Single crystal growth from separated educts and its application to lithium transition-metal oxides.

ABSTRACT: Thorough mixing of the starting materials is the first step of a crystal growth procedure. This holds true for almost any standard technique, whereas the intentional separation of educts is considered to be restricted to a very limited number of cases. Here we show that single crystals of ?-Li2IrO3 can be grown from separated educts in an open crucible in air. Elemental lithium and iridium are oxidized and transported over a distance of typically one centimeter. In contrast to classical vapor transport, the process is essentially isothermal and a temperature gradient of minor importance. Single crystals grow from an exposed condensation point placed in between the educts. The method has also been applied to the growth of Li2RuO3, Li2PtO3 and ?-Li2IrO3. A successful use of this simple and low cost technique for various other materials is anticipated.

Electroplating lithium transition metal oxides.

Project description:Materials synthesis often provides opportunities for innovation. We demonstrate a general low-temperature (260°C) molten salt electrodeposition approach to directly electroplate the important lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery cathode materials LiCoO2, LiMn2O4, and Al-doped LiCoO2. The crystallinities and electrochemical capacities of the electroplated oxides are comparable to those of the powders synthesized at much higher temperatures (700° to 1000°C). This new growth method significantly broadens the scope of battery form factors and functionalities, enabling a variety of highly desirable battery properties, including high energy, high power, and unprecedented electrode flexibility.

Unravelling structural ambiguities in lithium- and manganese-rich transition metal oxides.

Project description:Although Li- and Mn-rich transition metal oxides have been extensively studied as high-capacity cathode materials for Li-ion batteries, the crystal structure of these materials in their pristine state is not yet fully understood. Here we apply complementary electron microscopy and spectroscopy techniques at multi-length scale on well-formed Li1.2(Ni0.13Mn0.54Co0.13)O2 crystals with two different morphologies as well as two commercially available materials with similar compositions, and unambiguously describe the structural make-up of these samples. Systematically observing the entire primary particles along multiple zone axes reveals that they are consistently made up of a single phase, save for rare localized defects and a thin surface layer on certain crystallographic facets. More specifically, we show the bulk of the oxides can be described as an aperiodic crystal consisting of randomly stacked domains that correspond to three variants of monoclinic structure, while the surface is composed of a Co- and/or Ni-rich spinel with antisite defects.

Revisiting Primary Particles in Layered Lithium Transition-Metal Oxides and Their Impact on Structural Degradation.

Project description:Layered lithium transition-metal oxide materials, e.g., Li(Ni1- x - y Co x Mn y )O2 (NCM) and Li(Ni1- x - y Co x Al y )O2, are the most promising candidates for lithium-ion battery cathodes. They generally consist of ?10 µm spherical particles densely packed with smaller particles (0.1-1 µm), called secondary and primary particles, respectively. The micrometer- to nanometer-sized particles are critical to the battery performance because they affect the reaction capability of the cathode. Herein, the crystal structure of the primary particles of NCM materials is revisited. Elaborate transmission electron microscopy investigations reveal that the so-called primary particles, often considered as single crystals, are in fact polycrystalline secondary particles. They contain low-angle and exceptionally stable special grain boundaries (GBs) presumably created during aggregation via an oriented attachment mechanism. Therefore, this so-called primary particle is renamed as primary-like particle. More importantly, the low-angle GBs between the smaller true primary particles cause the development of nanocracks within the primary-like particles of Ni-rich NCM cathodes after repetitive electrochemical cycles. In addition to rectifying a prevalent misconception about primary particles, this study provides a previously unknown but important origin of structural degradation in Ni-rich layered cathodes.

Lithium-ion conducting oxide single crystal as solid electrolyte for advanced lithium battery application.

Project description:Today, all-solid-state secondary lithium-ion batteries have attracted attention in research and development all over the world as a next-generation energy storage device. A key material for the all-solid-state lithium batteries is inorganic solid electrolyte, including oxide and sulfide materials. Among the oxide electrolytes, garnet-type oxide exhibits the highest lithium-ion conductivity and a wide electrochemical potential window. However, they have major problems for practical realization. One of the major problems is an internal short-circuit in charging and discharging. In the polycrystalline garnet-type oxide electrolyte, dendrites of lithium metal easily grow through the void or impurity in grain boundaries of the sintered body, which causes serious internal short-circuits in the battery system. To solve these problems, we present an all-solid-state battery system using a single-crystal oxide electrolyte. We are the first to successfully grow centimeter-sized single crystals of garnet-type by the floating zone method. The single-crystal solid electrolyte exhibits an extremely high lithium-ion conductivity of 10-3 S cm-1 at 298 K. The garnet-type single-crystal electrolyte has an advantageous bulk nature to realize the bulk conductivity without grain boundaries such as in a sintered polycrystalline body, and will be a game-changing technology for achieving highly safe advanced battery systems.

Micelle-directed self-assembly of single-crystal-like mesoporous stoichiometric oxides for high-performance lithium storage.

