Project description:Eu-doped ternary sulfides of general formula ALnS₂ (A = Na, K, Rb; Ln = La, Gd, Lu, Y) are presented as a novel interesting material family which may find usage as X-ray phosphors or solid state white light emitting diode (LED) lighting. Samples were synthesized in the form of transparent crystalline hexagonal platelets by chemical reaction under the flow of hydrogen sulfide. Their physical properties were investigated by means of X-ray diffraction, time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy, electron paramagnetic resonance, and X-ray excited fluorescence. Corresponding characteristics, including absorption, radioluminescence, photoluminescence excitation and emission spectra, and decay kinetics curves, were measured and evaluated in a broad temperature range (8-800 K). Calculations including quantum local crystal field potential and spin-Hamiltonian for a paramagnetic particle in D3d local symmetry and phenomenological model dealing with excited state dynamics were performed to explain the experimentally observed features. Based on the results, an energy diagram of lanthanide energy levels in KLuS₂ is proposed. Color model xy-coordinates are used to compare effects of dopants on the resulting spectrum. The application potential of the mentioned compounds in the field of white LED solid state lighting or X-ray phosphors is thoroughly discussed.

Project description:Eu3+ (1 mol %)-doped Ca2LnSbO6 (replacing Ln3+; Ln = Lu, Y, Gd, and La) and Ca2EuSbO6 were synthesized and structurally characterized by means of X-ray powder diffraction. The Eu3+ luminescence spectroscopy of the doped samples and of Ca2EuSbO6 has been carefully investigated upon collection of the excitation/emission spectra and luminescence decay curves of the main excited states. Surprisingly, apart from the dominant red emission from 5D0, all the doped samples show an uncommon blue and green emission contribution from 5DJ (J = 1, 2, and 3). This is made possible thanks to both multiphonon and cross-relaxation mechanism inefficiencies. However, the emission from 5D3 is more efficient and the decay kinetics of the 5DJ (J = 0, 1, and 2) levels is slower in the case of Y- and Lu-based doped samples. This evidence can find a possible explanation in the crystal chemistry of this family of double perovskites: our structural investigation suggests an uneven distribution of the Eu3+ dopant ions in Ca2YSbO6 and Ca2LuSbO6 hosts of the general A2BB'O6 formula. The luminescent center is mainly located in the A crystal site, and on average, the Eu-Eu distances are longer than in the case of the Gd- and La-based matrix. These longer distances can further reduce the efficiency of the cross-relaxation mechanism and, consequently, the radiative transitions are more efficient. The slower depopulation of Eu3+ 5D2 and 5D1 levels in Ca2YSbO6 and Ca2LuSbO6 hosts is reflected in the longer rise observed in the 5D1 and 5D0 decay curves, respectively. Finally, in Ca2EuSbO6, the high Eu3+ concentration gives rise to an efficient cross-relaxation within the subset of the lanthanide ions so that no emission from 5DJ (J = 1, 2, and 3) is possible and the 5D0 decay kinetics is faster than for the doped samples.

Project description:The comprehensive study of the lanthanide-doped solid solutions CuCr0.99Ln0.01S2 (Ln = La…Lu) magnetic properties was carried out using static magnetochemistry and differential scanning calorimetry techniques. It was shown that magnetic properties of CuCr0.99Ln0.01S2 are significantly affected by the magnetic properties of the lanthanide ion. The magnetic susceptibility and the effective magnetic moment were found to deviate from the Curie-Weiss law in the temperature 90 K below and 50 K above the order-disorder transition at 695 K. The observed behavior of the temperature dependence of the effective magnetic moment in the order-disorder transition temperature region was described as a result of copper atoms redistribution over different types of the crystallographic sites.

