were 0 at.%, 2.53 at.%, 9.21 at.% and 11.17 at.%. It has been found that the saturation magnetization and coercive field increase with the increasing of nitrogen contents in the samples. For the sample with the highest nitrogen content, the saturation magnetizations reach 0.282?emu/g at 10 K and 0.148?emu/g at 300?K; the coercive forces reach 544.2?Oe at 10?K and 168.8?Oe at 300?K. The drop of magnetic susceptibility at ~625?K for N-doped graphene is mainly caused by the decomposition of pyrrolic N and pydinic N. Our results suggest that SHS method is an effective and high-throughput method to produce N-doped graphene with high nitrogen concentration and that N-doped graphene produced by SHS method is promising to be a good candidate for nanomagnetic applications.

Project description:Changes in the Curie transition temperature of nanoconfined poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) P(VDF-TrFE) copolymers can have a severe impact on the electroactive behavior and the application range of these materials. Therefore, the origin of the change in the Curie transition temperature requires a profound understanding. In this work, block copolymer self-assembly into a spherical morphology proves to be a viable method to effectively confine P(VDF-TrFE) in three dimensions for studying the effect of nanoconfinement on the Curie transition. Using differential scanning calorimetry and wide-angle X-ray scattering, easily accessible experimental techniques, we follow the crystalline phase transitions, showing that confining P(VDF-TrFE) in a nonpolar polystyrene (PS) or poly(4-tert-butoxystyrene) (PtBOS) matrix results in an increase of the Curie transition upon cooling and heating. However, when a more polar matrix is used to nanoconfine P(VDF-TrFE), the Curie transition temperature is drastically reduced due to surface effects.