Project description:Due to their uncontrollable assembly and crystallization process, the synthesis of mesoporous metal oxide single crystals remains a formidable challenge. Herein, we report the synthesis of single-crystal-like mesoporous Li2TiSiO5 by using soft micelles as templates. The key lies in the atomic-scale self-assembly and step-crystallization processes, which ensure the formation of single-crystal-like mesoporous Li2TiSiO5 microparticles via an oriented attachment growth mechanism under the confinement of an in-situ formed carbon matrix. The mesoporous Li2TiSiO5 anode achieves a superior rate capability (148 mAh g-1 at 5.0 A g-1) and outstanding long-term cycling stability (138 mAh g-1 after 3000 cycles at 2.0 A g-1) for lithium storage as a result of the ultrafast Li+ diffusion caused by penetrating mesochannels and nanosized crystal frameworks (5-10 nm). In comparison, bulk Li2TiSiO5 exhibits poor rate capability and cycle performance due to micron-scale diffusion lengths. This method is very simple and reproducible, heralding a new way of designing and synthesizing mesoporous single crystals with controllable frameworks and chemical functionalities.

Crystal Structure Prediction of Magnetic Transition-Metal Oxides by Using Evolutionary Algorithm and Hybrid DFT Methods.

Project description:Although numerous crystal structures have been successfully predicted by using currently available computational techniques, prediction of strongly correlated systems such as transition-metal oxides remains a challenge. To overcome this problem, we have interfaced evolutionary algorithm-based USPEX method with the CRYSTAL code, enabling the use of Gaussian-type localized atomic basis sets and hybrid density functional (DFT) methods for the prediction of crystal structures. We report successful crystal structure predictions of several transition-metal oxides (NiO, CoO, α-Fe2O3, V2O3, and CuO) with correct atomic magnetic moments, spin configurations, and structures by using the USPEX method in combination with the CRYSTAL code and Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE0) hybrid functional. Our benchmarking results demonstrate that USPEX + hybrid DFT is a suitable combination to reliably predict the magnetic structures of strongly correlated materials.

Single-crystal metal growth on amorphous insulating substrates.

Project description:Metal structures on insulators are essential components in advanced electronic and nanooptical systems. Their electronic and optical properties are closely tied to their crystal quality, due to the strong dependence of carrier transport and band structure on defects and grain boundaries. Here we report a method for creating patterned single-crystal metal microstructures on amorphous insulating substrates, using liquid phase epitaxy. In this process, the patterned metal microstructures are encapsulated in an insulating crucible, together with a small seed of a differing material. The system is heated to temperatures above the metal melting point, followed by cooling and metal crystallization. During the heating process, the metal and seed form a high-melting-point solid solution, which directs liquid epitaxial metal growth. High yield of single-crystal metal with different sizes is confirmed with electron backscatter diffraction images, after removing the insulating crucible. Unexpectedly, the metal microstructures crystallize with the [Formula: see text] direction normal to the plane of the film. This platform technology will enable the large-scale integration of high-performance plasmonic and electronic nanosystems.

Epitaxial growth of inch-scale single-crystal transition metal dichalcogenides through the patching of unidirectionally orientated ribbons.

Project description:Two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors, especially transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), have been envisioned as promising candidates in extending Moore's law. To achieve this, the controllable growth of wafer-scale TMDs single crystals or periodic single-crystal patterns are fundamental issues. Herein, we present a universal route for synthesizing arrays of unidirectionally orientated monolayer TMDs ribbons (e.g., MoS2, WS2, MoSe2, WSe2, MoSxSe2-x), by using the step edges of high-miller-index Au facets as templates. Density functional theory calculations regarding the growth kinetics of specific edges have been performed to reveal the morphological transition from triangular domains to patterned ribbons. More intriguingly, we find that, the uniformly aligned TMDs ribbons can merge into single-crystal films through a one-dimensional edge epitaxial growth mode. This work hereby puts forward an alternative pathway for the direct synthesis of inch-scale uniform monolayer TMDs single-crystals or patterned ribbons, which should promote their applications as channel materials in high-performance electronics or other fields.

Single crystal functional oxides on silicon.

Project description:Single-crystalline thin films of complex oxides show a rich variety of functional properties such as ferroelectricity, piezoelectricity, ferro and antiferromagnetism and so on that have the potential for completely new electronic applications. Direct synthesis of such oxides on silicon remains challenging because of the fundamental crystal chemistry and mechanical incompatibility of dissimilar interfaces. Here we report integration of thin (down to one unit cell) single crystalline, complex oxide films onto silicon substrates, by epitaxial transfer at room temperature. In a field-effect transistor using a transferred lead zirconate titanate layer as the gate insulator, we demonstrate direct reversible control of the semiconductor channel charge with polarization state. These results represent the realization of long pursued but yet to be demonstrated single-crystal functional oxides on-demand on silicon.

Non-equilibrium metal oxides via reconversion chemistry in lithium-ion batteries.

Project description:Binary metal oxides are attractive anode materials for lithium-ion batteries. Despite sustained effort into nanomaterials synthesis and understanding the initial discharge mechanism, the fundamental chemistry underpinning the charge and subsequent cycles-thus the reversible capacity-remains poorly understood. Here, we use in operando X-ray pair distribution function analysis combining with our recently developed analytical approach employing Metropolis Monte Carlo simulations and non-negative matrix factorisation to study the charge reaction thermodynamics of a series of Fe- and Mn-oxides. As opposed to the commonly believed conversion chemistry forming rocksalt FeO and MnO, we reveal the two oxide series topotactically transform into non-native body-centred cubic FeO and zincblende MnO via displacement-like reactions whose kinetics are governed by the mobility differences between displaced species. These renewed mechanistic insights suggest avenues for the future design of metal oxide materials as well as new material synthesis routes using electrochemically-assisted methods.