Project description:In the past three years, Dirac half-metals (DHMs) have attracted considerable attention and become a high-profile topic in spintronics becuase of their excellent physical properties such as 100% spin polarization and massless Dirac fermions. Two-dimensional DHMs proposed recently have not yet been experimentally synthesized and thus remain theoretical. As a result, their characteristics cannot be experimentally confirmed. In addition, many theoretically predicted Dirac materials have only a single cone, resulting in a nonlinear electromagnetic response with insufficient intensity and inadequate transport carrier efficiency near the Fermi level. Therefore, after several attempts, we have focused on a novel class of DHMs with multiple Dirac crossings to address the above limitations. In particular, we direct our attention to three-dimensional bulk materials. In this study, the discovery via first principles of an experimentally synthesized DHM LaNiO3 with many Dirac cones and complete spin polarization near the Fermi level is reported. It is also shown that the crystal structures of these materials are strongly correlated with their physical properties. The results indicate that many rhombohedral materials with the general formula LnNiO3 (Ln = La, Ce, Nd, Pm, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Lu) in the space group R 3 c are potential DHMs with multiple Dirac cones.

Project description:The first fluorination of the cuspidine-related phases of Ln4(Al2O7?)O2 (where Ln = Sm, Eu, Gd) is reported. A low-temperature reaction with poly(vinyl-idene difluoride) lead to the fluorine being substituted in place of oxygen and inserted into the vacant position between the dialuminate groups. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy shows the presence of the F 1s photoelectron together with an increase in Al 2p and rare-earth 4d binding energies supporting F incorporation. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analyses are consistent with the formula Ln4(Al2O6F2)O2, confirming that substitution of one oxygen by two fluoride atoms has been achieved. Rietveld refinements show an expansion in the cell upon fluorination and confirm that the incorporation of fluoride in the Ln4(Al2O7?)O2 structure results in changes in Al coordination from four to five. Thus, the isolated tetrahedral dialuminate Al2O7 groups are converted to chains of distorted square-based pyramids. These structural results are also discussed based on Raman spectra.

Project description:We have investigated the incorporation of the luminescent Eu3+ cation in different LnPO4 (Ln = Tb, Gd1-xLu x , x = 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, 1) host phases. All samples were analyzed with powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), Raman spectroscopy, and site-selective time-resolved laser-induced luminescence spectroscopy (TRLFS) directly after synthesis and after an aging time of one year at ambient conditions. The PXRD investigations demonstrate the formation of a TbPO4 phase in an uncommon anhydrite-like crystal structure evoked by a pressure-induced preparation step (grinding). In the Gd1-xLu x PO4 solid solution series, several different crystal structures are observed depending on the composition. The TRLFS emission spectra of LuPO4, Gd0.3Lu0.7PO4, and Gd0.5Lu0.5PO4 indicate Eu3+-incorporation within a xenotime-type crystal structure. TRLFS and PXRD investigations of the Gd0.7Lu0.3PO4 composition show the presence of anhydrite, xenotime, and monazite phases, implying that xenotime no longer is the favored crystal structure due to the predominance of the substantially larger Gd3+-cation in this solid phase. Eu3+-incorporation occurs predominantly in the anhydrite-like structure with smaller contributions of Eu3+ incorporated in monazite and xenotime. The electronic levels of the Eu3+-dopant in Gd0.3Lu0.7PO4 and Gd0.5Lu0.5PO4 xenotime hosts are strongly coupled to external lattice vibrations, giving rise to high-energy peaks in the obtained excitation spectra. The coupling becomes stronger after aging to such an extent that direct excitation of Eu3+ in the xenotime structure is strongly suppressed. This phenomenon, however, is only visible for materials where Eu3+ was predominantly incorporated within the xenotime structure. Single crystals of Eu3+-doped LuPO4 show no changes upon aging despite the presence of vibronically coupled excitation peaks in the excitation spectra measured directly after synthesis. Based on this observation, we propose a lattice relaxation process occurring in the powder samples during aging, resulting in Eu3+ migration within the crystal structure and Eu3+ accumulation at grain boundaries or xenotime surface sites.

