Project description:A novel nitrogen-containing graphitic mesoporous carbon was prepared through MnO-templated method using polyacrylonitrile (PAN) as both carbon and nitrogen sources, and MnCO3 as both template and catalyst precursors. The effects of preparation conditions on the physicochemical properties of obtained samples were systematically investigated. The results showed that as the decrease of the weight ratios of PAN and MnO (2:1-1:4), the increase of carbonization temperature (700-900 °C) and pre-oxidation temperature (180-200 °C), the samples had higher specific surface area, mesopores volume and ratios, up to 507 m2/g, 0.824 cm3/g and 96.83%, respectively. Moreover, the prepared samples presented relatively high graphitic degree and nitrogen contents (~2.21%). The adsorption capacity for acid red 88 (AR88) was as high as 309 mg/g, which were dramatically affected by the mesoporous properties and C- and N-containing groups on the surface of prepared carbon. The rich graphic carbon and pyridine-N in mesoporous carbon generated π-π dispersion and electrostatic interaction with AR88, respectively, which jointly were responsible for the adsorption process. The results of the isotherm and kinetic studies indicated that the AR88 adsorption on mesoporous carbon could be well depicted using Langmuir model and pseudo-2nd-order model.

Project description:Tuberculosis (TB) is major health concern and reason of deaths from decades to current date. Even though with a lot of advancements, diagnostic techniques, and discovery of standard antibiotics TB remains crucial challenge and can create worst scenario for human health in near future. Nanoparticles play emerging role in diagnosis and treatment of TB. In this study, we developed mesoporous silica nanoparticles containing gold (MSNs@GNPs) for rapid diagnosis and treatment of TB. The physicochemical characterization revealed effective surface morphology and particles diameter, that is applicable for in vitro applications. The in vitro antimicrobial analysis revealed that the designed MSNs@GNPs has retained significantly lower minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) values and can effectively demolish mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb). Furthermore, the diagnosis efficiency of the MSNs@GNPs was evaluated by calorimetric analysis. Which demonstrates that MSNs@GNPs can be used for rapid diagnosis of the tuberculosis when applied on in vitro culture of the Mtb. The current study needs further verification on human’s clinical samples from tuberculosis patients. However, MSNs@GNPs can be a versatile clinical approach for the rapid diagnosis and clinical treatment of the tuberculosis. Project description:Transition metal oxides are widely used in solar cells, batteries, transistors, memories, transparent conductive electrodes, photocatalysts, gas sensors, supercapacitors, and smart windows. In many of these applications, large surface areas and pore volumes can enhance molecular adsorption, facilitate ion transfer, and increase interfacial areas; the formation of complex oxides (mixed, doped, multimetallic oxides and oxide-based hybrids) can alter electronic band structures, modify/enhance charge carrier concentrations/separation, and introduce desired functionalities. A general synthetic approach to diverse mesoporous metal oxides is therefore very attractive. Here we describe a powerful aerosol-spray method for synthesizing various mesoporous metal oxides from low-cost nitrate salts. During spray, thermal heating of precursor droplets drives solvent evaporation and induces surfactant-directed formation of mesostructures, nitrate decomposition and oxide cross-linking. Thirteen types of monometallic oxides and four groups of complex ones are successfully produced, with mesoporous iron oxide microspheres demonstrated for photocatalytic oxygen evolution and gas sensing with superior performances.

Project description:Chirality is widespread in natural systems, and artificial reproduction of chiral recognition is a major scientific challenge, especially owing to various potential applications ranging from catalysis to sensing and separation science. In this context, molecular imprinting is a well-known approach for generating materials with enantioselective properties, and it has been successfully employed using polymers. However, it is particularly difficult to synthesize chiral metal matrices by this method. Here we report the fabrication of a chirally imprinted mesoporous metal, obtained by the electrochemical reduction of platinum salts in the presence of a liquid crystal phase and chiral template molecules. The porous platinum retains a chiral character after removal of the template molecules. A matrix obtained in this way exhibits a large active surface area due to its mesoporosity, and also shows a significant discrimination between two enantiomers, when they are probed using such materials as electrodes.

