On-Surface Observation of the Formation of Organometallic Complex in a Supramolecular Network.

ABSTRACT: The on-surface formation of organometallic monomers or oligomers, especially in supramolecular network, attracts an extensive interest for chemists and material scientist. In this work, we have investigated metal coordination between zinc (II) phthalocyanine (ZnPc) and 1, 3-di (4-pyridyl) propane (dipy-pra) in the 2, 6, 11-tricarboxydecyloxy-3, 7, 10-triundecyloxy triphenylene (asym-TTT) supramolecular template by means of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) substrate under ambient conditions. The experimental results demonstrate that every two ZnPc molecules in one nano-reactor connect with each other through one dipy-pra molecule by metal-coordination interaction. In this coordinating process, the template of asym-TTT supramolecular networks plays a significant role.

Stepwise on-surface dissymmetric reaction to construct binodal organometallic network.

Project description:Dissymmetric reactions, which enable differentiated functionalization of equivalent sites within one molecule, have many potential applications in synthetic chemistry and materials science, but they are very challenging to achieve. Here, the dissymmetric reaction of 1,4-dibromo-2,5-diethynylbenzene (2Br-DEB) on Ag(111) is realized by using a stepwise activation strategy, leading to an ordered two-dimensional organometallic network containing both alkynyl-silver-alkynyl and alkynyl-silver-phenyl nodes. Scanning tunneling microscopy and density functional theory calculations are employed to explore the stepwise conversion of 2Br-DEB, which starts from the H-passivation of one Br-substituted site at 300?K in accompaniment with an intermolecular reaction to form one-dimensional organometallic chains containing alkynyl-silver-alkynyl nodes. Afterwards, the other equivalent Br-substituted site undergoes metalation reaction at 320-450?K, resulting in transformation of the chains into the binodal networks. These findings exemplify the achievement of the dissymmetric reaction and its practical application for controlled fabrications of complicated yet ordered nanostructures on a surface.

Ion Mobility Mass Spectrometry Uncovers Guest-Induced Distortions in a Supramolecular Organometallic Metallosquare.

Project description:The encapsulation of the tetracationic palladium metallosquare with four pyrene-bis-imidazolylidene ligands [1]4+ with a series of organic molecules was studied by Electrospray ionization Travelling Wave Ion-Mobility Mass Spectrometry (ESI TWIM-MS). The method allowed to determine the Collision Cross Sections (CCSs), which were used to assess the size changes experienced by the host upon encapsulation of the guest molecules. When fullerenes were used as guests, the host is expanded ΔCCS 13 Å2 and 23 Å2 , for C60 or C70 , respectively. The metallorectangle [1]4+ was also used for the encapsulation of a series of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and naphthalenetetracarboxylic diimide (NTCDI), to form complexes of formula [(NTCDI)2 (PAH)@1]4+ . For these host:guest adducts, the ESI IM-MS studies revealed that [1]4+ is expanded by 47-49 Å2 .. The energy-minimized structures of [1]4+ , [C60 @1]4+ , [C70 @1]4+ , [(NTCDI)2 (corannulene)@1]4+ in the gas phase were obtained by DFT calculations.Introduction.

Real-time observation of multiple-protein complex formation with single-molecule FRET.

Project description:Current single-molecule techniques do not permit the real-time observation of multiple proteins interacting closely with each other. We here report an approach enabling us to determine the single-molecule fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) kinetics of multiple protein-protein interactions occurring far below the diffraction limit. We observe a strongly cooperative formation of multimeric soluble N-ethylmaleimide-sensitive factor attachment protein receptor (SNARE) complexes, which suggests that formation of the first SNARE complex triggers a cascade of SNARE complex formation.

A Structurally Characterized Organometallic Plutonium(IV) Complex.