Project description:The molecular structures of potassium tetrakis(hexafluoroacetylacetonato)lanthanide(III) complexes [KLn(hfa)4 ] (Ln=La, Gd, Lu; hfa=C5 HF6 O2 ,) were studied by synchronous gas-phase electron diffraction/mass spectrometry (GED/MS) supported by quantum-chemical (DFT/PBE0) calculations. The compounds sublime congruently and the vapors contain a single molecular species: the heterobinuclear complex [KLn(hfa)4 ]. All molecules are of C1 symmetry with the lanthanide atom in the center of an LnO8 coordination polyhedron, while the potassium atom is coordinated by three ligands with formation of three K-O and three K-F bonds. One hfa ligand is not bonded to the potassium atom. Topological analysis of the electron-density distributions confirmed the existence of ionic-type K-O and K-F bonding. The structures of the free [KLn(hfa)4 ] molecules are compared with those of the related compounds [KDy(hfa)4 ] and [KEr(hfa)4 ] in their crystalline state. The complex nature of the chemical bonding is discussed on the basis of electron-density topology analyses.

Project description:Evaluating the efficiency of predictive methods is critical to the processes of upscaling laboratory processes to full-scale operations on an industrial scale. With regard to separation of lanthanoids, there is a considerable motivation to optimize these processes because of immediate use in nuclear fuel cycle operations, nuclear forensics applications, and rare-earth metal recovery. Efficient predictive capabilities in Gibbs free energies of reaction are essential to optimize separations and ligand design for selective binding needed for various radiochemical applications such as nuclear fuel disposition and recycling of lanthanoid fission products into useful radioisotope products. Ligand design is essential for selective binding of lanthanoids, as separating contiguous lanthanoids is challenging because of the similar behavior these elements exhibit. Modeling including electronic structure calculations of lanthanoid-containing compounds is particularly challenging because of the associated computational cost encountered with the number of electrons correlated in these systems and relativistic considerations. This study evaluates the predictive capabilities of various ab initio methods in the calculation of Gibbs free energies of reaction for [Ln(NO3)]2+ compounds (with Ln = La to Lu), as nitrates are critical in traditional separation processes utilizing nitric acid. The composite methodologies evaluated predict Gibbs free energies of reaction for [Ln(NO3)]2+ compounds within 5 kcal mol-1 in most cases from the target method [CCSD(T)-FSII/cc-pwCV∞Z-DK3+SO] at a fraction of the computational cost.

Project description:Available data on the dependence of the equilibrium chemical potential of oxygen on degrees of doping, z, and non-stoichiometry, x, y, in U1-z Ln z O2+0.5(x-y) fluorite solid solutions and data on the dependence of the lattice parameter, a, on the same variables are combined within a unified structural-thermodynamic model. The thermodynamic model fits experimental isotherms of the oxygen potential under the assumptions of a non-ideal mixing of the endmembers, UO2, UO2.5, UO1.5, LnO1.5, and Ln 0.5U0.5O2, and of a significant reduction in the configurational entropy arising from short-range ordering (SRO) within cation-anion distributions. The structural model further investigates the SRO in terms of constraints on admissible values of cation coordination numbers and, building on these constraints, fits the lattice parameter as a function of z, y, and x. Linking together the thermodynamic and structural models allows predicting the lattice parameter as a function of z, T and the oxygen partial pressure. The model elucidates contrasting structural and thermodynamic changes due to the doping with LaO1.5, on the one hand, and with NdO1.5 and GdO1.5, on the other hand. An increased oxidation resistance in the case of Gd and Nd is attributed to strain effects caused by the lattice contraction due to the doping and to an increased thermodynamic cost of a further contraction required by the oxidation.

Project description:Mixtures of Ce-doped rare-earth aluminum perovskites are drawing a significant amount of attention as potential scintillating devices. However, the synthesis of complex perovskite systems leads to many challenges. Designing the A-site cations with an equiatomic ratio allows for the stabilization of a single-crystal phase driven by an entropic regime. This work describes the synthesis of a highly epitaxial thin film of configurationally disordered rare-earth aluminum perovskite oxide (La0.2 Lu0.2 Y0.2 Gd0.2 Ce0.2 )AlO3 and characterizes the structural and optical properties. The thin films exhibit three equivalent epitaxial domains having an orthorhombic structure resulting from monoclinic distortion of the perovskite cubic cell. An excitation of 286.5 nm from Gd3+ and energy transfer to Ce3+ with 405 nm emission are observed, which represents the potential for high-energy conversion. These experimental results also offer the pathway to tunable optical properties of high-entropy rare-earth epitaxial perovskite films for a range of applications.