Project description:In this study, a novel and stable gene transformation system was developed under control of Maize Proteinase Inhibitor (MPI) as an inducible promoter using the Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles (MSNs). The functionalized MSNs with a proper particle size were synthesized and attached to a recombinant construct (pDNA) containing cryIAb gene under the control of MPI promoter (pPZP122:MPI:cryIAb:MSN [pDNA: MSN]) following transformation of tomato plants through injection of the pDNA: MSN complex into tomato red fruit at early ripening stage and then, putative transgenic seeds were collected. As an initial selection, gentamicin-resistant seedlings of T1 (24.24%) and T2 (61.37%) plants were identified. The transgene integration and expression were confirmed through the PCR, RT-PCR, and western blot approaches in the selected seedlings. PCR analysis showed that transformation frequency was equal to 10.71% in T1 plants. Semi-quantitative RT-PCR analysis confirmed the transcript expression of cryIAb in all the T1 and T2 PCR-positive plants. Western blot analysis confirmed the existence of CryIAb protein in the leaves of T2 putative transgenic plants. Accordingly, the results demonstrated that the transgene has more likely integrated into the tomato genome through homologous recombination. Bioassay was carried out for further assessment of the plant responses to Tuta absoluta resulting in an enhanced tolerance of the plant. In conclusion, the MSN-mediated stable transformation system under the MPI as an inducible promoter can be used as a suitable alternative for conventional genetic transformation methods due to its biodegradability, biocompatibility, cost and time-effectiveness, and positive effect on the plant defense against pathogens and pests.

Project description:While the metallocene polymers were comprehensively studied, other metallopolymers are rarely explored. The major challenge is the lack of a synthetic platform for the preparation of metal coordinated derivatives, monomers, and polymers. Therefore, the development of a facile synthesis of new metal coordinated monomers and polymers is critically needed. A novel successfully synthesized methacrylate-containing nickel complex is reported in this communication. Controlled RAFT polymerizations are further carried out to prepare a series of side-chain nickel containing polymers with different molecular weight and narrow Polydispersity Index (PDI). This new metallopolymer performs specific electrochemical and excellent thermal properties. This study provides a novel and convenient strategy to prepare metallopolymer with controllable molecular weight, which has potential applications in assembled, catalytic and magnetic materials.

Project description:A new structural fluorine-containing methacrylate monomer CH?=C(CH?)COOC?(CF?)?CF?CF?CF? (5) was synthesized derived from perfluoro-2-methyl-2-pentene (D?). A homopolymer of 5 and copolymers of 5 and methacrylate with different alkyl chain length (chain length n = 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 12, 18) were obtained. These new fluorinated acrylate polymers showed excellent water and oil repellency. The contact angle of the films of the homopolymer and part of the copolymers were similar with the corresponding polymers prepared from CH?=CHC(O)OCH(C?F?)(CF(CF?)?), but greater than that of the C?F13(CF?)CHOC(O)CH=CH? homopolymer. The structure-property relationship research indicated that the copolymers' hydrophobicity decreased first and then increased with the increase of alkyl chain length. Td of all the polymers were greater than 220 °C and Tg fluctuated within the range of -51~103.8 °C. Contact angle and Tg could be adjusted by controlling the feed ratio of monomer to meet the requirements of technical indicators in the practical applications. The outstanding liquid repellency and thermal stability make monomer 5 a promising alternative to perfluorinated long-chain fluorosurfactants.

