The genus Bebryce (Cnidaria, Octocorallia, Plexauridae) at Japan, with descriptions of three new species.

ABSTRACT: Three new deep-water species of Bebryce from Japan are described and depicted using Scanning Electron Microscopy: Bebryce otsuchiensis sp. n., Bebryce rotunda sp. n., and Bebryce satsumaensis sp. n. Bebryce studeri Whitelegge, 1897, was reported from Japanese waters for the first time, bringing the total of Japanese Bebryce species to six. Five of these six species seem to be endemic to Japanese waters and all occur in deep water up to 213 m. A key to the Bebryce species is presented.

Melithaeidae of Japan (Octocorallia, Alcyonacea) re-examined with descriptions of 11 new species.

Project description:Japanese melithaeid type material is re-examined and re-described. The sclerites of the different species are depicted using Scanning Electron Microscopy. All Japanese species of the family Melithaeidae treated here belong to the genus Melithaea and are endemic to Japanese waters. Old museum material and newly collected specimens from Japanese waters are identified after comparison with this type material. Acabaria modesta var. abyssicola is regarded a separate species, here named Melithaea abyssicola (Kükenthal, 1909). In addition, 11 new species are described: Melithaea boninensis sp. n., Melithaea doederleini sp. n., Melithaea isonoi sp. n., Melithaea keramaensis sp. n., Melithaea oyeni sp. n., Melithaea ryukyukensis sp. n., Melithaea sagamiensis sp. n., Melithaea satsumaensis sp. n., Melithaea suensoni sp. n., Melithaea tanseii sp. n., and Melithaea tokaraensis sp. n.. Pleurocorallium confusum Moroff, 1902, Pleurocoralloides formosum Moroff, 1902, Melitodes flabellifera Kükenthal, 1908, and Melitodes densa Kükenthal, 1908 are synonymized with Melithaea japonica (Verrill, 1865). We have designated a neotype for Melithaea mutsu Minobe, 1929. A key to the Japanese melithaeids is presented.

Description of three new species of <i>Scolanthus</i> (Cnidaria, Anthozoa, Actiniaria, Edwardsiidae): first records of the genus from Japan.

Project description:Scolanthus is one genus of Edwardsiidae, a speciose family of burrowing worm-like sea anemones characterized by lacking a physa-like aboral end and by possessing nemathybomes on the whole body except at the distal end. This genus has been recorded worldwide, but there have been no specimens collected from Japan. In this study, we discovered four Scolanthus species in Japan for the first time: Scolanthusarmatus (Carlgren, 1931) and Scolanthuskopepe sp. n. from the Ogasawara Islands, Scolanthusena sp. n. from Ena Bay, Kanagawa, and Scolanthusisei sp. n. from Sugashima Island, Mie.

Overview of the genus Briareum (Cnidaria, Octocorallia, Briareidae) in the Indo-Pacific, with the description of a new species.

Project description:The status of Indo-Pacific Briareum species (Cnidaria, Octocorallia, Briareidae) is reviewed by presenting their sclerite features and habitus descriptions. Following the re-examination of type material, museum specimens and newly collected specimens, a species identification key is provided. The species distributions are discussed and updated distribution ranges are depicted. Moreover, a new taxon, Briareum cylindrum sp. n. is described and depicted, whereas Briareum excavatum (Nutting, 1911) is synonymised with Briareum stechei (Kükenthal, 1908). Briareum hamrum (Gohar, 1948) is recorded from the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea for the first time. Consequently, in total four Briareum species are recognized in the Indo-Pacific; Briareum hamrum from the western Indian Ocean, and Briareum cylindrum sp. n., Briareum stechei, and Briareum violaceum from the central and eastern Indo-Pacific region.

An illustrated key to the species of the genus <i>Narella</i> (Cnidaria, Octocorallia, Primnoidae).

Project description:A history of the description of the 50 valid species of Narella is given, beginning with the first species described in 1860. To help differentiate the various species, a tabular and a polychotomous key are provided. The species in the keys are arranged using nine characters or character sets that are believed to be of value at the species level. New characters or new significance given to previously described characters used in our keys include: 1) the nature of the dorsolateral edge of the basal scale, being ridged or not, 2) the thickness of the body wall scales, and 3) the arrangement of the coenenchymal scales (imbricate or mosaic), their thickness (thin or massive), and their outer surface ornamentation (ridged or not). All characters used in the keys are illustrated.

A new genus and species of octocoral with aragonite calcium-carbonate skeleton (Octocorallia, Helioporacea) from Okinawa, Japan.

