Project description:Eosinophilic gastroenteritis is a rare disease of unknown aetiology, characterised by eosinophilic infiltration of the gastrointestinal wall with various gastrointestinal manifestations. Clinical presentation and radiological findings are non-specific and there is an overlap with more frequent childhood diseases requiring a high degree of clinical suspicion for accurate diagnosis. We describe a 2-month-old boy with prolonged diarrhoea, vomiting and food refusal. Diagnosis was settled by histology. The treatment with elemental diet was successful, with clinical resolution and catch-up growth.

Project description:The complete genome sequence of the type strain Corynebacterium imitans DSM 44264 comprises 2,565,321 bp with a mean G+C content of 64.26%. The detection of the antibiotic resistance genes erm(X), aphA1-IAB, strA-strB, and cmx is fully consistent with the previously observed multidrug-resistant pattern of C. imitans isolates.

Wilson disease with hepatic presentation in an eight-month-old boy.

Project description:Wilson disease is an autosomal recessive disorder of copper metabolism that can cause fatal neurological and hepatic disease if not diagnosed and treated. The youngest child with normal liver function reported so far is an 8-mo-old Japanese boy with low ceruloplasmin levels, and the youngest child with elevated aminotransferase ever reported so far is a 9-mo-old Korean boy with confirmed by genetic testing. Here we report an 8-mo-old Chinese boy presented with elevated liver enzymes, and low serum ceruloplasmin level. Genetic analysis of ATP7B gene detected two heterozygous disease causing mutations (c.2621C>T/p.A874V and c.3809A>G/p.N1270S), and parental origins were determined. Persistent elevation of serum aminotransferase in this infant was normalized after zinc therapy. To our best knowledge, this is the youngest patient with elevated liver enzymes ever reported worldwide. We hope that this will raise awareness among pediatricians, leading to earlier diagnosis, timely treatment, and better clinical outcome.

Ophthalmologic findings in an 18-month-old boy with focal dermal hypoplasia.

Project description:Focal dermal hypoplasia is a rare X-linked dominant disorder with in utero lethality in males. Affected patients have been reported to have several different mutations in the PORCN gene on chromosome Xp11.23. Dysplastic mesodermal and ectodermal tissue causes clinical findings in the skin, skeleton, teeth, central nervous system, and eyes of affected patients. We describe the ophthalmologic findings in an 18-month-old boy with mosaicism of a novel mutation in PORCN.

Corynebacterium phoceense - a rare Corynebacterium species isolated from a urine sample.

Project description:Corynebacterium spp. are Gram-positive rods that are recognized to cause opportunistic diseases under certain predisposing clinical conditions. Some species have been described in urinary tract infections. In this report we document a new episode of urinary tract infection caused by Corynebacterium phoceense and describe the whole-genome sequencing, phenotypic characteristics and mass spectra obtained by matrix-assisted desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS). Based on genome identification and DNA-to-DNA hybridization, we can assume that our strain is the second isolate of C. phoceense to be described in a urine sample. No other infectious diseases have been reported to be associated with this species.