Project description:The preparation of mesoporous iron oxides with controllable physiochemical properties for effective therapeutic drug delivery remains a formidable challenge. Herein, iron oxide mesoporous magnetic microparticles (IO-MMMs) were prepared by a modified reverse hard-templating approach using, for the first time, acid-prepared mesoporous spheres (APMS) as the hard silica template. The obtained mesostructures exhibited remarkably high surface area and large pore volumes (SBET = 240 m2/g and Vpore = 0.55 cm3/g), controllable average sizes, generally uniform morphologies, and excellent biocompatibilities, allowing them to achieve optimal drug release in cancer cells and tumor tissues. IO-MMM carriers were able to co-load high amounts of hydrophilic chemotherapeutic drugs (Dox or Daun) and/or hydrophobic hormonal anticancer drugs (Tam), and release them sustainably in a pH-dependent manner, utilizing the fluorescence of Daun to real-time trace the intracellular drug distribution, and employing Daun/Tam to treat cancer by combined chemo/hormonal therapy. Cytotoxicity assays against different types of cancerous cells showed that the combinatory Daun/Tam@IO-MMM formulation significantly reduced the viability of metastatic MCF7 and KAIMRC1 breast as well as HCT8 colorectal cancer cells, with the least potency towards non-cancerous normal primary cells (up to 10-fold). Electron, flow, and live confocal microscopy imaging confirmed that the loaded vehicles were successfully and differentially uptaken by the different tested cells, gradually releasing their payloads, and causing apoptotic cell death. Importantly, compared to free drugs, Daun/Tam@IO-MMMs displayed enhanced drug accumulation in patient breast primary tumor tissues, deeply penetrating into the tumor region and killing the tumor cells inside. The designed carriers described here, thus, constitute a novel promising magnetic mesoporous smart system that entraps different kinds of drugs and release them in a controlled manner for combinatorial chemo/hormonal cancer theranostics. This multifactorial platform may open new avenues in cancer therapy as efficient synergistic antitumor system through overcoming limitations of conventional cancer therapy.

Project description:A sustained-release non-effervescent floating matrix tablet was prepared using a simple and efficient direct compression of spray-dried granules containing metformin hydrochloride and cetyl alcohol with hydroxypropyl methylcellulose K15M (HPMC K15M). The design of experiments was employed to explore the optimal composition of the tablet. The similarity factor was employed to evaluate the equivalence in dissolution profiles between the test tablets and Glucophage XR as a reference. Bootstrap analysis was used to eliminate the formulations for which the dissolution profile was potentially inequivalent to that of the reference. The optimized tablet consisting of 150 mg of cetyl alcohol and 17% HPMC K15M showed a dissolution profile comparable with that of the reference with a similarity factor of 52.41, exhibited a floating lag time of less than 3 s in buffer media, remained floating for 24 h, and reduced the tablet weight by about 20% compared to that of the reference. The current study sheds light on the potential use of non-effervescent gastro-retentive extended-release tablets for high-dose drugs using a simple and efficient direct compression method, and as a potential alternative treatment for Glucophage XR. This study also highlights the importance of a systematic approach to formulation optimization and the evaluation of the dissolution profile.

Project description:Stable magnetic nanofluids containing Fe3O4@Polypyrrole (PPy) nanoparticles (NPs) were prepared by using a facile and novel method, in which one-pot route was used. FeCl3·6H2O was applied as the iron source, and the oxidizing agent to produce PPy. Trisodium citrate (Na3cit) was used as the reducing reagent to form Fe3O4 NPs. The as-prepared nanofluid can keep long-term stability. The Fe3O4@PPy NPs can still keep dispersing well after the nanofluid has been standing for 1 month and no sedimentation is found. The polymerization reaction of the pyrrole monomers took place with Fe3+ ions as the initiator, in which these Fe3+ ions remained in the solution adsorbed on the surface of the Fe3O4 NPs. Thus, the core-shell NPs of Fe3O4@PPy were obtained. The particle size of the as-prepared Fe3O4@PPy can be easily controlled from 7 to 30 nm by the polymerization reaction of the pyrrole monomers. The steric stabilization and weight of the NPs affect the stability of the nanofluids. The as-prepared Fe3O4@PPy NPs exhibit superparamagnetic behavior.
