Project description:Many gravitational phenomena that lie at the core of our understanding of the Universe have not yet been directly observed. An example in this sense is the boson star that has been proposed as an alternative to some compact objects currently interpreted as being black holes. In the weak field limit, these stars are governed by the Newton-Schrodinger equation. Here we present an optical system that, under appropriate conditions, identically reproduces such equation in two dimensions. A rotating boson star is experimentally and numerically modelled by an optical beam propagating through a medium with a positive thermal nonlinearity and is shown to oscillate in time while also stable up to relatively high densities. For higher densities, instabilities lead to an apparent breakup of the star, yet coherence across the whole structure is maintained. These results show that optical analogues can be used to shed new light on inaccessible gravitational objects.

Project description:We investigate the propagation of one-dimensional and two-dimensional (1D, 2D) Gaussian beams in the fractional Schrödinger equation (FSE) without a potential, analytically and numerically. Without chirp, a 1D Gaussian beam splits into two nondiffracting Gaussian beams during propagation, while a 2D Gaussian beam undergoes conical diffraction. When a Gaussian beam carries linear chirp, the 1D beam deflects along the trajectories z = ±2(x - x0), which are independent of the chirp. In the case of 2D Gaussian beam, the propagation is also deflected, but the trajectories align along the diffraction cone z = 2√(x(2) + y(2)) and the direction is determined by the chirp. Both 1D and 2D Gaussian beams are diffractionless and display uniform propagation. The nondiffracting property discovered in this model applies to other beams as well. Based on the nondiffracting and splitting properties, we introduce the Talbot effect of diffractionless beams in FSE.

Project description:In this paper, we implement the Fokas method to study initial-boundary value problems of the mixed coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equation formulated on the half-line with Lax pairs involving 3×3 matrices. The solution can be written in terms of the solution to a 3×3 Riemann-Hilbert problem. The relevant jump matrices are explicitly expressed in terms of the matrix-value spectral functions s(k) and S(k), which are determined by the initial values and boundary values at x=0, respectively. Some of these boundary values are unknown; however, using the fact that these specific functions satisfy a certain global relation, the unknown boundary values can be expressed in terms of the given initial and boundary data.

Project description:The Ritz upper bound to eigenvalues of Hermitian operators is essential for many applications in science. It is a staple of quantum chemistry and physics computations. The lower bound devised by Temple in 1928 [G. Temple, Proc. R. Soc. A Math. Phys. Eng. Sci. 119, 276-293 (1928)] is not, since it converges too slowly. The need for a good lower-bound theorem and algorithm cannot be overstated, since an upper bound alone is not sufficient for determining differences between eigenvalues such as tunneling splittings and spectral features. In this paper, after 90 y, we derive a generalization and improvement of Temple's lower bound. Numerical examples based on implementation of the Lanczos tridiagonalization are provided for nontrivial lattice model Hamiltonians, exemplifying convergence over a range of 13 orders of magnitude. This lower bound is typically at least one order of magnitude better than Temple's result. Its rate of convergence is comparable to that of the Ritz upper bound. It is not limited to ground states. These results complement Ritz's upper bound and may turn the computation of lower bounds into a staple of eigenvalue and spectral problems in physics and chemistry.

Project description:In this paper, a non-autonomous (3+1) dimensional coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) with variable coefficients in optical fiber communication is analyzed. By means of bilinear technique and symbolic computations, new multi-soliton solutions of the coupled model in different trigonometric and lump functions are given. Then, in terms of perturbed waves, considering the steady state solution and the small perturbation on the three directions x, y, z and the time t, the soliton transmission are also considered. The behaviour of interaction among lump periodic soliton is studied and optical soliton solutions are reached. This study has certain significance for the analysis of other nonlinear dispersion systems and the application of optical physics. The results are presented through graphs generated by using Maple. The important feature of the proposed study is to show different behaviour of the soliton at each component. The behaviour of solitons, their interactions, and their transformations are all governed by the fundamental concept of energy conservation in all three examples. We demonstrate the efficiency of our suggested methodology for analyzing the NLSE equations using the numerical simulations and analytical tools, yielding fresh insights into their behaviour and solutions. Our findings help to develop mathematical tools for investigating nonlinear partial differential equation (NLPDEs) and provide new insights on the dynamics of NLSE equations, which have implications for many domains of physics and applied mathematics.

Project description:We present a simple, one-dimensional model of an atom exposed to a time-dependent intense, short-pulse EM field with the objective of teaching undergraduates how to apply various numerical methods to study the behavior of this system as it evolves in time using several time propagation schemes.In this model, the exact Coulomb potential is replaced by a soft-core interaction to avoid the singularity at the origin. Project description:The short-time integrator for propagating the time-dependent Schrödinger equation, which is exact to machine's round off accuracy when the Hamiltonian of the system is time-independent, was applied to solve dynamics processes. This integrator has the old Cayley's form [i.e., the Padé (1,1) approximation], but is implemented in a spectrally transformed Hamiltonian which was first introduced by Chen and Guo. Two examples are presented for illustration, including calculations of the collision energy-dependent probability passing over a barrier, and interaction process between pulse laser and the I(2) diatomic molecule.

Project description:Laser-driven ultrafast electron emission offers the possibility of manipulation and control of coherent electron motion in ultrashort spatiotemporal scales. Here, an analytical solution is constructed for the highly nonlinear electron emission from a dc biased metal surface illuminated by a single frequency laser, by solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation exactly. The solution is valid for arbitrary combinations of dc electric field, laser electric field, laser frequency, metal work function and Fermi level. Various emission mechanisms, such as multiphoton absorption or emission, optical or dc field emission, are all included in this single formulation. The transition between different emission processes is analyzed in detail. The time-dependent emission current reveals that intense current modulation may be possible even with a low intensity laser, by merely increasing the applied dc bias. The results provide insights into the electron pulse generation and manipulation for many novel applications based on ultrafast laser-induced electron emission.

Project description:Continuum solvent models have been widely used in biomolecular modeling applications. Recently much attention has been given to inclusion of implicit membranes into existing continuum Poisson-Boltzmann solvent models to extend their applications to membrane systems. Inclusion of an implicit membrane complicates numerical solutions of the underlining Poisson-Boltzmann equation due to the dielectric inhomogeneity on the boundary surfaces of a computation grid. This can be alleviated by the use of the periodic boundary condition, a common practice in electrostatic computations in particle simulations. The conjugate gradient and successive over-relaxation methods are relatively straightforward to be adapted to periodic calculations, but their convergence rates are quite low, limiting their applications to free energy simulations that require a large number of conformations to be processed. To accelerate convergence, the Incomplete Cholesky preconditioning and the geometric multigrid methods have been extended to incorporate periodicity for biomolecular applications. Impressive convergence behaviors were found as in the previous applications of these numerical methods to tested biomolecules and MMPBSA calculations.
