A multi-zoned white organic light-emitting diode with high CRI and low color temperature.

ABSTRACT: White organic light emitting diodes (WOLEDs) is becoming a new platform technology for a range of applications such as flat-panel displays, solid-state lightings etc., and are under intensive research. For general solid-state illumination applications, a WOLED's color rendering index (CRI) and correlated color temperature (CCT) are two crucial parameters. This paper reports that WOLED device structures can be constructed using four stacked emission layers which independently emit lights at blue, green, yellow and red color respectively. The intensity of each emission layer is then engineered by funneling excitons to the targeted emission layer to achieve an ultrahigh 92 CRI at 5000?cd/m(2), and to reduce CCT to below 2500?K.

Highly Efficient Candlelight Organic Light-Emitting Diode with a Very Low Color Temperature.

Project description:Low color temperature candlelight organic light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are human and environmentally friendly because of the absence of blue emission that might suppress at night the secretion of melatonin and damage retina upon long exposure. Herein, we demonstrated a lighting device incorporating a phenoxazine-based host material, 3,3-bis(phenoxazin-10-ylmethyl)oxetane (BPMO), with the use of orange-red and yellow phosphorescent dyes to mimic candlelight. The resultant BPMO-based simple structured candlelight organic LED device permitted a maximum exposure limit of 57,700 s, much longer than did a candle (2750 s) or an incandescent bulb (1100 s) at 100 lx. The resulting device showed a color temperature of 1690 K, which is significantly much lower than that of oil lamps (1800 K), candles (1900 K), or incandescent bulbs (2500 K). The device showed a melatonin suppression sensitivity of 1.33%, upon exposure for 1.5 h at night, which is 66% and 88% less than the candle and incandescent bulb, respectively. Its maximum power efficacy is 23.1 lm/W, current efficacy 22.4 cd/A, and external quantum efficiency 10.2%, all much higher than the CBP-based devices. These results encourage a scalable synthesis of novel host materials to design and manufacture high-efficiency candlelight organic LEDs.

Multi-spectral imaging with infrared sensitive organic light emitting diode.

Project description:Commercially available near-infrared (IR) imagers are fabricated by integrating expensive epitaxial grown III-V compound semiconductor sensors with Si-based readout integrated circuits (ROIC) by indium bump bonding which significantly increases the fabrication costs of these image sensors. Furthermore, these typical III-V compound semiconductors are not sensitive to the visible region and thus cannot be used for multi-spectral (visible to near-IR) sensing. Here, a low cost infrared (IR) imaging camera is demonstrated with a commercially available digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) camera and an IR sensitive organic light emitting diode (IR-OLED). With an IR-OLED, IR images at a wavelength of 1.2 µm are directly converted to visible images which are then recorded in a Si-CMOS DSLR camera. This multi-spectral imaging system is capable of capturing images at wavelengths in the near-infrared as well as visible regions.

Multi-color carbon dots for white light-emitting diodes.

Project description:Heteroatom doped carbon dots (CDs) with color adjustable properties have attracted extensive attention. The doping of elements can effectively tune the surface chemical properties of CDs, thus resulting in its multi-functional applications such as in bio-imaging, photocatalysis, and photothermal conversion. The facile preparation of single metal-doped CDs with color-tunable properties has been rarely reported yet. Herein, we report a one-step solvothermal method to synthesize CDs with different fluorescent emission varying from red to purple to blue. The luminescence characteristic of CDs can be tuned by simply controlling the ratio of precursors, with the emission wavelength correspondingly adjusted from 610 nm to 390 nm. XPS investigation further demonstrated that the color variation is mainly due to the doping of zinc, which will increase the degree of surface oxidation in the as-prepared CDs. For blue emission CDs, the content of graphitic carbon gradually decreases with the rising of zinc chloride addition, while oxygen content remains around 20%, compared with red emission CDs of which the oxygen content is only 4.42%. We also demonstrated with theoretical simulations that the Zn dopant and the functional groups including -C[double bond, length as m-dash]O, -C-OH, -NH2, and pyrrolic N, play an important role in color change. Furthermore, the synthesized CDs have been successfully used into the fabrication of white LEDs. More than that, we produced a sensitive sensor from the prepared CDs for the effective detection of a variety of colorless transparent organic solvents utilizing the robust fluorescence properties of CDs, showing their great potential as fluorescent probes for chemical sensing.

The fabrication of color-tunable organic light-emitting diode displays via solution processing.

Project description:Electroluminescent devices based on organic semiconductors have attracted significant attention owing to their promising applications in flat-panel displays. The conventional display pixel consisting of side-by-side arrayed red, green and blue subpixels represents the mature technology but bears an intrinsic deficiency of a low pixel density. Constructing an individual color-tunable pixel that comprises vertically stacked subpixels is considered an advanced technology. Although color-tunable organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) have been fabricated using the vacuum deposition of small molecules, the solution processing of conjugated polymers would enable a much simpler and inexpensive manufacturing process. Here we present the all-solution processing of color-tunable OLEDs comprising two vertically stacked polymer emitters. A thin layer of highly conducting and transparent silver nanowires is introduced as the intermediate charge injection contact, which allows the emission spectrum and intensity of the tandem devices to be seamlessly manipulated. To demonstrate a viable application of this technology, a 4-by-4 pixelated matrix color-tunable display was fabricated.

Converting an Organic Light-Emitting Diode from Blue to White with Bragg Modes.