Project description:The blood-red plutonocene complex Pu(1,3-COT'')(1,4-COT'') (4; COT''=η8 -bis(trimethylsilyl)cyclooctatetraenyl) has been synthesized by oxidation of the anionic sandwich complex Li[Pu(1,4-COT'')2 ] (3) with anhydrous cobalt(II) chloride. The first crystal structure determination of an organoplutonium(IV) complex revealed an asymmetric sandwich structure for 4 where one COT'' ring is 1,3-substituted while the other retains the original 1,4-substitution pattern. The electronic structure of 4 has been elucidated by a computational study, revealing a probable cause for the unexpected silyl group migration.

A Stable Homoleptic Organometallic Iron(IV) Complex.

Project description:A homoleptic organometallic FeIV complex that is stable in both solution and in the solid state at ambient conditions has been synthesized and isolated as [Fe(phtmeimb)2 ](PF6 )2 (phtmeimb=[phenyl(tris(3-methylimidazolin-2-ylidene))borate]- ). This FeIV N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) complex was characterized by 1 H NMR, HR-MS, elemental analysis, scXRD analysis, electrochemistry, Mößbauer spectroscopy, and magnetic susceptibility. The two latter techniques unequivocally demonstrate that [Fe(phtmeimb)2 ](PF6 )2 is a triplet FeIV low-spin S=1 complex in the ground state, in agreement with quantum chemical calculations. The electronic absorption spectrum of [Fe(phtmeimb)2 ](PF6 )2 in acetonitrile shows an intense absorption band in the red and near IR, due to LMCT (ligand-to-metal charge transfer) excitation. For the first time the excited state dynamics of a FeIV complex was studied and revealed a ≈0.8 ps lifetime of the 3 LMCT excited state of [Fe(phtmeimb)2 ](PF6 )2 in acetonitrile.

Lysophosphatidic acid 2 receptor-mediated supramolecular complex formation regulates its antiapoptotic effect.

Project description:The G protein-coupled lysophosphatidic acid 2 (LPA(2)) receptor elicits prosurvival responses to prevent and rescue cells from apoptosis. However, G protein-coupled signals are not sufficient for the full protective effect of LPA(2). LPA(2) differs from other LPA receptor subtypes in the C-terminal tail, where it contains a zinc finger-binding motif for the interactions with LIM domain-containing TRIP6 and proapoptotic Siva-1, and a PDZ-binding motif through which it complexes with the NHERF2 scaffold protein. In this report, we identify a unique CXXC motif of LPA(2) responsible for the binding to TRIP6 and Siva-1, and demonstrate that disruption of these macromolecular complexes or knockdown of TRIP6 or NHERF2 expression attenuates LPA(2)-mediated protection from chemotherapeutic agent-induced apoptosis. In contrast, knockdown of Siva-1 expression enhances this effect. Furthermore, a PDZ-mediated direct interaction between TRIP6 and NHERF2 facilitates their interaction with LPA(2). Together, these results suggest that in addition to G protein-activated signals, the cooperation embedded in the LPA(2)-TRIP6-NHERF2 ternary complex provides a novel ligand-dependent signal amplification mechanism that is required for LPA(2)-mediated full activation of antiapoptotic signaling.

Surface-Bound Ruthenium Diimine Organometallic Complexes: Excited-State Properties.

Project description:Ruthenium complexes of the general formula [Ru(CO)(H)(L2)(L'2)][PF6] (L2 = trans-2PPh3, L' = ?2-4,4'-dicarboxybipyridine (1); L2 =trans-2Ph2PCH2CH2COOH, L'2 = bipyridine (2); L2 = Ph2PCHCHPPh2, L' = ?2-5-amino-1,10-phenanthroline (3); L2 = trans-2PPh3, L'2 = ?2-4-carboxaldehyde-4'-methylbipyridine (4)) have been shown to have longer emission lifetimes and higher quantum yields in solution compared with more symmetrical molecules such as [Ru(bpy)3][Cl]2. Compound 4 is obtained as a mixture with the corresponding acetal, 4'. These less symmetrical complexes have been covalently immobilized on the surface of silica polyamine composites, and their photophysical properties have been studied. The surface-bound complexes have been characterized by solid-state CPMAS 13C, 31P, and 29Si NMR, UV-vis, and FT-IR spectroscopies. Excited-state lifetime studies revealed that, in general, the lifetimes of the immobilized complexes are 1.4 to 8 times longer than in solution and are dependent on particle size (300-500 ?m versus 10-20 nm average diameter silica gels), polymer structure (linear poly(allylamine) versus branched poly(ethylenimine)), and the type of surface tether. One exception to this trend is the previously reported complex [Ru(bpy)2(5-amino-1,10-phenanthroline)][PF6]2 (5), where only a slight increase in lifetime is observed. Only minor changes in emission wavelength are observed for all the complexes. This opens up the possibility for enhanced heterogeneous electron transfer in photocatalytic reactions.