Project description:A new genus and species of octocoral with a calcium-carbonate skeleton, Naniporakamurai sp. n., is described from a shallow coral reef in Okinawa, Japan. Contrary to most octocorals, the skeleton is composed of crystalline aragonite as in blue coral Heliopora. The results of molecular phylogenetic analyses of sequences of mtMutS, COI, and ITS1-5.8s-ITS2-28S region suggest Nanipora gen. n. specimens should be included in order Helioporacea. Based on morphological results compared with other Helioporacea including the genus Epiphaxum (family Lithotelestidae), we establish the new genus Nanipora within Lithotelestidae. This is the first time that a close molecular phylogenetic relationship between Heliopora and a related genus within Helioporacea has been revealed.

Morphological and Molecular Characterization of Five Species Including Three New Species of Golden Gorgonians (Cnidaria: Octocorallia) from Seamounts in the Western Pacific.

Project description:Members of genus Iridogorgia Verrill, 1883 are the typical deep-sea megabenthos with only seven species reported. Based on an integrated morphological-molecular approach, eight sampled specimens of Iridogorgia from seamounts in the tropical Western Pacific are identified as three new species, and two known species I. magnispiralis Watling, 2007 and I. densispicula Xu, Zhan, Li and Xu, 2020. Iridogorgia flexilis sp. nov. is unique in having a very broad polyp body base with stout and thick scales. Iridogorgia densispiralis sp. nov. can be distinguished by rods present in both polyps and coenenchyme, and I. verrucosa sp. nov. is characterized by having numerous verrucae in coenenchyme and irregular spindles and scales in the polyp body wall. Phylogenetic analysis based on the nuclear 28S rDNA indicated that I. densispiralis sp. nov. showed close relationships with I. splendens Watling, 2007 and I. verrucosa sp. nov., and I. flexilis sp. nov. formed a sister clade with I. magnispiralis. In addition, due to Rhodaniridogorgia fragilis Watling, 2007 nested into the Iridogorgia clade in mtMutS-COI trees and shared highly similar morphology to the latter, we propose to eliminate the genus Rhodaniridogorgia by establishing a new combination Iridogorgia fragilis (Watling, 2007) comb. nov. and resurrecting I. superba Nutting, 1908.

Three species of Amphicorina (Annelida, Sabellida, Sabellidae) from Japan, with descriptions of two new species.

Project description:We describe two new species and redescribe one in the polychaete genus Amphicorina Claparède, 1864 (Sabellidae) from Hokkaido, Japan. Amphicorina ascidicolasp. n. differs from its 38 congeners chiefly in the reduction of the collar, but also in having three pairs of radioles, one pair of ventral radiolar appendages, a bifurcate ventral lobe on the anterior peristomial ring, six abdominal chaetigers, and a large anterior tooth on the abdominal uncini. Amphicorina ezoensissp. n. has a crenulated collar, three pairs of radioles, and more than eight (12) abdominal chaetigers; Amphicorina ezoensis shares these character states with Amphicorina anneae (Rouse, 1994), Amphicorina eimeri (Langerhans, 1880), and Amphicorina persinosa (Ben-Eliahu, 1975), but differs from them in having two pairs of ventral radiolar appendages and a non-oblique collar. Amphicorina mobilis (Rouse, 1990) was previously known only from the type locality (New South Wales, Australia), but we identify our Japanese material as conspecific on the basis of morphological and molecular similarity.

A new genus of soft coral of the family Alcyoniidae (Cnidaria, Octocorallia) with re-description of a new combination and description of a new species.

Project description:A new genus, Aldersladum (family Alcyoniidae), is established to accommodate a previously described species, Efflatounaria sodwanae Benayahu, 1993 (family Xeniidae) from Sodwana Bay, South Africa that was wrongly assigned to the latter genus. This species is redescribed and a second new species, Aldersladum jengi from Penghu Is., Taiwan, is described. The diagnostic features of the new genus include the presence of only figure-eight shaped platelets in all parts of the colony, thus differentiating it from all known genera of the Alcyoniidae. Based on examination of additional material from other localities, the zoogeographical distribution of the genus is confirmed to include the coral reefs of South Africa, Kenya, Gulf of Oman, Taiwan and Japan. Phylogenetic analyses of two mitochondrial genes strongly support its placement in the family Alcyoniidae.

A new genus of soft coral (Cnidaria, Octocorallia) from the Republic of Congo (Pointe-Noire Region).

Project description:A new genus of soft coral from the Republic of Congo is described, Complexum gen. n. Nine West African octocoral species previously described in the genus Alcyonium by Tixier-Durivault (1955) are referred to this new genus, and a new species is described and figured, Complexumpusillum sp. n. The new species is characterized by having encrusting growth form and abundant spiny clubs in the surface of the polyparium. It colonizes shallow calcareous rocky banks (5 to 20 m depth) existing in coastal water of the region of Pointe-Noire. Based on molecular phylogeny this new genus is well separated from Alcyonium species.