Project description:Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) have been established as versatile light sources that allow for easy integration in large-area surfaces and flexible substrates. In addition, the low fabrication cost of OLEDs renders them particularly attractive as general lighting sources. Current methods for the fabrication of white-light OLEDs rely on the combination of multiple organic emitters and/or the incorporation of multiple cavity modes in a thick active medium. These architectures introduce formidable challenges in both device design and performance improvements, namely, the decrease of efficiency with increasing brightness (efficiency roll-off) and short operational lifetime. Here we demonstrate, for the first time, white-light generation in an OLED consisting of a sub-100 nm thick blue single-emissive layer coupled to the photonic Bragg modes of a dielectric distributed Bragg reflector (DBR). We show that the Bragg modes, although primarily located inside the DBR stack, can significantly overlap with the emissive layer, thus efficiently enhancing emission and outcoupling of photons at selected wavelengths across the entire visible light spectrum. Moreover, we show that color temperature can be tuned by the DBR parameters, offering great versatility in the optimization of white-light emission spectra.

Room-Temperature Multiple Phosphorescence from Functionalized Corannulenes: Temperature Sensing and Afterglow Organic Light-Emitting Diode.

Project description:Corannulene-derived materials have been extensively explored in energy storage and solar cells, however, are rarely documented as emitters in light-emitting sensors and organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), due to low exciton utilization. Here, we report a family of multi-donor and acceptor (multi-D-A) motifs, TCzPhCor, TDMACPhCor, and TPXZPhCor, using corannulene as the acceptor and carbazole (Cz), 9,10-dihydro-9,10-dimethylacridine (DMAC), and phenoxazine (PXZ) as the donor, respectively. By decorating corannulene with different donors, multiple phosphorescence is realized. Theoretical and photophysical investigations reveal that TCzPhCor shows room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) from the lowest-lying T1 ; however, for TDMACPhCor, dual RTP originating from a higher-lying T1 (T1 H ) and a lower-lying T1 (T1 L ) can be observed, while for TPXZPhCor, T1 H -dominated RTP occurs resulting from a stabilized high-energy T1 geometry. Benefiting from the high-temperature sensitivity of TPXZPhCor, high color-resolution temperature sensing is achieved. Besides, due to degenerate S1 and T1 H states of TPXZPhCor, the first corannulene-based solution-processed afterglow OLEDs is investigated. The afterglow OLED with TPXZPhCor shows a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQEmax ) and a luminance (Lmax ) of 3.3 % and 5167 cd m-2 , respectively, which is one of the most efficient afterglow RTP OLEDs reported to date.

Color-Stable White Organic Light-Emitting Diodes Utilizing a Blue-Emitting Electron-Transport Layer.

Project description:We have fabricated efficient and color-stable white organic light-emitting diodes (WOLEDs) based on a simple double-layer device structure consisting of a blue-emitting oligoquinoline electron-transport layer and a poly(N-vinyl carbazole) layer doped with phosphorescent green and red iridium emitters. Pure white color with the CIE coordinates from (0.30, 0.31) to (0.34, 0.37) in the whole operating bias voltage range and luminous efficiency higher than 7 cd/A at a brightness up to 12?000 cd/m2 was achieved. These results demonstrate a new strategy to realizing easily processable, highly efficient, and color-stable WOLEDs with a simple structure.

Low temperature solution process-based defect-induced orange-red light emitting diode.

Project description:We report low-temperature solution-processed p-CuO nanorods (NRs)/n-ZnO NRs heterojunction light emitting diode (LED), exploiting the native point defects of ZnO NRs. ZnO NRs were synthesized at 90 °C by using hydrothermal method while CuO NRs were synthesized at 100 °C by using microwave reaction system. The electrical properties of newly synthesized CuO NRs revealed a promising p-type nature with a hole concentration of 9.64 × 10(18) cm(-3). The current-voltage characteristic of the heterojunction showed a significantly high rectification ratio of 10(5) at 4 V with a stable current flow. A broad orange-red emission was obtained from the forward biased LED with a major peak at 610 nm which was attributed to the electron transition from interstitial zinc to interstitial oxygen point defects in ZnO. A minor shoulder peak was also observed at 710 nm, corresponding to red emission which was ascribed to the transition from conduction band of ZnO to oxygen vacancies in ZnO lattice. This study demonstrates a significant progress toward oxide materials based, defect-induced light emitting device with low-cost, low-temperature methods.

Quantum-dot and organic hybrid tandem light-emitting diodes with multi-functionality of full-color-tunability and white-light-emission.

Project description:Realizing of full-color quantum-dot LED display remains a challenge because of the poor stability of the blue quantum-dot and the immature inkjet-printing color patterning technology. Here, we develop a multifunctional tandem LED by stacking a yellow quantum-dot LED with a blue organic LED using an indium-zinc oxide intermediate connecting electrode. Under parallel connection and alternate-current driving, the tandem LED is full-color-tunable, which can emit red, green and blue primary colors as well as arbitrary colors that cover a 63% National Television System Committee color triangle. Under series connection and direct current driving, the tandem LED can emit efficient white light with a high brightness of 107000?cd?m-2 and a maximum external quantum efficiency up to 26.02%. The demonstrated hybrid tandem LED, with multi-functionality of full-color-tunability and white light-emission, could find potential applications in both full-color-display and solid-state-lighting.