Reactive surface organometallic complexes observed using dynamic nuclear polarization surface enhanced NMR spectroscopy.

Project description:Dynamic Nuclear Polarization Surface Enhanced NMR Spectroscopy (DNP SENS) is an emerging technique that allows access to high-sensitivity NMR spectra from surfaces. However, DNP SENS usually requires the use of radicals as an exogenous source of polarization, which has so far limited applications for organometallic surface species to those that do not react with the radicals. Here we show that reactive surface species can be studied if they are immobilized inside porous materials with suitably small windows, and if bulky nitroxide bi-radicals (here TEKPol) are used as the polarization source and which cannot enter the pores. The method is demonstrated by obtaining significant DNP enhancements from highly reactive complelxes [([triple bond, length as m-dash]Si-O-)W(Me)5] supported on MCM-41, and effects of pore size (6.0, 3.0 and 2.5 nm) on the performance are discussed.

AtVPS45 complex formation at the trans-Golgi network.

Project description:The Sec1p family of proteins are thought to be involved in the regulation of vesicle fusion reactions through interaction with t-SNAREs (target soluble N-ethylmaleimide-sensitive factor attachment protein receptors) at the target membrane. AtVPS45 is a member of this family from Arabidopsis thaliana that we now demonstrate to be present on the trans-Golgi network (TGN), where it colocalizes with the vacuolar cargo receptor AtELP. Unlike yeast Vps45p, AtVPS45 does not interact with, or colocalize with, the prevacuolar t-SNARE AtPEP12. Instead, AtVPS45 interacts with two t-SNAREs, AtTLG2a and AtTLG2b, that show similarity to the yeast t-SNARE Tlg2p. AtTLG2a and -b each colocalize with AtVPS45 at the TGN; however, AtTLG2a is in a different region of the TGN than AtTLG2b by immunogold electron microscopy. Therefore, we propose that complexes containing AtVPS45 and either AtTLG2a or -b define functional subdomains of the TGN and may be required for different trafficking events. Among other Arabidopsis SNAREs, AtVPS45 antibodies preferentially coprecipitate AtVTI1b over the closely related isoform AtVTI1a, implying that AtVTI1a and AtVTI1b also have distinct functions within the cell. These data point to a functional complexity within the plant secretory pathway, where proteins encoded by gene families have specialized functions, rather than functional redundancy.

On-Surface Synthesis of Chlorinated Narrow Graphene Nanoribbon Organometallic Hybrids.

Project description:Graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) and their derivatives attract growing attention due to their excellent electronic and magnetic properties as well as the fine-tuning of such properties that can be obtained by heteroatom substitution and/or edge morphology modification. Here, we introduce graphene nanoribbon derivatives-organometallic hybrids with gold atoms incorporated between the carbon skeleton and side Cl atoms. We show that narrow chlorinated 5-AGNROHs (armchair graphene nanoribbon organometallic hybrids) can be fabricated by on-surface polymerization with omission of the cyclodehydrogenation reaction by a proper choice of tailored molecular precursors. Finally, we describe a route to exchange chlorine atoms connected through gold atoms to the carbon skeleton by hydrogen atom treatment. This is achieved directly on the surface, resulting in perfect unsubstituted hydrogen-terminated GNRs. This will be beneficial in the molecule on-surface processing when the preparation of final unsubstituted hydrocarbon structure is desired.
