A new species of jumping spider Neonella Gertsch, with notes on the genus and male identification key (Araneae, Salticidae).

ABSTRACT: The American genus Neonella Gertsch, 1936 consists of very small jumping spiders whose biology is not well known. The genus currently includes eleven valid species, of which eight are known from both sexes and two are only known from one sex. This paper describes and illustrates a new species Neonella acostae sp. n., demonstrates male palpal variation in Neonella montana Galiano, 1988, and provides some information on the ecology of three sympatric species. New records of Neonella montana and Neonella minuta Galiano, 1965 are reported. Because the previously described species of Neonella were well illustrated and diagnosed, a dichotomous key to males is given along with genital illustrations of both sexes for all known species.

Project description:We diagnose and describe four new species of Portia Karsch, 1878 and describe for the first time the male of P.zhaoi Peng, Li & Chen, 2003 from China based on morphological characters. The females of Portiabawang sp. nov. have the narrowest epigyne orifice. The males of Portiaerlangping sp. nov. have the shortest embolus among all the species. The females of Portiafajing sp. nov. can be distinguished from other species by the anterior orifice margin, which is nearly parallel to the posterior orifice margin. The males of Portiaxishan sp. nov. can be identified by the tegular furrow which extends to form a membrane and by the tegular apophysis which is obscured; the females of Portiaxishan sp. nov. can be diagnosed by the slit-like epigynal orifice. The males of P.zhaoi have the longest embolus among all the species, and females can be diagnosed by the circular epigyne orifice and the longest copulatory ducts. To facilitate future identification, we also provide the GenBank accession codes of the DNA barcode gene, Cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI), for all the type specimens.

Two new jumping spider species of the Habronattus clypeatus group (Araneae, Salticidae, Harmochirina).

Project description:Two species of the Habronattus clypeatus species group are described, Habronattus arcalorussp. n. from Texas and Colorado, and Habronattus gilaensissp. n. from New Mexico. Habronattus arcalorus males have extravagant ornamentation: a green first leg with an unusually dense lateral fringe of orange and white hairs, and a large grey triangular patella on the third leg with blue-white scales nearby. Habronattus gilaensis males are considerably more muted, lacking ornamentation on the third leg's patella and tibia. Photographs of living specimens are given, as well as notes on habitat.

Revalidation of the jumping spider genus Cheliceroides Zabka, 1985 based on molecular and morphological data (Araneae, Salticidae).

Project description:The monotypic genus Cheliceroides Żabka, 1985 is revalidated based on both molecular sequence data (ultra-conserved elements and protein coding genes of mitochondrial genomes) and morphological evidence. Our molecular phylogenetic analyses show that Cheliceroides is not closely related to Colopsus Simon, 1902, not even in the same tribe, and a comparative morphological study also demonstrates significant differences in the genital structures (i.e. in the shape of embolus, and with or without pocket on epigynum) of the two genera. Therefore, we remove Cheliceroides from the synonymy of Colopsus, and its generic status is revalidated.

Thirteen species of jumping spiders from northern Vietnam (Araneae, Salticidae)

Project description:Abstract A new genus and thirteen species of jumping spiders from northern Vietnam are reported. Zabkagen. nov. is erected to accommodate two species transferred from Euophrys Blackwall,1841, including the generotype, Z.cooki (Żabka, 1985), comb. nov., and Z.xuyei (Lin & Li, 2020), comb. nov. Twelve new species are described: Chinattuscrewsaesp. nov. (♂♀), C.logunovisp. nov. (♂♀), Eupoamaidinhyenisp. nov. (♂♀), E.maddisonisp. nov. (♂♀), E.ninhbinhsp. nov. (♂), E.zabkaisp. nov. (♂♀), Indopadillacucsp. nov. (♂♀), Synagelidesanisp. nov. (♂♀), S.miisp. nov. (♂♀), S.pengisp. nov. (♀), S.sanchasp. nov. (♂♀), and Yaginumaellahagiangsp. nov. (♂). The unknown male of Zabkacooki is described for the first time. Diagnostic photos of the habitus and copulatory organs are provided.

Taxonomic notes on the genus Eupoa Zabka, 1985 (Arachnida, Araneae, Salticidae).

Project description:The south-east Asian genus Eupoa is redescribed and diagnosed. Seven new species are diagnosed, described and illustrated: E. daklak sp. n. (?) from Viet-Nam; E. lehtineni sp. n. (??) from India, Thailand and Viet-Nam; E. lobli sp. n. (?) from Malaysia; E. pappi sp. n. (?) from Thailand; E. pulchella sp. n.(?) from Thailand; E. schwendingeri sp. n. (??) from Thailand; and E. thailandica sp. n. (??) from Thailand. Eupoa prima ?abka, 1985 and E. yunnanensis Peng & Kim, 1997 are redescribed and illustrated on the basis of type and/or newly collected materials. The female of E. yunnanensis Peng & Kim, 1997 is found and described for the first time.

A new lapsiine jumping spider from North America, with a review of Simon's Lapsias species (Araneae, Salticidae, Spartaeinae).

Project description:A new spider genus and species from México and Guatemala, Amilaps mayana gen. et sp. nov., is described, distinct from other members of the jumping spider tribe Lapsiini (subfamily Spartaeinae) by its four retromarginal cheliceral teeth and the large sclerite cradling the embolus. It is the first living lapsiine known outside of South America. This tribe has received attention recently for new species and genera in Ecuador and Brazil, but Simon's original four species of Lapsias, described from Venezuela in 1900 and 1901, remain relatively poorly known. Accordingly, new illustrations of Simon's type material are given, and a lectotype is designated for L. cyrboides Simon, 1900. The three forms of females in Simon's material from Colonia Tovar, Aragua, are reviewed and illustrated, and they are a tentatively matched with the three male lectotypes of his species from the same location.
