A 60-year-old asymptomatic woman with pulmonary lesions and cervical lymphadenopathy.

ABSTRACT: A 60-year-old asymptomatic woman was referred to our hospital because of an abnormal chest roentgenogram during a routine medical checkup. The patient had no history of memorable infectious diseases, except a liver abscess caused by Serratia marcescens at age 46 years. Her son was diagnosed with chronic granulomatous disease at the age of 1 year. She had never smoked cigarettes and drank only occasionally.

An atypical presentation of a strangulated bochdalek hernia in a 60-year-old woman.

Project description:Bochdalek hernia (BH), resulting from the failure of posterolateral diaphragmatic foramina to fuse, is the most common congenital diaphragmatic hernia and usually manifests in pediatric age with life-threatening complications. Here, we report the case of a 60-year-old female with a left-sided Bochdalek diaphragmatic hernia, who presented with abdominal pain and dyspnea. The patient was successfully treated by open surgery approach but the patient died due to the lung doesnt expand after atelectasis in the third day after surgery. We know that a few cases of bochdalek hernia have been reported in the elderly by the medical literature, but what distinguishes our case is that the hernia was strangulated and the patient died as a result of non-expansion of the lung after its atelectasis following surgical repair.

Cor Triatriatum Sinistrum Combined with Changes in Atrial Septum and Right Atrium in a 60-Year-Old Woman.

Project description:Background and Objectives: A rare case of cor triatriatum sinistrum in combination with anomalies in the atrial septum and in the right atrium of a 60-year-old female body donor is described here. Materials and Methods: In addition to classical dissection, ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging, computer tomography and cinematic rendering were performed. In a reference series of 59 regularly formed hearts (33 men, 26 women), we looked for features in the left and right atrium or atrial septum. In addition, we measured the atrial and ventricular wall thickness in 15 regularly formed hearts (7 men, 8 women). Results: In the case described, the left atrium was partly divided into two chambers by an intra-atrial membrane penetrated by two small openings. The 2.5 cm-high membrane originated in the upper level of the oval fossa and left an opening of about 4 cm in diameter. Apparently, the membrane did not lead to a functionally significant flow obstruction due to the broad intra-atrial communication between the proximal and distal chamber of the left atrium. In concordance with this fact, left atrial wall thickness was not elevated in the cor triatriatum sinistrum when compared with 15 regularly formed hearts. In addition, two further anomalies were found: 1. the oval fossa was deepened and arched in the direction of the left atrium; 2. the right atrium showed a membrane-like structure at its posterior and lateral walls, which began at the lower edge of the oval fossa. It probably corresponds to a strongly developed eustachian valve (valve of the inferior vena cava). Conclusions: The case described suggests that malformations in the development of the atrial septum and in the regression of the valve of the right sinus vein are involved in the pathogenesis of cor triatriatum sinistrum.

Project description:An 82-year-old woman with a history of LD stage SCLC of her left upper lobe nine years earlier, had been treated with five cycles chemotherapy cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin and etoposide (CDE)) resulting in a complete response. She received prophylactic cranial irradiation. Now she presented with a palpable mass in the right supra-clavicular fossa. Her further medical history revealed coronary vascular disease, for which she underwent PTCA; mild aortic valve stenosis and a pacemaker to treat a third degree AV block. She has NYHA class II. Project description:Anomalous origin of the left coronary artery from the pulmonary artery is rare and typically results in mitral regurgitation, ventricular arrhythmias, heart failure, and sudden death. The condition most often manifests itself in early childhood, but some individuals are diagnosed much later. We describe the case of a 75-year-old woman with heart failure in whom stepwise multimodal imaging revealed anomalous origin of the left coronary artery from the pulmonary artery.

DNA methylation profiles of 30 tissues from a 112 year old woman

Project description:The main goal of the study was to measure the epigenetic age (also known as DNA methylation age) of these tissues. Toward this end, we used the epigenetic clock software described in Horvath S (n=2013) DNA methylation age of human tissues and cell types. Genome Biology.2013, 14:R115. Reviving a 60 million year old LINE-1 element.

Project description:Mobile elements have significantly impacted genome structure of most organisms. The continued activity of the mobile element, LINE-1 (L1), through time has contributed to the accumulation of over half a million L1 copies in the human genome. Most copies in the human genome belong to evolutionary older extinct L1s. Here we apply our previous published approach to "revive" the extinct L1 PA13A; an L1 family that was active about 60 million year ago (mya). The reconstructed L1PA13A is retrocompentent in culture, but shows a significantly lower level of activity in HeLa cells when compared to the modern L1 element (L1PA1) and a 40 million year old L1PA8. L1 elements code for two proteins (ORF1p and ORF2p) that are necessary for retrotransposition. Using PA13A-PA1 and PA13A-PA8 L1 chimeric elements, we determined that both the ORF1p and ORF2p contribute to the observed decrease in retrotransposition efficiency of L1PA13A. The lower retrotransposition rate of L1PA13A is consistent in both human and rodent cell lines. However, in rodent cells, the chimeric element L1PA:1-13 containing the modern L1PA1 ORF1p shows a recovery in the retrotransposition rate, suggestive that the L1PA13A ORF2p efficiently drives retrotransposition in these cells. The functionality of the L1PA13A ORF2p was further confirmed by demonstrating its ability to drive Alu retrotransposition in rodent cells. The variation in L1PA13A retrotransposition rates observed between rodent and human cells are suggestive that cellular environment significantly affects retrotransposition efficiency, which may be mediated through an interaction with ORF1p. Based on these observations, we speculate that the observed differences between cell lines may reflect an evolutionary adaptation of the L1 element to its host cell.
